Cherif & Ahmed claim their maiden Gstaad Elite gold
Gstaad (Switzerland)
Qatari Olympic medalists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan secured their second title in three Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour events this season on Sunday, triumphing at the prestigious Elite tournament held in Gstaad.
The Asians topped the podium at the Swiss Alps for the first time in their careers and had by their sides second-placed Swedish Jacob Holting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson and third-placed Dutch Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot.
Cherif and Ahmed prevailed in two close sets (21-19, 22-20) over Nilsson and Andersson, stopping a big late push from the Swedish, who came back from a 20-15 deficit to avoid five matches points and level the score at 20 in the second set before Ahmed scored twice in a row to confirm the Qatari victory.
'They had been playing very well since the tournament started,' Cherif said. 'So we were ready for everything. Their comeback in the second set was crazy, but we knew they were able to do it. There are no easy matches at this level and you need to expect anything.'
Cherif and Ahmed had somewhat of a late start to the 2025 season after taking bronze at last year's Beach Pro Tour Finals, as the two didn't appear in a Beach Pro Tour event until May, when they took gold at the Xiamen Challenge. After that, they played in the Ostrava Elite, in June, finishing fifth.
It took the Qatari Olympians seven attempts to claim the golden cowbells in Gstaad as they first played together in the Swiss village back in 2018.
'We need to thank the fans here in Gstaad,' Cherif added. 'Since 2021, every time we play here, it doesn't matter who's on the other side of the net, they always support us.'
In the bronze medal match, Boermans and de Groot overcame Brazilian Olympians André Loyola and George Wanderley in the tie-breaker (21-23, 21-17, 15-10), finishing third. The Dutch played together in Gstaad for just the second time and had taken gold in the first one, back in 2021.
The bronze cowbells also serve as a birthday present for de Groot, who celebrated his 25th birthday on the sand in the Swiss Alps.
'Of course, I would prefer to play in the final, but to be able to compete on Sunday, on my birthday, it's really special,' de Groot said. 'The venue is incredible here, and to win bronze against a really strong Brazilian team is amazing.'
The next Elite event on the Beach Pro Tour schedule is the one in Montréal, Canada, from August 13-17.

Wiegman hints Williamson is fit for semi and says Carter ‘ready' to play
PA Media/dpa Geneva Coach Sarina Wiegman has suggested captain Leah Williamson will be fit for England's Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy and said Jess Carter is 'ready to perform' after the defender revealed she had been the target of racist abuse. There were concerns about Williamson's fitness after she rolled her ankle in extra-time of Thursday's dramatic last-eight shoot-out victory over Sweden, but the Arsenal defender - alongside every other member of the squad - trained with the team on Monday. Fellow centre back Carter, in a statement shared to her accounts on several platforms on Sunday, said she would be 'taking a step back' from social media, while Football Association chief Mark Bullingham confirmed his organization has involved UK police. Asked if she expected to have a full complement available for the semi in Geneva on Tuesday, England boss Wiegman said: 'That's what it looks like, yeah.' And pressed further on what Williamson's battle to be fit said about her skipper, the Dutch boss replied: 'It says she really wants to play, and she did everything to recover as good as possible, and she has, so she could be training today. 'When she recovers well, she's available.' England midfielder Georgia Stanway added: 'She's our captain. We would like her on the pitch as much as possible. She leads in communication and in performance, so to have her on the pitch is obviously what England need.' Williamson and Carter have both started every game of England's European title defence in Switzerland. On the abuse received by Carter, Wiegman said it was 'really sad that we have to be occupied by this. It's ridiculous. It's disgusting what's happening, and that goes beyond football, so we had to pay attention to that and support Jess.' Wiegman said she has had 'conversations' with Carter about her involvement in Tuesday's contest, adding: 'Although it's a hard situation, Jess is a very strong person, and she wants to move on, too, but she also felt, and so did we, that we had to address this. 'You can't just let it go. So she did, we did, and then we know that there's a match going on and we want to perform. We're ready to perform. She's ready to perform and compete, and that says a lot about her and about the team.' The Lionesses have collectively decided to stop 'taking the knee' ahead of kick-off, a symbolic anti-racism gesture that has become increasingly widespread, explaining in a statement on Monday: 'It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism.' Stanway said: 'I think it's just to change it up. We felt like the knee was just a little repetitive. We felt like it comes to a point where the knee isn't doing what we want it to do. So now our decision is to stand, and hopefully that will bring up more conversation and get (people) talking about the topic.' England, fifth in the world, are eight places higher in FIFA's global rankings than Tuesday's opponents, and are unbeaten in all five of their recent meetings with Italy - all friendlies - with four wins, including last year's 5-1 victory. But though statistics may be on the defending champions' side, Wiegman said: 'I think it would be really disrespectful to Italy to think that we're the favourites. 'Complacency is just the biggest mistake you could make. We've seen how they've played. I don't think there's anything that we could think that we might be the favourite, but we have to be at our very, very best to win the game.'

Marquez fends off Bezzecchi for Czech MotoGP victory
Agencies Brno (Czech Republic) The 'unstoppable' Marc Marquez emerged victorious yet again on Sunday at the Czech MotoGP to become the first Ducati rider to win five Grands Prix on the spin, but he was made to work for it in the first half of the battle. It was the Spaniard's eighth victory in 12 races this season and fifth in a row, extending his commanding lead in the world championship. The factory Ducati rider beat Marco Bezzecchi on an Aprilia by almost two seconds, while Pedro Acosta on a KTM came in third in his first race podium finish of the season. Marquez had a fifth straight perfect weekend, winning both the sprint on Saturday and Sunday's race. The 32-year-old Spaniard now leads the world championship with 381 points, 120 ahead of his younger brother Alex who crashed, and 168 ahead of Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia. 'It has been a super first part of the season and especially these last races,' Marquez said. 'I feel better and better and I'm riding super good,' he added. Bagnaia started from pole in bright sunshine but only retained the lead until the second lap when Bezzecchi eased past him, with Marquez following suit soon afterwards. Acosta did the same to settle down in third after getting a boost from a second-place finish in Saturday's sprint. Marquez glided past Bezzecchi in lap eight as the runaway trio kept building up their lead, and as so often this season kept widening the gap comfortably. The three stayed put until the finish line, although fourth-placed Bagnaia gave Acosta a hard time pressing from behind. 'The first lap was unbelievable,' said Bezzecchi. 'I had so much fun in the first half of the race but unfortunately when Marc passed me I immediately saw that he had something more.' 'I tried to attack but he was strong. Anyway, I made a fantastic performance, I'm very, very happy,' added the Italian. Marquez took 40min 04.628sec to complete the 21 laps on the resurfaced 5.4-kilometre Brno circuit returning to the MotoGP calendar after a five-year break due to financial woes. Bezzecchi crossed the line 1.753 seconds adrift, while Acosta trailed Marquez by 3.366sec. Almost 220,000 fans gathered in the stands for the weekend as Marquez sped to his fourth MotoGP win at Brno after 2013, 2017 and 2019. The MotoGP circus will now take a summer break and resume with the Austrian GP on August 15-17.

Frankfurt's Ekitike heading to Liverpool for $110 mn: Reports
dpa Frankfurt Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike is set to join Liverpool in another big-money transfer, according to media reports. The 23-year-old Frenchman will move to the English champions with immediate effect, TV broadcaster Sky Germany and transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Sunday. The transfer fee is said to be around 95 million euros [$110.4 million), with Ekitike is signing a six-year contract with the Reds. The two clubs have yet to confirm the transfer. Ekitiké would become Liverpool's next major signing from the Bundesliga this close season, following the acquisitions of Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz and Dutch wing back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen. The death of Diogo Jota, uncertainty over Darwin Nunez's future and Bayern Munich's pursuit of Luis Diaz appear to have prompted Liverpool to continue their massive spending spree. Ekitiké would be the latest big-money sale by savvy Frankfurt. Earlier this year, the club sold striker Omar Marmoush to Manchester City for 75 million euros. Nearly two years ago, forward Kolo Muani was transferred to Paris Saint-Germain for 95 million euros. Ekitike joined Eintracht Frankfurt from PSG at the start of 2024, initially on loan, before being permanently signed last year for a reported ?16.5 million. In the past season, he contributed 22 goals and 12 assists across all competitions. Liverpool's league rivals Newcastle United had also shown interest in Ekitiké. The reported deal once again highlights the negotiating skills of Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche, whose side finished third in the German top flight last term but must now deal with more squad upheaval. As a potential replacement for Ekitike, Germany international Jonathan Burkardt has already been signed from local rivals Mainz - for just 23 million euros.
