Memorial service to be held for Nicholas Parsons who was killed volunteering in Ukraine
Nicholas Parsons, 28, was working in the country's war-torn east with Prevail Together, a US and UK-based group that sends volunteers into Ukraine.
He was killed alongside the charity's co-founder Chris Garrett, as well as another team member who was severely injured in an incident near Izyum on May 6.
Mr Parsons heartbroken friends have been raising money to help his family 'give him the send off he deserves' at a service in Townsville on Thursday.
Lachie Romer organised the fundraiser, which has seen people donate more than $22,000, saying on the tribute page they had lost their beautiful mate far too soon.
'It still doesn't feel real, and it's hard to find the right words to say,' he said.
'Nic was one of those people you just loved being around — always up for a laugh, always there when you needed him, and someone who made life better just by being in it.
'Let's come together and do this for Nic — for the good times, the laughs, and the memories we'll never forget. Rest easy, legend. We'll miss you forever.'
A funeral will be held for Mr Parsons at the Morley Funeral Home, followed by a wake at the Townsville RSL.

Two killed after light crashes into paddock, catches alight near Toowoomba, Queensland
Two men have been killed after a light plane crashed into a paddock before catching on fire in Queensland's Toowoomba region. Early investigations indicate the aircraft crashed near Oakey Cooyar Rd at Devon Park, about two hours from Brisbane, shortly after 3pm on Sunday. A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said four crews rushed to the scene just before 3.20pm and extinguished a blaze from the plane, which had caught fire. Queensland Police said the two male occupants were declared deceased at the scene and that Forensic Crash Unit were investigating the circumstances around the incident. They will assist investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau who confirmed on Sunday afternoon they would investigating the crash. The ATSB identified the aircraft as a twin turboprop Reims Cessna F406, and that officers were being deployed from Brisbane and Canberra. The investigators, who specialise in aircraft operations and maintenance, will conduct a range of 'evidence-gathering activities', including site and wreckage examination. 'Investigators will also seek to interview involved parties, and collect relevant recorded information including flight tracking data,' the ATSB said in a statement. 'As well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.' Anyone with footage of the aircraft at 'any phase of the flight' or following the crash were urged to contact the ATSB. A report will also be prepared for the information of the coroner.

Second case of rare mpox strain discovered in traveller

He was not contagious on the return journey to Australia from Africa, and those close contacts that he has been in contact including at the emergency ward and other locations are being contact traced right now and identified." That's Queensland's Health Minister Tim Nicholls, confirming a new strain of mpox virus has been detected in a man who's just returned to the south-east of the state from a trip to Africa. He says Mpox is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus. "Mpox is not easily spread. It is only spread or it can only spread through close or intimate contact. It is particularly spread by close sexual contact and particularly for gay men and people engaging with sex is the primary cause of the contagious spread." Dr Geoffrey Playford is the head of infectious diseases at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Queensland. He says the rare Clade 1 strain of mpox has only been seen once before in Australia, also in a returned traveller. "Over the last year and a half in Queensland, we've had 135 cases in mpox clade 2 - this is the first case of clade 1 and the second time in Australia we've had clade 1. The other case was in New South Wales in May." Mr Nicholls says the public should NOT be concerned. "We think that there are 19 community contacts and 40 staff contacts that have been in contact with the patient. At the moment his symptoms are asymptomatic. They are not showing any signs of the clade 1 mpox, but they are isolating. The family involves children in high school, primary school and childcare centres and the high school, primary school and childcare centres either have been or are in the process of being identified." Dr Playford says authorities are not worried either. He says fortunately in this case the clinical presentation is relatively mild and there are no particular concerns for the patient's health. "And all of our efforts at the moment is to identify contacts using national guidelines to undertake quarantine where the very close contacts have been identified, again in line with the national guidelines." The close contacts will be offered a vaccine that is highly effective against mpox -either preventing or making the disease significantly milder and shorter. Mr Nicholls says over a year ago there were some restrictions on the availability of the vaccine. But now, Queensland has ample supplies - and the vaccine is provided free of charge through sexual health clinics and some GPs [[general practitioners]]. The Queensland government is advising anyone who suspects they may have the virus to seek medical advice from their local doctor, sexual health clinic or public health unit.
