Politics Looms Over the World's Biggest Contemporary Art Fair
At the V.I.P. opening of Art Basel in Switzerland on Tuesday morning, American gallerists were greeted with three kisses on the cheek — and hushed questions about the man in the White House.
European collectors and museum leaders wanted to know how Los Angeles artists were responding to the arrival of military troops on their streets during the administration's efforts to control anti-deportation protests. Could the Smithsonian Institution maintain its independence from the federal government? Should they delete social media before trying to enter the United States for a gallery visit? And will international museums continue their policy of lending art to American institutions?
'You can time your watch that there is always a tragedy before, during or after Art Basel,' said Iwan Wirth, the president and co-founder of Hauser & Wirth, one of the largest galleries in the world. 'It is a bubble the art world dives into, but there is still uncertainty.'
That uncertainty picked up shortly after President Trump's inauguration in January, starting with executive orders that banned diversity initiatives at federally funded organizations. Since then, the White House has attempted to overhaul the Smithsonian, successfully removed the director of the National Portrait Gallery and cut millions of dollars in arts funding, telling administrators that federal support was being redirected to 'projects that reflect the nation's rich artistic heritage and creativity.'
But the greatest effect on the ultrawealthy who come to one of the world's most important fairs for contemporary and modern art is the uncertainty around the threat of tariffs and the weakening of the dollar, according to interviews with more than a dozen art specialists. There were few major American collectors seen at the art fair's previews on Tuesday, and several of Basel's luxury hotels had rare vacancies that suggested smaller audiences and a growing regionalism in the art market.

It's probably not even real, but I'll feel like, 'Oh, this eyelash feels like it's gonna come out,' even though it's not,' Munn explained on the Monday, June 30 episode of the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast. 'And then when you pull it, there was a quick second of pain. And then there's a satisfaction and then immediate regret.' Munn shared that the condition first presented itself when she was dating actor Chris Pine. The exes reportedly dated for several months in late 2009 into early 2010. 'So there was a paparazzi shot of he and I, and it was the first time I was in the tabloids,' Munn recalled. Munn said she was attending a small event and had asked the costume team on The Daily Show for 'the ugliest dress' they had. 'They found this blue old prom dress with big pom poms on the side. And I was like, 'Oh, wonder if I can make it into the worst best dressed list?' ' Munn said, laughing. 'And then I did! I couldn't believe it worked. The fact that I was like, they know who I am to even put me on this list. It was very exciting.' At the time, Munn said she left Pine's apartment, noting, 'There were paparazzi outside his house because he had been in Star Trek and all this. And they caught photos of me. I was like, 'Oh my god.' And when it got out, one of my friends was like, 'Hey, you're dating Chris Pine.' ' Munn said she then did the 'horrible thing' of reading the comments on the images. 'And they were like, 'I think she set this up. Who's carrying a clutch during the day?' ' Munn shared, noting, 'That began my trichotillomania.' European security tops Denmark's EU presidency priorities
Pushing countries to keep vows to boost defence spending and bolstering Europe's "dangerous" security will top Denmark's agenda as it takes over the European Union's rotating presidency on Tuesday, according to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Denmark is among European nations put on edge by Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and who have already increased military spending. "We want something with our presidency. Security is clearly defined as the top priority," Frederiksen said in an interview with the Politiken daily published on Sunday. "We have a new NATO goal that has been adopted. For that to happen, we need to rearm Europe. Once the NATO goal is in place, most other things come down to EU policy," she said. NATO members agreed last week to invest 3.5 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) on core military spending and 1.5 percent on broader security-related areas such as infrastructure by 2035. Spain has called the goal "unreasonable" and asked for flexibility. During its six month turn as EU president, Denmark wants to push ahead with EU plans presented in March to increase EU defence capabilities by simplifying procedures and offering countries loans to finance investment in Europe's defence industry. Europe's security situation is "unstable, and because it's unstable, it's dangerous," Frederiksen told Politiken. "If we look at the history of Europe, we know that conflicts tend to spread. There is so much tension today and that on its own can generate more tension," she added. - A Secure Europe - Denmark is one of Europe's biggest donors of aid to Ukraine. In power since 2019, Frederiksen has significantly increased Denmark's defence spending to more than three percent of GDP. Copenhagen has been a staunch US ally but has increasingly switched its focus to European security after US President Donald Trump's threats to annex Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory. In its programme for "A Secure Europe", the Danish EU presidency has also prioritised the fight against illegal migration, vowing to come up with "new and innovative solutions". Denmark's strict migration policies have spread across Europe, and the country hopes to build EU consensus on externalising asylum procedures outside Europe, and restricting the scope of rulings from the European Court of Human Rights. "Irregular migration cannot be allowed to threaten European cohesion," Denmark said in its official EU presidency programme.
