At condolence meet, Achuthanandan's legacy as a key figure in Kerala's transformation remembered
'VS's life is deeply intertwined with the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprising which took an uncompromising stand to make united Kerala a reality. At a time when it was difficult to organise farm workers, he took a lead role in it. He endured brutal torture in jail, but this only strengthened his resolve to fight for the Communist movement. Some of the most eventful years in his public life were as the Leader of the Opposition, when he made many substantial interventions and reached the farthest corners of Kerala to expose wrongdoing. As the Chief Minister, he played a key role in developmental and welfare efforts,' said Mr.Vijayan.
He said that Achuthanandan's passing away is an irreparable loss not just for the Communist movement, but also for movements for democracy across the country.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that Achuthanandan had an open mind to accept and imbibe progressive ideas even at old age. He focussed on environmental issues even before they were in vogue.
'During his tenure as the Chief Minister, I had on many occasions levelled criticism against the government in the Assembly. But, when it came to issues that he was really concerned about, he used to agree with the Opposition, even if it was raised by us. The debates on the lottery mafia was which led to qualitative outcomes and led to the ban on lottery from other States. Though many of us have criticised his language in the past, we realised that it was a language that evolved from working amid the common people,' he said.
Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Binoy Viswam said that Achuthanandan imbibed the ideals of Marxism and implemented it in practice based on his own real world understanding.
CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan presided over the function in which Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan, Archbishop of the Latin Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram Thomas J. Netto, Palayam Imam V. P. Suhaib Moulavi, Sree Narayana Dharma Sangam Trust general secretary Swami Subhangananda, Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Church's Thiruvananthapuram diocese Gabriel Mar Gregorios and others spoke.

Public service must be top priority for every employee: Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini
Chandigarh: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Saturday that govt employees are the backbone of the state's administrative machinery and play a pivotal role in driving development. Addressing newly recruited Group-D employees at a state-level 'sammelan' held in Panchkula, he urged them to work with the spirit of "public interest above all" and to function as a team to build a strong, inclusive, and self-reliant Haryana. Extending best wishes to all the newly recruited employees, Saini said a govt job is not just employment but an opportunity to serve the motherland that has given us everything and the society that has shaped our identity. Govt employees are the most crucial link between the people and the administration, he said. Taking a dig at the opposition, Saini recalled that during the assembly elections, a leader from the Opposition promised jobs in exchange for votes. Bids were being placed on jobs. Our govt has taken a firm stand against such practices and has ensured that recruitments are done strictly on the basis of merit, he asserted. "Today, children from economically weaker families are also securing govt jobs and realising their dreams. Earlier, during the tenure of previous govts, the youth were deprived of the desired results of their hard work. But now, jobs are being given purely on the basis of merit," he remarked. He assured employees that the govt remains committed to their training, skill development, and welfare, while promoting a better work culture, modern infrastructure, and digital processes at every level. 'It can't be about land stir either': Congress amid controversy over remarks on Arun Jaitley
New Delhi: Several Opposition leaders - including within the Congress - expressed concern and embarrassment on Saturday after Rahul Gandhi claimed that BJP leader Arun Jaitley had threatened him over his support for the anti-farm law agitation, which began a year after the former finance minister's death. While the BJP quickly seized on the contradiction, some Congress leaders, including Rajni Patil, said Gandhi may have been referring instead to the 2015 protests against amendments to the land acquisition law . However, this too left them scrambling for explanations - Gandhi had notably left the country for nearly two months during the peak of that agitation. In early 2015, as the Opposition launched a coordinated pushback against the land Bill - stalling Parliament, leading marches to Rashtrapati Bhavan, and staging protests at Jantar Mantar and Bhatta Parsaul - Rahul Gandhi was missing in action. He skipped most of the Budget Session and returned only after 57 days, during which Sonia Gandhi, the late Ahmed Patel and others led the charge. His absence had then triggered widespread speculation and political barbs, forcing the Congress to organise a hasty public rally on his return. "I have no words to explain why Rahul ji needlessly dragged Arun Jaitley ji's name," said a senior Opposition leader. "It can't be about the 2015 land law agitation - Rahul ji had chosen to be abroad for nearly two months then".

CPI(ML) flags errors in draft rolls; EC says no objections filed in first 24 hours
1 2 Patna/New Delhi: Even as the Election Commission of India (ECI) claimed on Saturday that not a single claim or objection had been filed within the first 24 hours of publishing Bihar's draft electoral rolls, the CPI(ML) claimed it had submitted an objection letter via email regarding names of living voters being listed as dead. The ECI had released the draft rolls on Friday and issued its first daily status update on Saturday. While the EC maintained that none of the 1.6 lakh booth-level agents (BLAs) deployed by a dozen political parties filed any official objections by 3pm on Aug 2, CPI(ML) state secretary Kunal alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise. He submitted proof of two such voters — Kudrat Khan and Shailesh Prasad — from Bhore assembly constituency, whose names, he claimed, had been wrongly included in the list of deceased voters. "At booth number 339, Sisai village, the names of people who are alive have been declared dead. Meanwhile, five names earlier listed as dead at booth number 317 have now been re-included, but two remain missing," Kunal said. He demanded assembly-wise and booth-wise details of the 65,64,075 voters deleted in the first phase of the SIR. Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani alleged, "My wife lives in Mumbai, but her name has been added here. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRI in Italy? We will take to the streets over this issue." However, the EC reiterated that all parties had agreed to review the boothwise rolls and yet "no BLA of any political party has submitted a single case to BLOs during the first 24 hours." The EC said it had already received 3,223 applications for fresh enrolment by first-time voters and was running awareness campaigns. Special camps will be held daily at block and urban offices till Sept 1. Eligible voters are urged to verify their names and submit photographs for new voter cards.
