Augustana softball geared up Super Regionals run

Yahoo13-05-2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Augustana softball team reached the NCAA Regionals and found success winning all three games. Now, the Vikings are off to the Super Regionals.
The Vikings won the NSIC Tournament in early May, and that success continued into the NCAA Central Regional. The victories didn't come easy as the first two games saw a combined eight extra innings.
'Any sort of win that you can get down there is a huge win,' Augustana pitcher Grace Glanzer said. 'So we didn't care how it looked, what it looked like. I mean, it'd be great to have it a different way, a more quicker game than what we had. But, what matters is that we came out on top, and then we're here and we're moving on to the next part of our season.'
Augustana didn't get to host in the regionals, but pitcher Grace Glanzer says the travel helped build the teams togetherness.
'Honestly, there is some fun in traveling postseason,' Glanzer said. 'You eat as a team, you travel as a team, you do everything as a team. There's some fun in that. A lot of memories that are made. So, we took it as it is and we embraced it. And that's, I think why we came out on top this weekend.'
'Don't give in,' Augustana head coach Gretta Melsted said. 'Keep competing, keep pushing, keep throwing punches, keep going after it. Because eventually something is going to fall, or if it doesn't fall, at least you gave everything you had.'
The Vikings found unique ways to score runs in the regional, but as coach Melsted knows, any offense is key this time of the year.
'When you get to this time of year, you're going to face those pitchers that are going to shut down that offense or limit your opportunities. So you have to win in different ways, whether that is getting hit by a pitch, whether that is taking a walk, you have to be able to win in multiple different ways.'
Augustana will meet Central Oklahoma Thursday, May 15th. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. central time.

Vikings' Dallas Turner dubbed 'must-watch' during Vikings training camp

EDGE defender Dallas Turner didn't have the type of rookie season most expected when the Minnesota Vikings traded up to select him with the 17th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. He registered three snaps on 310 defensive snaps, playing a rotational role most of the season. That wasn't all Turner's fault. Starters Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel earned Pro Bowl nods after combining for 23.5 sacks. Turner will be counted on to produce in 2025, but will that come at the expense of pulling Greenard and Van Ginkel off the field? How the Vikings line Turner up is one of the top priorities for Alec Lewis to watch for this training camp, he wrote in The Athletic. Turner needs more playing time for multiple reasons. It's not just that the Vikings traded a boatload of draft capital to acquire him in 2024; it's also that Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard aren't likely to be able to sustain the workload they contributed last year. Turner's explosiveness should provide Flores a new card to pull to confound quarterbacks. Physically, Turner can do just about everything. Flores' willingness to move him around the field in training camp and beyond will be telling. Greenard and Van Ginkel terrorized quarterbacks in 2024, but the Vikings had to manufacture ways to get the rest of the defense involved. Turner could provide a needed spark off the EDGE if he substitutes in for one of them. However, being aligned over guards or centers and blitzing, a la Micah Parsons, could add a new element to the defense without sacrificing Greenard and Van Ginkel. The Vikings will give Turner every opportunity to play in 2025 by lining him up at various positions. Let's see if he's up to the task.

Minnesota Vikings share good news regarding Christian Darrisaw and Will Fries

The Minnesota Vikings are counting on their offensive line to be a position group of strength in 2025. Two of those members, Christian Darrisaw and right guard Will Fries, have been cleared to participate in training camp after suffering season-ending injuries last year. However, their returns will look different. Although neither will appear on the team's PUP list (physically unable to perform), Darrisaw, coming off a torn ACL/MCL, is likely to be limited to individual drills. Fries, who suffered a fractured tibia, will be fully cleared to practice. Even though he has been cleared, that doesn't mean the Vikings will expect Fries to be a full participant right away. On Tuesday, Kevin O'Connell said that the Vikings will "ramp up" Fries as camp progresses. That likely begins with individual drills, followed by combination drills, and then team drills. That means that as long as there are no setbacks, Fries should be ready for Week 1. Darrisaw's status remains uncertain, although his recovery appears to be on schedule.

Vikings report for camp realizing the hard work required to better a 14-win season

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings were just hours into their offseason, eliminated from the playoffs with a lopsided loss, when Jonathan Greenard was moved to challenge himself and his teammates to embrace the hard work of trying to better a 14-4 record and avoid another one-and-done. 'More is required,' the veteran edge rusher posted on social media. Three months later, Greenard's spontaneous slogan turned into a T-shirt. The motivational swag was waiting for every player at his locker upon arrival for the start of strength and conditioning sessions in the spring. 'You can only control your individual effort, and as long as you do that, you're going to pull somebody else and they're going to see that and it's going to be infectious for the whole team, the whole building,' Greenard said earlier in the offseason, explaining the purpose of spreading the word beyond a simple tweet. The mantra has resonated throughout a well-regarded organization that will again field a well-built roster in 2025 but still faces questions about its viability as a championship contender. The Vikings, of course, are one of the few NFL teams that have existed for the entire Super Bowl era but never won one. 'Because clearly that scale hasn't been tipped for us,' right tackle Brian O'Neill said, 'and we need to find a way to make that happen.' As players reported to training camp this week, coach Kevin O'Connell turned up the volume on the messaging. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and O'Connell each signed contract extensions during the offseason, keeping their job statuses in sync as they embark on their fourth year together while also raising the bar for expectations. The Vikings have not won a playoff game since they arrived, a drought going back to the 2019 season. 'We feel proud of some of the things we've accomplished, but at the same time I think it's time for all of us to continue to look inward first,' O'Connell said Tuesday at a joint news conference with Adofo-Mensah to formally kick off the season. 'It's time for us to acknowledge what we're actually trying to build here, and what that's going to take is — in my opinion — an invisible presence of understanding that we're capable but we've got to put in a lot of work to feel totally worthy in those moments to get to where we want to get to.' Darrisaw highlights list of healthy players The Vikings started only two players on the physically unable to perform list: tight end Gavin Bartholomew (back), their sixth-round draft pick, and linebacker Chaz Chambliss (foot), an undrafted rookie. That means left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who's recovering from reconstructive knee surgery after tearing his ACL last year, and new right guard Will Fries, whose 2024 season with the Indianapolis Colts ended early because of a broken leg, are right on track. O'Connell said both players would likely be limited to individual drills at the beginning of training camp to complete the ramping-up process, but the likelihood of having both key blockers ready for Week 1 is a vital boost for quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Addison could face suspension after resolution of court case Wide receiver Jordan Addison last week pleaded guilty to a lesser charge that resolved his 2024 drunken driving citation, clearing the way for potential discipline from the league. Adofo-Mensah said the Vikings have not been given an indication about the timing of such a decision. 'Obviously, when that originally happened, we knew that it was a possibility, but really you're talking about team building in general: You might not have players on the field for various reasons, and you've always got to be ready with depth," Adofo-Mensah said. ___
