MTV veteran Van Toffler returns to produce VMAs for Paramount
Who says you can't go home again?
MTV's influential architect, Van Toffler, is returning to Paramount Global in a multi-year deal to help produce the Video Music Awards, which has long been a signature pop-culture event for the network and music industry.
Paramount said Tuesday that it had struck a multi-year arrangement with Toffler, through his Gunpowder & Sky content studio, to 'supercharge' the VMA's 'into a week-long, multiplatform celebration of music and music videos.'
The show is set for Sept. 7 at the UBS Arena on Long Island in New York.
During his 28 years at the company, then known as Viacom, Toffler built MTV into a ratings and youth culture juggernaut, overseeing such touchstones as 'The Osbournes,' 'Beavis and Butthead,' 'Jackass,' 'Unplugged,' and the VMA's.
Toffler exited a decade ago to launch Gunpowder & Sky, which has produced documentaries about Sheryl Crow, Lil Peep and others. It also has experimented with podcasts, digital series and augmented reality.
The reunion comes as Paramount struggles to retain the cachet of some of its biggest franchises, including the VMA's, as the cable television landscape shrinks because of the shift to streaming.
This year marks the first time the MTV stalwart will be simulcast on Paramount's broadcast network CBS in a bid to expand the audience and give CBS more live programming to help kick off the fall television season. The show also will stream on Paramount+.
'The VMAs have always been where music and spectacle collide, and no one embodies that spirit more than Van Toffler,' Paramount co-CEOs Chris McCarthy and George Cheeks said in a joint statement. 'Bringing Van back to the VMAs, along with Gunpowder & Sky, is about reigniting the rebellious soul of the show with a week-long music immersion and delivering global moments that are impossible to ignore.'
MTV plans a week of music videos to try to resurrect the magic of the era when 20-somethings turned to MTV for music and entertainment. The approach will be tailored for today's audiences with current videos. Past VMA winners and former MTV personalities will return to curate their favorite videos.
'We're launching a celebration of music that spans one week, every screen and every generation,' Toffler said.
He will produce the show in conjunction with the firm, Den of Thieves.
This year's show comes as Paramount is in the process of being sold to David Ellison's Skydance Media. For that $8 billion deal, approved last July, to move forward, Paramount needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission.
Paramount needs the FCC to approve the transfer of CBS' station licenses to the Ellison family.
But the deal hit a snag over amid negotiations to settle President Trump's $20-billion lawsuit over '60 Minutes' edits to a Kamala Harris interview last fall.
The delay in the deal's approval has cast a shadow over Paramount, complicating business decisions, including nabbing the streaming rights to Comedy Central's long-running cartoon, 'South Park.'

Paramount May Not Be Done With ‘Transformers' Movies Yet
After 2024's Transformers One came and went, it's been a question of whether we'd actually see the Autobots and Decepticons on the big screen. The answer now appears to be 'yes,' and not just because Paramount's still pretending that crossover with G.I. Joe is happening. According to Matt Belloni at Puck News, the studio is spinning up several Transformers movies. One is said to be helmed by One director Josh Cooley, and will be live-action. The other is said to be coming from ex-franchise steward Michael Bay, who's currently operating as a 'hands-on producer' but could potentially direct. Bay dipped out after 2017's The Last Knight and has maintained a producer credit on later films, but the franchise hasn't been hitting those same financial highs since his exit behind the camera. Meanwhile, Puck didn't have any information on the other three rumored Transformers projects, and the G.I. Joe crossover is said to have two separate ideas that are both in early stages. Either way, this isn't exactly a new position for the franchise: pre-Last Knight, there were said to be a lot of Transformers movies in the works, but plans for a cinematic universe were halted after Knight underperformed. In 2021, Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto was attached to direct a film, and Paramount's talked about doing a sequel to 2023's Rise of the Beasts. All Paramount reportedly has to do is have a Transformers movie in production by 2029 to maintain the rights to the IP. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actor Ethan Peck, who plays Mr. Spock, is opening up about starring in the beloved Paramount+ series. While speaking to Cherry the Geek TV at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival on June 14, Peck explained why working on Star Trek: SNW can be intimidating at times. "It's more intimidating than inspiring to be honest with you because there's so much incredible work that's being done, there's so much money involved," said Peck during the interview. "And of course, as an actor, you're like, 'Okay show up, now do it.' You know what I mean? So it's pretty intimidating. But now, that we've been on this for years, I think we're a little comfortable with that responsibility." Peck also shared that he was not a Star Trek fan before starring as Mr. Spock, who was originally played by late actor Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek: The Original Series, which aired from 1966 to 1969. As fans are aware, Star Trek: SNW is a prequel to Star Trek: TOS. In addition, Peck said he didn't realize he was auditioning for the role of Spock when reading for the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, which aired in 2019. "I didn't know what I was auditioning for when I first got the audition and when I found out what it was I was shocked. And stunned," said Peck during the interview. Peck also shared that he believed Star Trek: SNW's premise of exploration and appreciating each other's differences is an important message. "The whole purpose is kind of to display or make an example of a way of being that isn't so hateful and fearful. And so it's really about being curious about that, which is other from you. And I think that's a message that never ceases to be important," said the 39-year-old actor. It reenters those lists at Nos. 8 and 14, respectively. It wouldn't be unusual for a musician as celebrated as Eminem to score one or two hits in the United States, even with decades-old tunes. But what is notable is that "Lose Yourself" remains a top 10 bestseller — albeit only on a genre-specific roster. "Lose Yourself" is approaching 500 weeks on both of the charts on which it currently appears. If it can hold on for another month on the Rap Digital Song Sales tally, it will hit that milestone. While it still has several dozen more frames to go on the broader R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales ranking, it seems likely that it will eventually make it to that landmark figure as well. Amazingly, despite the fact that "Lose Yourself" has spent nearly 500 spans on both charts, it has yet to reach No. 1 on either of them. Eminem's smash has stalled in the runner-up space on both sales lists, coming frustratingly close to adding to his growing roster of champions on more than one occasion. Eminem's Oscar-Winning Smash Eminem released "Lose Yourself" in October 2002. The song served as the lead single from the 8 Mile soundtrack. The tune was a huge commercial success, ruling the Hot 100 for 12 consecutive frames and dominating multiple other rankings around the world. In addition to becoming yet another hit for the rapper, "Lose Yourself" also won Eminem several Grammy Awards and even the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making him the first rapper to snag that prize.
