Sri Lankan Army Chief reviews IMA's 156th Passing Out Parade in Dehradun
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 14 (ANI): The Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun hosted its 156th Passing Out Parade on Saturday, which was reviewed by Sri Lankan Army Chief Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo, RSP, CTF-NDU, PSC, IG. He congratulated the graduating officer cadets on successfully completing their training and praised both cadets and instructors for the parade's discipline, coordination, and presentation.
According to a release, this visit is a reflection of the traditional, strong and historical military relations between the armies of India and Sri Lanka and will further strengthen mutual cooperation. On this occasion, a total of 451 officer cadets of the 156th Regular Course, 45th Technical Entry Scheme (TES) and 139th Technical Graduate Course, 32 foreign cadets from nine friendly nations including Special Commissioned Officers (SCO-54) completed their training and bid a proud farewell to the academy. This day was recorded as another golden chapter in the history of IMA.
During the parade, the officer cadets demonstrated their commitment, pride and confidence by marching in disciplined and passionate steps to inspiring military tunes like 'Saare Jahan Se Accha' and 'Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja'. This historic moment was witnessed by their families, dignitaries and spectators from India and abroad through the media.
Addressing the parade, Reviewing Officer Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo became emotional and said that, as an alumnus of IMA, it was a matter of pride and honour for him to review this historic parade. He recalled how his military journey began from this academy with a simple haircut.
He said that the uniform is not just a symbol of a post, but a complete lifestyle. A true officer earns the trust of his subordinates with his character, conduct and decisions - this respect is not earned only by rank, it is earned by everyday deeds.
Referring to the motto of IMA, Gen Rodrigo emphasised the three fundamental responsibilities - to the nation, to our soldiers and to the families of our brave soldiers. He described the four fundamental values of a soldier - discipline, honesty, integrity and honour - as the keys to success. According to him, discipline is self-restraint, honesty is what remains even when no one is watching, loyalty transcends the bounds of rank, and honour is the sacred trust that comes with the uniform.
He reminded the cadets that they are now part of a proud line of patriots and they must wear this uniform with pride, with a sense of purpose. He especially congratulated the award winners and encouraged other cadets to keep striving. He described the foreign cadets as global ambassadors of the values of IMA.
In his address, the Sri Lanka Army Chief said that IMA not only trains soldiers but also creates future defenders of the nation. He called upon the cadets to lead with wisdom, fight for truth and justice and proudly carry forward the hopes of the nation.
In his concluding remarks, he exhorted the cadets to add a new chapter to the great legacy of IMA and congratulated them for the excellent parade. He also said that the cadets have now become part of a lifelong military brotherhood. He ended his address with the inspiring words of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw - 'Be true, be honest, be fearless.'
The Sword of Honour was awarded by the Reviewing Officer to - Academy Cadet Adjutant Anni Nehra, Gold Medal (First Position in Merit List) - Academy Under Officer Ronit Ranjan Nayak, Silver Medal (Second Position in Merit List) - Academy Cadet Adjutant Anni Nehra, Bronze Medal (Third Position in Merit List) - Battalion Under Officer Anurag Verma.
First Position in Technical Graduate Course - Sergeant Akash Bhadoria (Silver Medal), First Position in TES-45 - Wing Cadet Quarter Master Kapil (Silver Medal), First Position in Foreign Cadet - Foreign Officer Cadet Nishan Balami (Nepal), Chief of Army Staff Banner - Keran Company (for highest performance among 12 companies in Spring Term 2025) were awarded to them.
The Reviewing Officer exhorted all the cadets that 'You are just one step away from the historic and proud moment of your commissioning.' (ANI)

Centre issues Model Rules to States, UTs to aid ease of doing business in agroforestry
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has issued the 'Model Rules for Felling of Trees in Agricultural Lands', with the objective of supporting States and Union Territories in simplifying regulatory frameworks and promoting agroforestry. Agroforestry offers multiple benefits, including enhancing rural livelihoods, improving soil health, conserving biodiversity, increasing tree cover, water conservation, contributing to climate resilience, and reducing pressure on natural forests. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Model Rules aim to establish a streamlined regulatory framework by providing simplified procedures for registering agroforestry lands and managing tree harvesting and transit. The initiative is expected to encourage greater participation and open up opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders to adopt agroforestry practices. The model rules are designed to support the ease of doing business for those involved in tree-based farming systems. By promoting domestic timber production through agroforestry, the approach seeks to close the demand-supply gap, support wood-based industries with locally sourced raw materials and boost exports. The State Level Committee established under the Wood-Based Industries (Establishment and Regulation) Guidelines, 2016, will also be responsible for implementing these model rules. Its role will be to guide the States and Union Territories on promoting agroforestry and enhancing timber production from farmlands by easing regulations related to tree harvesting and timber transportation, particularly for commercially valuable species. The committee will empanel agencies for verifying applications for the felling of trees from agricultural lands. As per the model rules, applicants are required to register their plantations on the National Timber Management System (NTMS) portal, which is being developed. This involves submitting basic plantation data, including land ownership information, location of the farm with a KML file, species, plantation period, etc. The applicants can periodically update the plantation information and upload geotagged photos of the plantation to ensure traceability. Applicants wishing to harvest trees from registered plantations can apply online through the National Timber Management System, providing specific details of the trees intended for felling. Verifying agencies will carry out site inspections, and based on their verification reports, tree felling permits will be issued for agricultural lands. The Divisional Forest Officers will oversee the performance of these agencies through periodic supervision and monitoring. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change have requested States and UTs to examine the model rules and consider their adoption in order to enhance the ease of doing business in agroforestry and incentivise farmers to integrate trees into their farming systems without facing undue procedural hurdles.(ANI)

Hindu spiritual leader receives New York City honour at interfaith event

Radhanath Swami, a leading figure in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was presented with the New York City honour at an event at the organisation's Bhakti Center in Manhattan's East Village. The event, titled 'Foundation of Future', brought together city officials and members of the Hindu spiritual community to celebrate Radhanath Swami's contribution to New York's diverse religious landscape. Deputy Commissioner of International Affairs Dilip Chauhan presented the award on behalf of Mayor Eric Adams, praising the role of faith-based organisations in strengthening the city's social fabric. 'On behalf of New York City's 8.5 million residents, I want to express our gratitude for the incredible work being done here,' Chauhan said during the ceremony, which began with traditional devotional singing known as kirtan. Born Richard Slavin in Chicago in 1950, Radhanath Swami's path to spiritual leadership began with his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement before he travelled to India to study ancient Hindu devotional traditions. Uttarakhand: Two bodies recovered after cloudburst incident in Uttarkashi
Dehradun (Uttarakhand)[India], June 29(ANI): Two bodies have been recovered after nine workers went missing from an under-construction hotel following a cloudburst in the Silai Band area on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi, officials said on Sunday. Bodies of two out of the nine workers have been recovered who went missing from an under-construction hotel, at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunatri road in Uttarkashi, after the cloud burst incident, Uttarkashi District Magistrate's office stated in a statement. There have been landslides at two places before Silai Band and a washout of the road at one place, the statement added. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday reviewed the situation with senior officials at the State Disaster Control Room following the cloudburst incident at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi district. Earlier today, he stated that State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other teams are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations at the landslide-hit Silai Band area in Uttarkashi district. In a post on X, the CM wrote, 'In the tragic incident of a landslide in the Silai Band area of Barkot Tehsil, Uttarkashi district, it has been reported that some workers are missing. Teams including SDRF, NDRF, and others have reached the site and are engaged in intensive relief and rescue operations.' The CM further stated he was in constant contact with the concerned authorities. 'I am in constant contact with the concerned authorities regarding this matter. I pray to God for everyone's safety,' the post further read. Meanwhile, as many as nine workers staying at an under-construction hotel site went missing after a cloudburst severely damaged the construction site at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri Marg in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya, while speaking to ANI, stated, 'Due to a cloud burst in Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri Marg of Uttarkashi district, a hotel under construction has suffered heavy damage. Eighty-nine workers staying at this under-construction hotel site are missing.' 'Eight-nine workers staying at this under-construction hotel site are missing,' Arya stated, adding that the Yamunotri route has also been severely impacted. He also informed that the Yamunotri Marg had also been affected by the heavy rainfall and debris. Furthermore, the Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for 24 hours amid a heavy rain alert. Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey told ANI that the pilgrimage has been temporarily halted as a precaution. 'I have given instructions to the police and administration officials to stop the pilgrims in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Sonprayag and Vikasnagar,' Pandey told. The suspension follows the cloudburst at Silai Band and the ongoing heavy rainfall, which has disrupted travel. Continuous rainfall on Saturday caused severe disruptions across Uttarakhand, including blockage of the National Highway near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. In a post on X, Chamoli Police Uttarakhand stated, 'The Badrinath National Highway is blocked near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. Work is underway to open the road.'The National Highway near Nandprayag is a critical route for pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath, making the clearance of the road a priority. (ANI)
