Tank Turn Returns: Rivian Teases Long-Awaited Feature
The tank turn quickly became a sensation, but before Rivian could make it to production, CEO RJ Scaringe nixed the feature, citing concerns over trail damage. That move was intended to reinforce Rivian's environmentally responsible image, but left early fans disappointed.
Now, in a teaser clip posted to social media, Tank Turn appears to be making its long-awaited return. The six-second video shows a second-gen R1S performing a 90-degree turn before revealing the etched launch date of July 8, 2025, written in dust on its side. The feature will debut with the company's most powerful configuration yet: the Quad-Motor R1S and R1T, which are expected to bring this long-shelved feature to life.
Rivian announced its second-generation R1 models last year, including overhauled mechanicals, a better electrical architecture, and greatly improved autonomy and infotainment systems.
Among those updates was the new Quad-Motor drivetrain, delivering a staggering 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 lb-ft of torque, allowing a 2.5-second sprint to 60 mph for the R1T (2.6 seconds for the R1S). However, at the time, it was only available for reservation, without an exact delivery timeline. That changes next week.
The Quad Launch Edition, which will arrive with every update for second-generation Rivians, will finally open for orders. These new Rivians go beyond spec-sheet frenzy; they come with real improvements: zonal electrical layouts that reduce wiring, a redesigned heat pump for range efficiency, a 420-mile Max Pack, and a new Autonomy Platform with 360-degree vision and AI-powered driving assistance. Even the interior experience has been elevated, with Dolby Atmos audio, Apple Music integration, and a new Unreal Engine-based UI.
Getting access to the return of Tank Turn – and everything else the second-gen R1S and R1T offer – won't come cheap. Pricing starts at $75,900 for the R1S and $69,900 for the R1T, but the Quad Launch Edition is expected to be priced at around $115,900.
We'll know the exact figures soon enough, but for now, know that reservations require a $3,000 refundable deposit. Deliveries are expected to begin shortly after the official July 8 announcement. If you missed the hype the first time around, now's your chance to spin back in.

Valpo Council approves new Midwood Terrace annexation despite concerns
The Valparaiso City Council approved annexation for an 80-acre parcel in rural Center Township as part of a project led by Lake Acquisitions, Inc. and Prairie Development, LLC. The council passed the annexation 5-2, with councilmen Jack Pupillo, 4th district, and Peter Anderson, 5th district, voting in opposition. The area is currently zoned Medium Density Single-Family (R2) in this unincorporated area of fields in Porter County, and the petitioners have also been granted their request to change the zoning for the property as Urban Residential (UR) and General Residential (GR) which will allow for multi-family townhouse structures. But that rezone has current homeowners in adjacent neighborhoods concerned about additional traffic and an oversaturation of addresses. The Porter County Plan Commission previously approved the new subdivision primary plat by developer Olthof Homes. The approximately 80-acre property is made up of four parcels located in the northwest corner of CR 175 West and CR 500 North. The annexation vote and discussion started last month at the Valparaiso City Council's June 9 meeting with a first reading, discussion and public input and continued with a second public hearing and final vote of Resolution No. 6 and Ordinance No. 11 at the June 23 meeting. Valparaiso City Planner Bob Thompson and Kevin Pauzer, an architect and project representative with Olthof Homes, gave a detailed presentation at both of the meetings. Following concerns raised by both council members and members of the public on June 9 about the housing density planned for the development, Olthof Homes scaled back some of the structures to allow for more parking and green space. The revised project will have 147 single-family homes, an additional 18 larger single-family home units, and 126 townhouses. 'The developer has already reached out to Valparaiso Superintendent Dr. (Jim) McCall about this planned community and the impact and need for schools, and the superintendent does not have a problem with any of it, and just asked to be kept informed,' Thompson said. Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas said he too spoke to McCall and the new community did not present any problems. However, McCall said it is likely in the future a new elementary school would likely be built in the same area to parallel population growth. Phil Page, who lives near the proposed development, spoke at the June 23 meeting about 'too much traffic along 500 North.' 'I like to jog in that area and it's already dangerous with the amount of traffic flow,' Page said. 'Even with the concessions made by the developer for few homes, this is still too urban for that area. I understand that Olthof Homes wants to make money by selling as many homes as possible. The single-family homes are fine, but not the townhouses.' Mike Pratscher, who also lives in the area, said he is worried about Olthof's history in other communities for creating developments with poor drainage. 'I share the concerns of others about drainage problems after I discovered Olthof has paid more than 100 fines to the town of Chesterton from October 2020 to March 2022 because of poor stormwater management for the Springdale subdivision,' Pratcher said. 'I'm also (worried) that some of these townhomes will eventually become rentals which leads to increased crime rate.' Valparaiso City Council Member Barbara Domer (D-3) said this development is needed to give more residents more choices of houses. 'In my review process, I looked at the higher density concerns and based on what a previous housing consultant to the city advised, looking at census and data resources, there are roughly 1,000 households in our city that are looking within the city to advance their household needs,' Domer said. 'I refer to this as 'our missing middle,' for affordable housing for those ready to move within our city for a new type of housing for their growing needs.' Pupillo and Anderson countered that the inclusion of townhouses in the development make the planned neighborhood too dense 'without enough concessions being made, besides dropping the five units in the revised plan.' Costas said he recognized 'change is hard' and 'our borders are growing.' 'Having a variety of housing options with our expanding borders of Valparaiso is a good thing,' Costas said. 'I've seen with my experiences over the years, the quality of life still remains and we work through the issues. For many of you speaking here tonight, I can recall when your subdivisions were proposed and there were those who spoke out against it. Had we listened, you wouldn't be living where you are now. In this area, there are very large lots and various size spaces in developments like Peppercreek. We need to make sure we have housing for everyone.'

The Most Reliable Car Brand Isn't Toyota Or Honda, According To Consumer Reports
When you hear Toyota or Honda, the first word that often comes to mind is reliability. However, in Consumer Reports' latest reliability survey, another brand has taken the top spot. While Lexus and Toyota still have some of the best new cars and SUVs under $30,000, Subaru has emerged as the most reliable brand for 2025. So, what sets Subaru apart? First, let's understand how our friends at Consumer Reports conduct their annual survey. The publication asks its subscribers about the issues they have encountered with their vehicles over the past year. Feedback was requested on specific trouble spots, including the powertrain, suspension, steering, brakes, climate systems, build quality, and in-car electronics. Using data from over 300,000 vehicles, this information was evaluated to identify potential issues and assign a predicted reliability score to each model. Based on these scores, Consumer Reports provides an overall rating for each brand. Using a 100-point scoring system, Subaru ranked as the top brand with a score of 68 out of 100, followed by Lexus with 65 and Toyota with 62. All three scores are classified as "above average" reliability by Consumer Reports. In fourth place is Honda (59), while the least reliable brands were Cadillac (27) and Rivian (14). Read more: Consumer Reports' 10 Best Used Cars Under $20,000 Are A Great Way To Dodge Republican Tariffs Subaru's back-to-basics mentality, characterized by conservative redesigns, shared components, and a smaller model lineup, likely contributes to its strong reliability rating. With each redesign, Subaru tends to adopt a more incremental approach, minimizing the implementation of new technology and engineering that could lead to issues, particularly among first-year models. Furthermore, Subaru maintains a relatively small lineup; while Toyota offers over 20 models in the United States, Subaru produces only nine. Within this smaller lineup, Consumer Reports notes that Subaru models share many components, which can further reduce the risk of introducing new problems. For instance, the Subaru Impreza, Crosstrek, and WRX are all related models. Another example of simplification is seen within its models; the popular Forester has offered only a single powertrain since 2019. However, this changes with the new Forester Hybrid. Since individual model ratings influence the overall brand rating, it's important to highlight the Forester's stellar 98 out of 100 reliability rating. This not only positions it as the MVP of the lineup but also makes it one of the most reliable models evaluated, with a near-perfect rating. The Impreza also secured a well-above-average reliability rating, earning an impressive score of 89. Meanwhile, the Crosstrek (75), Legacy (66), and Outback (61) all received better-than-average ratings, while the Ascent earned an average rating of 50. Only one model received a below-average score: the Solterra (38). Neither the Subaru BRZ nor the WRX had sufficient reliability survey data available to be considered alongside the other seven models. We've discussed why Subaru has performed well, but why has Toyota dropped in the reliability rankings? First, it's important to note that Toyota is ranked third, and its Lexus luxury division is ranked second — both impressive achievements considering that 22 brands were evaluated. By offering twice as many models as Subaru, including a minivan, two pickup trucks, several mid-size SUVs, and a full-size SUV, Toyota's increased variety of unique models can add more complexity, which may lead to more issues and potentially impact its overall score. Most Toyota models received average, above-average, or well-above-average reliability ratings in the survey. Only three Toyota models scored below average: the bZ4x EV (38), the Tacoma mid-size pickup truck (29), and the Tundra full-size pickup truck (32). Considering that the new Tacoma reportedly experienced transmission issues at under 1,000 miles and the Tundra was part of a massive engine recall, it's not surprising that these trucks lowered the brand's overall average. If it weren't for these low-scoring pickup trucks, Toyota might have surpassed Subaru. Meanwhile, Honda's overall rating is affected by its Prologue crossover EV (30/100), which shares many components with the Chevrolet Blazer EV. Nevertheless, Toyota and Honda remain among the top four brands. With a smaller, simpler lineup, Subaru claims the top spot for reliability this year. However, Toyota and Honda are close behind. While this reliability ranking is based on brand, it's essential to research the specific model you're considering, as even the most reliable brands have vehicles that may encounter issues.
