Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Dusunic Languages Preservation Association Keningau will host the inaugural Dusunic Sabah Carnival at Apin-Apin, Keningau next month. Its President, Datuk Lawrence Gimbang, said the carnival is part of the association's effort to promote the continued use of the Dusunic language in everyday life. He said while language use among the younger generation has declined in some areas, the carnival will serve as a practical platform to bring it back into public focus. Activities lined up include speech competitions, poetry readings, traditional attire showcases and language workshops, all conducted in the Dusunic language. Gimbang announced the event after chairing the association's meeting (pic below), here, last Saturday. He emphasised that the carnival will later be brought to other districts, including Ranau, with a Dusunic language workshop also scheduled in Bongawan this August. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? English boost for 51 rural schools

Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Nancy launching REAL programme at SK Pekan, Papar as Tulip (right) and others RCKK Pearl and LDS Charities members look on. Kota Kinabalu: A total of 51 schools across 14 districts in Sabah are now part of the rural focus English for all (REAL) programme since its inception in 2016. "More than 10,000 students have benefitted from this initiative, which has received about RM1 million in funding for the purchase of teaching materials,' said Tulip Noorazyze, Chair of Project REAL under the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK) Pearl. Advertisement She said the programme includes inter-school and inter-district competitions, and teacher training workshops. 'Over the past nine years, we've seen significant improvements in students' English examination results and overall proficiency. This progress is also reflected in the annual poem writing, speech, and storytelling competitions,' she added. The club also organises annual teacher training workshops, conducted by professional English language trainers, to introduce creative and engaging methods for teaching English in rural schools. She said the club will continue its efforts to expand the programme to as many rural schools as possible. This year, the initiative was launched in 12 primary schools across Pitas, Papar, and Beaufort, in collaboration with the Sabah State Education Department. The schools in Pitas are SK Rosob, SK Bangkau-Bangkau, and SK Bawing. In Papar, the schools involved are SK Pekan Papar, SJKC Tung Shan, SK Lingan, and SK Ulu Lumagar. The participating schools in Beaufort are SK Padas Damit, SK Kota Klias, SK Biah Batu 65, SK Linungkuan, and SK Lembah Poring. The launch was officiated by Senior Assistant Director of the Language Unit at the Sabah Education Department, Nancy @ Aminah Idrus. Also present were RCKK Pearl President Chendramata Sinteh, Elder Larry and Sister Hathaway from Latter-day Saints (LDS) Charities, who sponsored the programme in the 12 schools. Project REAL aims to bridge the English proficiency gap between rural and urban students. Each school receives between 400 and 600 English storybooks, bilingual dictionaries for all students, smart TVs or LCD projectors, bookshelves, floor mats, and stools donated by the club. As part of the project's requirements, each headmaster or headmistress and the English language panel must draw up five action plans to enhance English proficiency in their schools. The initiative aligns with the Education Department's high immersive programme. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Gathering of scholars, artists to rethink urban research

Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 Text Size: Dr Tangit (front right) with organiser and participants. Kundasang: Scholars, educators, and artists from across Southeast Asia and beyond convened in the highland town of Kundasang for a five-day regional workshop organised under the Southeast Asia Neighbourhoods Network (Seannet), aimed at deepening connections between academic research, community knowledge, and place-based learning. Jointly organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Universiti Malaya (UM), with support from the Henry Luce Foundation, the workshop ran from July 9 to 13 and brought together participants from more than 20 academic and grassroots institutions. Advertisement The event is part of Seannet's broader initiative to reshape urban studies by foregrounding everyday life, memory, and resistance within neighbourhoods. The programme was led by Dr Vilashini Somiah, a feminist anthropologist and senior lecturer at UM, who has conducted extensive fieldwork in Kundasang. She was joined by UMS senior lecturer Dr Trixie Tangit, a linguist and anthropologist noted for her work on Indigenous knowledge systems and ethical community-based methodologies. Participants engaged in a range of activities, including site visits to the rural villages of Cinta Mata, Bundu Tuhan, and Kiau Nuluh, as well as collaborative presentations, roundtable discussions, and guided neighbourhood walks. The approach emphasized 'slow research' — a relational and reciprocal methodology grounded in listening, observation, and respectful engagement. 'Kundasang is a repository of Indigenous wisdom, memory, and resistance,' said Dr Tangit. 'This workshop is not just a return to a research site; it is a return to a living archive of knowledge. Neighbourhoods like these challenge us to rethink justice, belonging, and coexistence in Southeast Asia.' Dr Somiah highlighted the significance of the workshop's deliberate and reflective pace. 'We are not rushing through theory or data. We are walking, listening, sharing meals, and participating in ritual. This is research that is relational, reciprocal, and real,' she said. Representatives from institutions such as the University of New South Wales, Leiden University, the National University of Singapore, and the University of the Philippines Diliman were in attendance, alongside grassroots partners like the CRIBS Foundation. The event underscored Seannet's ongoing commitment to community-rooted scholarship and intergenerational dialogue, positioning neighbourhoods not only as sites of academic inquiry but as vibrant spaces of creativity, resistance, and meaning-making within Southeast Asia's evolving urban landscapes. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ensuring no one left out

Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Abdul Hakim said JPKK and village chiefs play a crucial role in helping the government to safeguard the welfare of the people. LAHAD DATU: Village Development and Security Committees (JPKK) and village chiefs have been urged to be more proactive in carrying out their roles to ensure that no members of the community are left out from receiving government assistance. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Tungku Divisional head, Datuk Abdul Hakim Gulam Hassan, said JPKK and village chiefs play a crucial role in helping the government to safeguard the welfare of the people. Advertisement He said every JPKK and village chief must take a more proactive approach, regardless of political background. 'The role of the JPKK and village chiefs is important not only in voicing the development needs of their respective villages but, more importantly, in looking after the welfare of the people. 'JPKK and village chiefs are closer to the community and understand their needs better. Relay these needs to the leaders or responsible parties so that the people can receive the assistance they deserve.' Abdul Hakim said this after distributing aid to 25 families in Mukim Silabukan during his visit to the grassroots on Monday. The outreach activity is one of the programmes to engage with local residents – not only to deliver aid, but also to see first-hand the realities of people's lives, especially among the less fortunate. He said the role of the JPKK, village chiefs and local leaders in providing information will help ensure that aid reaches the intended target groups. In addition, Abdul Hakim encouraged welfare bodies such as the Sabah Zakat Center and the Welfare Department to conduct more frequent 'turun padang' (going down to meet the grassroots) visits to identify those genuinely in need. 'We know that the Welfare Department and Sabah Zakat Centre are active in helping the people, but we urge them to carry out more such outreach activities so that no one is left behind. 'This is because not everyone knows how to navigate the process of applying for government or welfare-related aid,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
