'India reserves right to pre-empt terror threats'
Jaishankar: India has every right to defend its people
India has made it unequivocally clear to the United States that it will not let the threat of nuclear retaliation deter its right to act against terrorism.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar warned that there will be no impunity for terrorists, nor for the governments that shelter and finance them."We are very clear that there will be no impunity for terrorists, that we will not deal with them any longer as proxies and spare the govt which supports and finances and, in many ways, motivates them. We will not allow nuclear blackmail to prevent us from responding" he said in the US, as quoted by ToI, in a blunt statement amid renewed Pakistani efforts to internationalise the so-called Kashmir issue.India has maintained that Kashmir is a bilateral dispute, and that New Delhi will not accept any third party mediation.India's firm messaging comes just days after Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir was hosted in Washington, prompting concern in New Delhi over Washington's engagements with Rawalpindi's military establishment.Against this backdrop, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also conveyed India's security red lines to the US, underscoring that India retains the right to act—pre-emptively if needed—against any cross-border terror threats emanating from Pakistan.During a 20-minute phone conversation with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conveyed that India reserves the right to defend itself and to pre-empt future attacks from across the border, according to sources cited by ToI.Singh reiterated that 'India's actions were measured, non-escalatory, proportionate and focused' during Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 to target terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).Singh also appreciated the United States' continued support for India's fight against terrorism, while urging faster movement on pending defence projects. These include the delivery of GE-F404 jet engines for the indigenous Tejas Mark-1A fighters, and the six Apache helicopters ordered in 2020, which are now expected to arrive by the end of the year. The ministers also discussed enhancing operational cooperation, logistics sharing, and expanding joint military exercises as part of strengthening bilateral defence ties.At a press briefing during his ongoing visit to the United States, EAM S Jaishankar made a strong pitch for zero tolerance against terrorism, as reported by ET Bureau. He stated that India would continue to exercise its sovereign right to respond to terror threats and expects international partners to recognise that stance.'A word about terrorism in the light of our recent experience. The world must display zero tolerance. Victims and perpetrators must never be equated. India has every right to defend its people against terrorism and we will exercise that right. We expect our Quad partners to understand and appreciate that,' Jaishankar said.

DMK MLA launches outreach drive in Trichy
1 2 Trichy: Ahead of the 2026 assembly election, Manachanallur DMK MLA S Kathiravan launched 'Makkaludan Manachanallur' (Manachanallur with people), a grievance redressal drive to receive petitions from all villages in his constituency. The MLA said that he would visit one panchayat a day, and people from hamlets within the panchayat will be mobilized in open areas to share their grievances. The drive takes place from 5pm to 9pm following which biriyani is served to the villagers. "Since July 14, I have covered five panchayats. Some panchayats will have two hamlets while some up to seven, and all hamlets will be focussed," Kathiravan told TOI. My team would then follow up with the petitions on behalf of villagers to revenue and DRDA departments, he added. Most of the petitions received were for availing 1,000 financial assistance provided for women, and for free house pattas. Party sources recalled that one of the reasons for the early outreach programme is due to tough times faced by the MLA during the 2021 assembly election campaign. While the MLA hails from a non-dominant caste (reddiyar) in the constituency, a few villages with mutharaiyars as the majority caste had stopped Kathiravan from campaigning in the 2021 assembly election. Since Manachanallur became an assembly segment after delimitations in 2008, Kathiravan was the first DMK candidate to be elected. "Villagers have accepted me now, the reception is good even in areas where AIADMK was strong in the past," the MLA said. Kathiravan, son of educationalist A Srinivasan, founder of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Group, added that he fulfilled the promise of providing medical care to around 60,000 people from his constituency at his hospitals in Samayapuram, Trichy and Perambalur.

Prioritise national interest over politics, V-P Dhankhar tells parties
Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has urged all parties to prioritise national interest over politics and called for bonhomie and constructive engagement ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. 'I appeal to everyone in the political spectrum, please have mutual respect. Please don't trade unbecoming language on television or otherwise against the leadership of one party or the other,' he said, while addressing the inaugural programme for the eighth batch of participants of the Rajya Sabha Internship Programme (RSIP) at the Vice-President's Enclave on Sunday (July 20, 2025). Mr. Dhankhar said a thriving democracy can not afford an atmosphere of constant acrimony. 'Every Indian political party and every parliamentarian, to my knowledge, is a nationalist at the end of the day. He believes in the nation. He believes in the progress of the nation…,' he said. Against the backdrop of Opposition parties demanding a detailed discussion on Operation Sindoor and U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated claims of brokering peace between India and Pakistan during the recent conflict, the Vice-President said that politics should not be prioritised over national interest. 'Let us not have politics when it is an issue of national security, national concern and that can happen because India has to stand proud amongst the comity of nations. We are well regarded in the world. The very idea that Bharat can be controlled from outside goes against our claim. We are a nation, a sovereign nation. Why should our political agenda be set by forces that are inimical to Bharat? Why should our agenda be even influenced by our enemies?' he said.
