Thousands flock to Long Grove's Cocoa Crawl; ‘The launch of the 2025 festival season'
As the event started, Ryan Messner, a Long Grove business owner and Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association president, said, 'Cocoa Crawl is the launch of the 2025 festival season in Long Grove.
'It's a family fun, friendly event,' he said.
Free hot chocolate stations around Long Grove drew crowds of patrons.
'You've got six flavors of cocoa that you get to walk around and try,' Messner said. 'Who doesn't like coming out for free hot cocoa to start the season?'
Messner's son Logan, 14, volunteered with his father, checking on the beverage inventory at hot cocoa station tents around town.
'Volunteering is kind of good because you can really help everyone,' Logan Messner said. 'You can help the community. You can give back to everyone what they've given to you.'
Several businesses new to Long Grove were busy with Cocoa Crawl customer traffic.
Sylvia Salimi, the owner of Blooming Boutique Flowers, shared space inside with Hana Weber, the operator of Sorelle Italian Market. Weber offered free hot chocolate and signature cookies as a thank-you to those who stopped by.
'It's been fantastic,' Weber said.
Blooming Boutique Flowers opened in May and is located next to the historic Robert Parker Coffin Road Bridge.
'We love Long Grove,' Salimi said. 'We live in Long Grove, so it just made sense with our little ones to open a business here.'
Her husband Ari said, 'As a family and a business, when we moved from the city we looked for a spot and we knew we wanted to be in the (Adlai E.) Stevenson (High School) district. We love family, and we want to give back to the community as well.
'When we saw and heard of Long Grove, we decided to plant our roots here for the next 18 years until our three children go through and graduate,' he said. '(Sylvia) picked the spot, the iconic bridge that everybody knows about is the backdrop for her shop. We thought it was going to be something great.'
Sylvia Salimi added, 'We couldn't miss out on this opportunity here right by the bridge, and the festivals are all fun. The Cocoa Crawl's a great turnout. We've had a ton of people here.'
John and Jenna Rickard moved to Long Grove from Los Angeles, with their children Will, 5, and Riley, 2. Jenna Rickard grew up in Buffalo Grove, and was a 2004 high school graduate.
'We came back to Lake County for the schools,' Jenna Rickard said. 'And we wanted a nice place for our kids to go to school in the public school system, and this was a great place.'
John Rickard added, 'This just seemed like a good spot to settle down and raise our family.'
On the same retail side along the flower shop is storefront business Ritzy Christmas, which opened later last year and operated by siblings Amanda and Ramona Aesho. The inventory of Ritzy Christmas includes Christmas ornaments, but also seasonal items of all holidays, including birthday gifts and a Valentine's Day ornamental tree with oversized jewels.
'The Cocoa Crawl is bringing in customers,' Amanda Aesho said. 'It's been busy. It's wonderful.'
Attending the Cocoa Crawl with visitors from Wisconsin was Deb Bello of Kildeer.
'Lake County is just great,' Bello said. 'We love the small-town feel of Long Grove and all of the little shops, and just enjoy coming here and all the little festivals.'

Free Raising Cane's for National Chicken Finger Day 2025: How to get deal
National Chicken Finger Day is this Sunday, July 27, and fast food chain Raising Cane's has a freebie offer for customers to celebrate the occasion. The company said in a news release on July 16 that it is offering a free chicken finger to all customers who purchase a Box Combo on July 27. This marks the first time the company is making the deal available to all customers and not just Caniac Club loyalty members, the company said. The restaurant chain created the fictional holiday in 2010 and even trademarked the phrase "National Chicken Finger Day" in 2019, according to a news release, and touts that it has given away more than 150,000 chicken fingers on the day alone. Raising Cane's says it has over 900 locations in more than 40 states, and plans to open more than 100 new restaurants "across several new markets" in 2025. New Raising Cane's locations: Raising Cane's is opening 5 restaurants next month. Did your state make the list? When is National Chicken Finger Day? National Chicken Finger Day, which is Sunday, July 27, is an unofficial holiday created by Todd Graves, the founder of Raising Cane's, in 2010 to "recognize and celebrate (the chain's) delicious chicken fingers," the company says on its website. (The event is not to be confused with National Chicken Wing Day, which is Tuesday, July 29.) The chain has tapped rap legend Snoop Dogg to help spread the word about National Chicken Finger Day this year. The rapper will feature in a Christmas-in-July-themed ad spot where he rolls up in a Cadillac sleigh and swaps "ho ho ho" for "yo yo yo" while delivering chicken fingers. Are any other restaurant chains celebrating National Chicken Finger Day? While Wing Stop is not offering any deals or discounts on the day, the chain announced on July 24 that it had filed an application to trademark the phrase "National Chicken Tender Day," which it says is on July 27, in an apparent jab at Raising Cane's. 'Some say that chicken fingers, strips and tenders are the same, but Wingstop isn't buying it,' said Wingstop's Chief Revenue Officer, Mark Christenson, in a news release. "By filing a trademark application to register 'National Chicken Tender Day,' Wingstop is giving the finger to fingers and staking our claim on our distinctive crispy tenders that fans crave.' Meanwhile, Orlando-based restaurant chain Huey Magoo's is also celebrating National Chicken Finger Day by giving away five free Tender Bites with the purchase of any three-piece or larger Tender Meal on July 27. Watch live: What's next for Wanamaker Organ at the former Philadelphia Macy's store?
It's Christmas in July, and what better place to celebrate it than the Wanamaker Building, home of Philadelphia's best-known holiday events? At 10 a.m., several local officials are gathering at the building on Market Street for "a special announcement about the future of some of Philadelphia's most beloved holiday traditions." CBS News Philadelphia will livestream this announcement. You can watch in the player above or anywhere else CBS News Philadelphia is streaming. The heads of the Philadelphia Visitor Center and Opera Philadelphia will be there, as will the Executive Director of the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ and Councilmember Mark Squilla. The organ and Grand Court, which features a one-ton bronze statue of a perched eagle, are designated National Historic Landmarks and are also on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places — they are required to be preserved. The building is well known for its Christmas Light Show narrated by Julie Andrews, and the Dickens Village walk-through display that Macy's had acquired from Strawbridge's. TF Cornerstone, a New York-based developer, previously announced plans to build 600 loft-style apartments above the retail space in the Wanamaker Building. Once the home of Wanamaker's department store, the retail area was most recently occupied by Macy's before the company announced in January 2025 that it would be closing the store. The Philadelphia Visitor Center and Friends of the Wanamaker Organ have been collecting donations in order to install, operate and staff the light show and Dickens Village for the 2025 holiday season. This charming city has quickly become a haven for luxury second-home buyers — and it's far from both coasts
For deep-pocketed home buyers in search of a second home, they're increasingly looking to the high desert. Instead of dealing with the humidity, hurricanes and skyrocketing prices of Florida, Santa Fe, New Mexico is offering a Western alternative that's quietly gaining ground. This quarter, the New Mexico capital cracked the top 10 of the Wall Street Journal/ luxury housing market index for the first time, landing in the No. 2 spot — just behind St. Louis and ahead of many legacy markets traditionally associated with second-home prestige. Advertisement 6 Looking for a second home that doesn't come with hurricanes, humidity or hoards of tourists? Santa Fe might be the answer. SeanPavonePhoto – The index, released Thursday, evaluates high-end markets based not just on property values, but also on lifestyle perks, economic vitality and long-term growth potential. 'There's not much traffic in Santa Fe and prices are still pretty affordable per square foot compared to other luxury markets such as Aspen, Palm Beach and the Hamptons,' Darlene Streit, a broker with Sotheby's International Realty, told Mansion Global. Advertisement 'We're a small town with a big town feeling. We have a lot of world-class restaurants, museums and an arts and cultural scene.' Indeed, that is true, as Santa Fe — which has been especially popular among film-industry retirees from Los Angeles — is also replete with art galleries and home to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. It's also impossible to ignore its wide selection of restaurants and bars — the latter of which will always serve up strong margaritas, and chips and queso. At a median luxury listing price of $2.7 million, Santa Fe isn't exactly a bargain, but it's proving to be a value compared to more saturated resort markets. 6 The New Mexico capital just cracked the top 10 in the Wall Street Journal/ Luxury Housing Market Ranking for the first time — thanks to its rare blend of affordability, mild climate and quality of life. Alexey Stiop – Advertisement And unlike Palm Beach or Naples, it offers a dry, temperate climate that rarely reaches sweltering heights — and isn't on a first-name basis with every tropical storm. However, those prone to altitude sensitivity may want to prep in advance, as Santa Fe is at a higher elevation than the city of Denver. 'We have a lot of Texans who tend to spend their summers here because we rarely break 90 degrees, compared to many of the metros in Texas,' Kyle Klain, co-leader at Barker Realty, told the outlet. 'Come the holiday season and the winter, they tend to come to those second homes and use them for their family gatherings for Christmas or an excuse to go skiing.' 6 Storm damage seen in Florida following Hurricane Milton. Mike Lang / Sarasota Herald-Tribune / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Advertisement The area's appeal is especially strong among second-home buyers and retirees — particularly those coming from California, Arizona and Texas — many of whom are seeking stability and comfort without sacrificing access to nature and culture. 'We've had some people come because of the fires and different natural disasters that have happened in California,' said Streit. 'It's pretty stable in Santa Fe, we haven't had, thankfully, a big natural disaster in town. Perhaps, it feels a little safer.' According to 9.2% of homes in Santa Fe are vacation properties, more than triple the national average. 6 With a median luxury listing price of $2.7 million, the city offers a lower barrier to entry compared to hotspots like Aspen or Palm Beach. But it's not just a bargain — it's a lifestyle play. Andriy Blokhin – 6 Santa Fe's downtown is equal parts charming and walkable. SeanPavonePhoto – And even as inventory has grown, prices have remained flat — something Klain says is new for a market that experienced steady appreciation over the past five years. Anthony Smith, senior economist at noted that Santa Fe's strong 'amenities' score played a major role in its jump up the rankings, thanks to its blend of cultural offerings and family-friendly appeal. 6 It's become a magnet for second-home buyers and retirees, especially from Texas, California and Arizona, many of whom are weary of natural disasters and sticker shock elsewhere. SeanPavonePhoto – Advertisement 'Santa Fe really stands apart from other cities within New Mexico and is one of the biggest hidden gems within the Southwest,' he told Mansion Global. It's also easy to access via its own airport, though that's smaller than the Albuquerque airport located less than an hour away. And while Florida was once the default choice for those looking to retire or relax in luxury, rising costs and climate volatility are sending buyers elsewhere. 'It's perhaps an easier place to retire than some other places,' Streit said. 'Florida used to be a great, easy, inexpensive place to retire, but it's become fairly costly. Santa Fe is still a pretty good price in comparison, and it's not overrun with people.'
