Gaza civil defence reports 39 killed near aid centres in Israeli fire
Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal attributed the fatalities to 'Israeli gunfire.' One witness, Abdul Aziz Abed, 37, told AFP he and his relatives went to Al-Tina in Khan Yunis before dawn but only encountered bullets instead of food. Three other witnesses also accused Israeli troops of opening fire.
The Israeli military responded by stating it had identified 'suspects' approaching troops in Rafah, posing a threat. Soldiers fired warning shots after calls to turn back were ignored, the military said, adding the incident was under review. The GHF, now the main aid distributor in Gaza, denied reports of deaths near its sites, urging people not to gather overnight.
Meanwhile, an Israeli strike on a house near Nuseirat in central Gaza killed 12, according to the civil defence. The war, triggered by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, has left Gaza in dire humanitarian conditions, with severe malnutrition and aid blockades worsening the crisis.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's police chief is set to be sacked, the country's speaker of parliament announced Tuesday (July 22) after he was found guilty of heading a criminal network at an impeachment hearing. Inspector-General Deshabandu Tennakoon would become the first head of police in the island's history to be impeached after being deemed unfit to lead its 85,000-strong police force. He also stands accused of authorising an ill-fated raid in 2023, which triggered a gun battle between rival police units in the coastal resort town of Weligama and led to the death of an officer. Sri Lanka's apex court suspended him in July 2024, pending the outcome of a separate case that questioned the legality of his appointment by former president Ranil Wickremesinghe. A state prosecutor told the court this year that Tennakoon was the "head of a criminal network". This latest move against Tennakoon comes days after the independent National Police Commission sacked the number two officer in the police force, Senior Deputy Inspector General Nilantha Jayawardena. France urges Israel to allow foreign press access to Gaza
PARIS: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has called on Israel to permit foreign journalists to enter Gaza, where famine warnings persist after 21 months of conflict. Speaking from eastern Ukraine, Barrot told France Inter radio, 'I ask that the free and independent press be allowed to access Gaza to show what is happening there and to bear witness.' His remarks followed a warning from AFP about the safety of Palestinian freelance journalists working with the agency in Gaza. AFP urged Israel to allow them and their families to evacuate. Barrot confirmed France was addressing the issue, stating, 'We hope to be able to evacuate some collaborators of journalists in the coming weeks.' The group highlighted the case of a 30-year-old freelancer whose older brother reportedly 'fell because of hunger.' 'But their lives are in danger, which is why we urge the Israeli authorities to allow their immediate evacuation along with their families.' In a statement, MAHAR said the worsening humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) with foreign backing, has resulted in engineered famine, widespread child malnutrition, and the deaths of hundreds at so-called 'aid sites.' MAHAR Adviser Nurul Izzah Anwar said the genuine humanitarian assistance must be unconditional and free from coercion or military control. "What we are witnessing in Gaza is the brutal erosion of humanity. The international community must act now and silence is complicity,' she said in the statement. Meanwhile, MAHAR President Jismi Johari said that the suffering of the Palestinians cannot be allowed to continue under the guise of controlled humanitarianism. "GHF has stripped civilians of their dignity and turned aid into a weapon of fear. MAHAR stands resolutely in support of restoring full access to United Nations (UN)-coordinated relief efforts and reopening all land borders for safe and unrestricted humanitarian assistance,' he said. The organisation has joined the international call to immediately dismantle the GHF system, restore UN-led humanitarian operations and reopen all border crossings for safe and unimpeded aid delivery. In full solidarity with the Palestinians, MAHAR rejects widespread aid airdrops over Gaza, citing Israeli control of the airspace and concerns over safety and effectiveness. "Previous airdrops have tragically resulted in civilian casualties, including people being crushed while attempting to retrieve aid. In several cases, the aid landed in militarised zones, exposing desperate civilians to sniper fire -- mirroring the same fatal risks reported at GHF-controlled sites,' it said.
