UK watchdog calls for stricter regulations on buy now, pay later loans

The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has proposed more stringent regulations for Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) providers with the goal of supporting borrowers in the event of financial difficulties. The organisation's rules are set to come into force when BNPL falls under the oversight of the FCA by July 2026, a shift the watchdog and debt-related charities have long campaigned for. In a statement, the FCA's deputy chief executive, Sarah Pritchard, said: 'Our regulation will help consumers navigate their financial lives, with checks on whether they can afford to repay, support when things go wrong and access the right information to make informed decisions.' The FCA said related BNPL products will come 'under proper regulation' in line with the rest of the consumer credit sector, requiring providers to ensure borrowers can afford repayments and offer backing where necessary. Among the suggestions is that of an extension of Section 75 protections, which would make BNPL firms and retailers jointly responsible for faulty or undelivered goods, placing more responsibility on merchant partners. Senior director of risk at Broadstone, Richard Pinch, said the move to tighten regulations will mean providers come under increased pressure to 'enhance creditworthiness and affordability assessments and also demonstrate robust consumer protections'. Pinch added: 'This marks a significant shift away from the relatively light-touch model BNPL firms have operated under, and places greater emphasis on affordability checks, credit reporting and fair treatment of borrowers.'

Rain delivers embedded on-demand pay integration within Workday

Rain, a leading provider of earned wage access (EWA) solutions, today announced the launch of the first fully embedded on-demand pay integration within Workday. 0 This integration allows Workday customers to enable Rain directly within the Workday platform, eliminating the need for third-party implementations, system changes, or data handoffs. Employers can activate Rain in minutes, providing their employees immediate access to earned wages through a native Workday experience. With financial stresses at the top of mind for many employees and turnover rates soaring, employers are seeking new benefits to boost retention; EWA benefits help address both. Key features of the integration include: Direct Enablement in Workday: Employers can activate Rain's EWA solution with a simple configuration, with no disruption to existing payroll systems Frictionless Employee Access: Employees access Rain's functionality directly within Workday, with no separate login, app, or enrollment process Enterprise-Grade Security and Support: The solution maintains enterprise-level controls, with 24/7 U.S.-based support provided by Rain 'This is a significant milestone for on-demand pay,' said Fred Choquette, Chief Operating Officer at Rain. 'Through our integration with Workday, employers can now offer earned wage access to their employees directly through their HCM platform, without any additional operational burden. This sets a new standard for how financial wellness benefits should be deployed at scale.' Rain's solution is used by over 3.5 million employees and has facilitated more than $3 billion in early wage access. Employers leveraging the solution have seen measurable improvements in workforce productivity and retention. Rain users average a 46% reduction in six-month attrition and work 20 hours more per month than non-Rain users. Sibos| FFNews This partnership follows Rain's $75 million Series B financing and marks a strategic expansion of its embedded finance capabilities, including its recently announced collaboration with Marqeta.

Sky users given 48-hour price alert and your bill could go up tomorrow

Sky has told some of its broadband customers that their bills are rising - are you affected? Most of the UK's biggest TV and internet providers have already hiked prices in 2025, with the majority of bills going up in April. Now, Sky is back with a new cost increase, and it's bad news for anyone who uses the firm's NOW broadband platform. It was confirmed back in May that some users would face paying more, now that deadline is almost here with the changes coming into force tomorrow, July 4. ‌ Sky has revealed that the upcoming changes will affect those who have signed up for Brilliant Broadband, Fab Fibre and Super Fibre plans. If you use NOW and have joined via one of these broadband bundles you can expect to see an extra £3 per month disappearing from your bank account. ‌ NOW seems well aware that this price news won't please everyone. 'We understand that price increases are never welcome," a NOW spokesperson said. "However, to continue improving and investing in our services, we need to adjust our pricing. Starting 4th July, the monthly cost of our NOW legacy Broadband products, including Fab Fibre, Super Fibre, and Brilliant Broadband plans, will increase by £3 each.' When the hike was first announced, NOW said users could leave the service free of charge, but that was only available if customers acted within 31 days of being informed. If you don't want to pay extra, it's worth checking your emails to see if you are still within that time frame. If you are, you can switch to a new service provider and not face any early exit fees. Along with offering that ability to switch, NOW has also been keen to point out that these price changes are reflective of the investments it has made to improve its products and services. ‌ The service also says it has had to hike things due to the increasing cost pressures it continues to face across the board – such as wholesale cost and investment to improve its service. If you are with NOW, check your contract. Even if you aren't with NOW, it's always a good idea to shop around and see what offers are available. Along with checking out the main providers like BT, Virgin and Sky, there are plenty of smaller alternative networks popping up all over the UK that often offer faster speeds at lower prices. For example, Community Fibre is currently offering broadband for free with this deal lasting for three months.
