Cardiff aim to extend unbeaten run and fend off in-form relegation rivals

BBC News07-04-2025
As the Championship season nears its conclusion, the battle for survival is intensifying as teams fighting to avoid relegation begin to find some much-needed form.Second-from-bottom Luton Town are on a four-match unbeaten run, 21st-place Derby County had won four games successively before losing at Swansea City on Saturday, while Hull City in 19th have suffered only one defeat in their past six fixtures. Those performances have plunged Cardiff City into the drop zone, but they are starting to build some momentum too.The Bluebirds' goalless draw at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday means they only trail Derby - who occupy the first safety spot - on goal difference, albeit a significant 10-goal difference.Cardiff are now unbeaten in three games and hope to extend that run at Preston North End on Tuesday."We've picked up five points from 10, we're unbeaten in three and we'll look to take that into Preston," manager Omer Riza told BBC Sport Wales."It's a quick turnaround. We'll see how we turn the boys around, what they look like and we'll prepare accordingly."Preston are 14th in the table, seven points clear of the relegation zone and 12 points adrift of the play-off places. But Riza dismissed the notion that Paul Heckingbottom's side have nothing to play for."No, not at all," he added. "They've got a manager in Heckingbottom who expects his teams to play a certain way no matter what."It will be a tough game there and we'll be prepared for that game."Meanwhile, Cardiff hope to have the versatile defender-turned-midfielder Calum Chambers back for the trip to Deepdale after he missed the QPR draw."Chambo had a family issue so he got taken out of the squad late [before the game]," said Riza."But everything's fine and hopefully Chambo will be back available for Tuesday."

Owen Beck to Rangers transfer talk ramps up amid £10m claim

The 22-year-old burst onto the scene in Scotland two seasons ago during a loan spell at Dundee. Last season, he made 24 appearances for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, as he continued his development away from Anfield, despite having made three senior outings for the Reds. Dave OCKOP claims that talks are advancing between Liverpool and the Scottish Premiership giants over a potential move. However, the Liverpool media outlet claims the Premier League champions will seek £10m to part company with the talented left-back. It's added that Rangers are keen to compromise on a fee closer to the £7m region. Russell Martin is believed to be on the lookout for a new left back having bombed Ridvan Yilmaz out of the club's European squad, as well as taking the No.3 shirt of the Turk. As things stand, Jeft remains the first-choice left back at the club, with Max Aarons favoured starting there ahead of Yilmaz.

Owen Beck to Rangers transfer drive ramps up as Liverpool demand £10m but Ibrox side target 'compromise'

Rangers view Beck as a live option but whether an agreement can be reached over a fee is another matter Rangers are reportedly pressing ahead with talks to sign Owen Beck from Liverpool – and while the Reds' £10m asking price is a problem, it's believed the Ibrox side are hopeful of a compromise. ‌ The left-back has been heavily linked with a move to Rangers all summer while Celtic held a firm interest in the past although that has subsided since Kieran Tierney's return to Parkhead. ‌ Russell Martin is on the hunt for a new player to nail down that position, having stripped Ridvan Yilmaz of his squad number and bombed the Turkish star out of his Champions League squad to face Panathinaikos. ‌ Jefte is available but right-back Max Aarons has been the favoured starter at left-back throughout pre-season, indicating Martin isn't convinced by either of his natural left-backs. We understand Rangers do view Beck as a live option and now Liverpool outlet Dave OCKOP claims talks are advancing. It's added that Liverpool want around £10m for the 22-year-old but that Rangers are keen to negotiate a 'compromised' fee closer to £7m. Liverpool's preferred option is said to be extending Beck's contact beyond its current expiry date of 2026. But it's claimed Rangers would prefer to purchase him outright and make him the long-term solution to their left-back problems. ‌ Beck, who previously impressed on loan at Dundee, played 24 times in the Championship for Blackburn last season and has three senior Liverpool appearances to his name.
