Chopra highlights Pakistan's weakness
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra provided a candid analysis of Pakistan's mental vulnerabilities in high-stakes situations.
"Pakistan's weakness is not a recent issue; it's a perennial problem. Of course, they are the defending champions in the Champions Trophy, but the truth is that they struggle under pressure. They lost to the USA in the last ICC event (the 2024 T20 World Cup) and failed to qualify for the second round," said Chopra.
The cricketer-turned-commentator further emphasised Pakistan's unpredictability as a major drawback heading into the tournament.
"They are inconsistent. Their graph fluctuates. They rarely maintain stability. In a way, they reflect their countryups and downs. The same inconsistency is seen in their cricket team," he stated.
Pakistan's volatility has long been a double-edged sword. While they have pulled off stunning victories, they have also suffered shocking defeats.
Chopra believes this inconsistency adds to their challenges.
"They are volatile and unpredictablePakistan's middle name is unpredictability. Imploding under pressure and inconsistency are major concerns. Can Pakistan overcome these issues? That remains the question, especially since they will be under immense pressure," he said.
Despite being the defending champions from the 2017 edition, Pakistan struggled in recent ICC events, failing to progress beyond the group stage in both the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence in Karachi on February 19, with defending champions Pakistan facing New Zealand in the tournament opener.
As part of their preparations, Pakistan Shaheens played a crucial warm-up match against Afghanistan, posting a formidable 314/8 and securing a dominant 144-run victory.
Skipper Shadab Khan led from the front with an impressive bowling performance, taking three wickets as Afghanistan was dismissed for 170.
The Shaheens will next face South Africa at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on February 17, while another squad will take on Bangladesh on the same day at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

With the next ICC Men's T20 World Cup on home soil just over a year away, Tharanga is pushing for urgent course correction. Tharanga admitted in an interview with Telecom Asia Sport ( "We've simply been too inconsistent with the bat," "We've tried different combinations, but it's time to bring in fresh blood. Sri Lanka's recent collapse in Dambulla, where they were bundled out for just 94 — their lowest T20 total at home — was followed by a limp 132 in the series decider in Colombo. It left fans stunned and exposed the chronic frailties in the middle order, especially under pressure. Tharanga, a former captain and World Cup winner, has overseen commendable progress in Tests and ODIs since taking over as chief selector. But in T20Is, he concedes the team is lagging. With India and Sri Lanka co-hosting the marquee event in 2026, he knows time is slipping. Fresh Faces, New Ideas Among the names knocking on the door are Nuwanidu Fernando and Pawan Rathnayake — two domestic standouts who may soon get their big break. Tharanga said They've earned their chances. We need energy, hunger, and composure — especially in the middle overs. One player already in the system who could be handed greater responsibility is Janith Liyanage. A consistent performer in ODIs at number six, Liyanage is now being assessed for a similar role in T20s. "He's not a power-hitter, but he reads the game well," said Tharanga. "He adds value as a fielder and a calm presence when things get tense." Bowling Balance and Selection Headaches With a deep pace pool at their disposal, Sri Lanka faces a different challenge: who to leave out. Only two frontline pacers are likely to be picked in the playing XI, making it tough for express bowlers like Matheesha Pathirana and Dushmantha Chameera to feature regularly. Tharanga hinted at a rotation policy to both preserve fitness and inject variety. "We have options, but balance is key. You can't pick everyone, so we need to be smart about who plays when." Perhaps the most glaring issue is Sri Lanka's lack of firepower with the bat. Unlike other top teams, the islanders still struggle to clear the boundary consistently. Tharanga said: "Even in 2014, when we won the title, we weren't reliant on brute force. It was about smart cricket - rotating strike, finding gaps, reading situations. That's missing now, especially in the middle overs. To address that void, Sri Lanka has brought in renowned English power-hitting coach Julian Wood on a short-term assignment. Wood, a former Hampshire batter, has worked with IPL franchises and international teams, focusing on improving strike rates and power output. "It's a good move," said Tharanga. "The boys must absorb as much as they can. T20 cricket is evolving, and we need to keep up." Road to 2026 Begins Now The run-up to the World Cup offers plenty of opportunities to rebuild. Sri Lanka will face England, Pakistan and Zimbabwe in upcoming series, with the Asia Cup looming and a potential home series against India on the cards next month. "Every series from here on is a platform to experiment, refine and commit to a core group," Tharanga said. "We're not far off - but it will take bold decisions, patience, and a bit of risk. We owe that to our fans."

Sajid Khan ruled out of England tour
LAHORE: Test off-spinner Sajid Khan has been ruled out of the Shaheens' tour of England after suffering a fracture to his right thumb during a training session at the Tonbridge School Ground in Kent. Pakistan Shaheens are set to take on the Professional County Club Select XI in the opening match of the three one-day matches, scheduled at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham. A PCB spokesman said that Sajid will return to Pakistan on the first available flight and will undergo further treatment at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. PBCC gets cricket stadium; Indian blind cricket team invited
LAHORE: Punjab Sports Department handed over the control of Asia's first designated Blind Cricket Stadium to Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) at an impressive ceremony held at Nishtar Park Sports Complex E-Library and Youth Centre on Monday. Provincial Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar was the chief guest on this occasion. Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Punjab Muzaffar Khan Sial, Director General Sports and Youth Affairs Punjab Khizar Afzaal Chaudhry, Director Admin Dr M Kaleem, Director Youth Affairs Syed Omair Hasan, Divisional Sports Officer Tanveer Abbas and members and officials of World Champion Pakistan Blind Cricket Team were also present on this occasion. Divisional Sports Officer Tanveer Abbas and PBCC Syed Sultan Shah singed the handing over documents at the ceremony. Addressing the ceremony, Provincial Minister for Sports Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar said that the Blind Cricket Stadium at Rakh Jhedu is a gift from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for Blind Cricket Team. 'Pakistan is the first country in Asia to build a dedicated cricket stadium for blind cricket team. I congratulated the National Blind cricket team on this great achievement,' he said, adding: 'There is no doubt that the National Blind cricket team has won several coveted world titles for the country'. Faisal Ayub Khokhar invited Indian blind cricket team to play competitive cricket against Pakistan team at this venue. 'We are quite upbeat that Pakistan team once again will beat India at the newly constructed stadium. There is no doubt that India had more resources than Pakistan but even then they don't have a single stadium dedicated for their national blind cricket team.' He further said that Punjab Sports Department has completed the construction of Blind Cricket stadium with full dedication for which I paid tribute to the entire team of Punjab Sports Department. 'Probably, today is the biggest day in the last one and half year'. Sharing more details, he announced that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz will inaugurate the International Squash Complex at Nishtar Park Sports Complex and first baseball ground of the province within two months' period. 'Punjab Sports Department is promoting true sports culture across the province in accordance with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz,' he said. Earlier, Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Punjab Muzaffar Khan Sial presented a welcome address stating that pedal tennis courts are being constructed in Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi. 'A state-of-the-art volleyball complex is also being constructed in Lahore, he said.' He further said that other special children will also be able to play at the newly constructed Blind Cricket Stadium.
