Rhyse Martin has no regrets leaving Leeds for Hull KR

Leader Live3 days ago
The 32-year-old second row ended a six-year stint at Leeds to join Hull KR at the end of last year only to be laid low by a thigh injury that required surgery just four games into his new career with the resurgent Robins.
Martin could hardly have timed his recovery better having returned for last week's win over Wakefield, and is now in line to feature against the Rhinos, for whom he made 132 appearances and amassed over 1000 points.
Martin told the PA news agency: 'Coming to the club to try and add something to the team, it was something I definitely didn't want to happen. I wanted to be on the field showing what I can do for this team. But I'm back now and I get another chance to earn the respect of my team-mates.
'For me it just felt like time to make a change and take up a new challenge, where I've had to start again. I think when you're in that sort of position it brings the best of you as a player. When you take up a new challenge you find out what you're made of and how tough you are.'
Martin's Rhinos career always looked likely to come to a close as they headed towards a second consecutive season without a play-off berth, and for a time he looked likely to return to Australia before Willie Peters stepped in to add the cool goal-kicker – who jointly holds the world record for 41 consecutive successful kicks – to his talent pool.
The departure of former head coach Rohan Smith in June added to the uncertainty at Headingley, and with his replacement Brad Arthur still far from certain of his long-term plans, Martin said the situation confirmed his decision to move elsewhere.
Going through the 'horrible' experience of watching Rovers' Challenge Cup win over Warrington from the sidelines has only served to confirm his desire to win more with Rovers, and a win over the Rhinos, one of the biggest contenders for a top-two slot, would be a big step in the right direction.
'My time at Rhinos was good but I was thinking about the next couple of years,' added Martin. 'I think they're in a position where they're not sure where they're going with their head coach, whereas I knew at Rovers there was stability and they were pushing for silverware, so that really made the decision a lot easier.'

Rangers have ‘agreed a deal' to sign multi-million pound Premier League player as another defender is brought in

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Wolves centre-back Nasser Djiga on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old is set to become Russell Martin's fifth signing, and is the third defender through the door at Ibrox this summer after Max Aarons and Emmanuel Fernandez. Djiga only joined the Premier League side in January in a £10million deal for Red Star Belgrade. The Burkina Faso international made just six appearances and has found his opportunities for first-team football at Wolves limited. The deal will reportedly be a straight loan with no option to buy at the end of his stay in Glasgow. The Express and Star is reporting "a deal has been agreed and is set to go through." Djiga started his career in his homeland with Vitesse FC before moving to Basel in 2021. He struggled for regular game time at the Swiss outfit and was loaned out - first to Nimes in Ligue 2 - then Red Star who would go on to make the move permanent. Djiga would help bolster the Rangers backline as centre-back Robin Propper looks as though he could be returning to Twente. Ben Davies has also been linked with a return to English Championship new boys Birmingham, while Martin hinted that Clinton Nsiala would be better served getting first-team football out on loan. That leaves Martin with John Souttar, Fernandez and Leon King. After their 2-2 friendly draw with Club Brugge, Rangers boss Russell Martin confirmed his side would look much different for their huge Champions League qualifier in two weeks' time. Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane Rangers are heading down to St George's Park this week - the home of the England international team - to help them prepare for their clash against Panathinaikos. The first leg against the Greens is at Ibrox on July 22. They then host Middlesbrough in a friendly on the July 26, before the return leg in Greece on the 30th of July. Martin also confirmed that strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane are still very much part of his plans. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Rangers transfer latest as £10m man closes in on loan plus updates on Coady and two key exits

Nasser Djiga is expected to be the next signing in the door at Ibrox Rangers are preparing to push the button on summer signing No6 as they close in on defender Nasser Djiga. The Wolves centre-back has agreed to make the move north on a season-long loan as Ibrox boss Russell Martin steps up his busy recruitment drive. ‌ The new Rangers gaffer has already welcomed Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell, Manny Fernandez and Thelo Aasgaard on board. ‌ Now his hoping to introduce Djiga to his team once they arrive at St George's Park in Burton for a week long training camp. The 22-year-old Burkino Faso international made a £10million move from Red Star Belgrade to Molineux last January. But having made just six appearances for the Premier League outfit, Wolves chiefs have decided he needs more game time if he's to make the grade in England. Wanderers coach Vítor Pereira remains a big believer in the giant 6ft 4ins stopper's potential and as such, there will be no option to buy included in his loan agreement. But the deal will still suit Martin, who is keen to stiffen up his backline ahead of the club's crucial Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos in a fortnight's time. Former Peterborough defender Fernandez has joined on a £2.5million deal but is not expected to feature regularly yet as he adjusts to life in Glasgow. And with John Souttar only just back in training after hernia surgery over the summer, Martin is looking for further defensive cover. ‌ Conor Coady remains a target but Rangers are waiting from the green light from Leicester to complete that deal. In the meantime, sporting director Kevin Thelwell is looking to move on some of the club's deadwood. Clinton Nsiala has already been told he is free to find a new club. ‌ Robin Propper is also pondering his own future after Gers reportedly agreed a £1.5million package that would see him return to former club FC Twente. The Dutchman failed to convince during a torrid debut year in Glasgow last term and looked uncomfortable again with Martin's trademark high press as Rangers drew their opening pre-season friendly against Club Brugge on Sunday. ‌ Now his old club have set a deadline to secure his return to Enschede. Jan Streuer - the club's former sporting director who now serves as a technical consultant - has confirmed Propper is one of their three main targets for the summer. He said: "There is no clarity yet with Robin, but we hope to get it very soon. We have money to buy players. Is that a lot of money? Twente is not a club that is going to pay five, six or seven million for a player. We are not there yet. ‌ "But we can do something. We are also still looking for a commanding attacking midfielder and we would like a very good left winger too. We are doing it differently now. It is better to be aggressive in the transfer market. You have certain players in mind and you want to make the right choice." Meanwhile, reports in Greece confirmed AEK Athens are set to look elsewhere after giving up in their pursuit of Cyriel Dessers. Martin confirmed Gers had already booted out a bid for the striker and was no looking forward to integrating him into his squad. Speaking on Sunday, the Gers gaffer said: 'Cyriel has just been injured, he's had a bit of a niggly ankle. 'We turned down a bid a while ago for him that was nowhere near the valuation for the football club. But he's been great. He's been desperate to train. We're had to give him some treatment this week on his ankle since he's been back. But I'm looking forward to working with him. "So, that [deal is] nowhere near happening. He'll get on the training ground this week and start enjoying it. But he's not kicked up one bit of fuss. He seems to be a really good professional. And from what everyone tells him, he really is.'
