Liberia anti-corruption: President Boakai suspends top officials for non-declaration of assets
Among those suspended include the ministers for education and health, as well as the special envoys for tourism and investment.They also include officials working for the Executive Mansion, the official residence of the president, and county administrative officials.The law requires all public officers to declare their wealth before taking up their posts and when they leave positions in government.The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) published the list of all the 457 affected public officials, noting it was doing so as prescribed by law.Boakai, who pledged to fight corruption when he came into office last year, said failure to comply undermined efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability.Who is Liberian President Joseph Boakai?"Public officials are reminded that asset declaration is not only a legal obligation but also a fundamental measure to promote transparency and restore public trust in governmental institution," he said in a statement.Last July, the president announced that he was reducing his salary by 40%, saying he hoped to set a precedent for "responsible governance" and demonstrate "solidarity" with Liberians.The government of his predecessor, George Weah, had faced accusations of corruption and lavish spending, sparking mass protests amid a rise in the cost of living.On Wednesday, some of the suspended officials visited the anti-corruption commission offices in order to comply with the requirement.There has been mixed reaction over the president's move. Political analyst Abdullah Kiatamba was quoted by Liberian newspaper FrontPage Africa as being supportive of the president's anti-corruption stance, but raised concerns about the challenges some officials faced in submitting their asset declarations.Civil society group Solidarity and Trust for a New Day described Boakai's move as insufficient."Suspending these officials for just one month is a meaningless, symbolic gesture - a slap on the wrist that no serious person should take seriously," it said in a statement.

MP addresses rumours Anglesey hotels will be used to house asylum seekers
The MP for Ynys Mon has issued a statement after claims hotels on Anglesey are set to be used to house asylum seekers. This weekend a number of social media posts have been circulating in relation to the Cymyran Hotel, near RAF Valley on the west coast of Anglesey, and the Valley Hotel in Valley. The Cymyran Hotel has been on the market since 2023 with a sale to new owners currently going through. It has led to claims the Home Office is looking to use the site to house asylum seekers, although no evidence was provided to support this. The Home Office and Anglesey council have been contacted by North Wales Live over this claim. The owners selling the hotel have already posted online disputing the asylum seeker claim and have spoken to the MP over the future plans for the hotel. The Valley Hotel have issued a statement attacking the "fake news" in relation to another post saying they are due to house asylum seekers. They said: "We've been made aware about this post doing the rounds on Facebook. Can we make it perfectly clear before anyone else believes it and shares it across Facebook.. "We have not and will not be housing any asylum seekers in the Valley hotel. The hotel is pretty much fully booked most of the time with holiday makers, contractors, ferry customers, etc. "So before you share FAKE NEWS, just think what a detrimental impact it could have on a small family business like ours." Now Ynys Mon's Plaid Cymru MP has also released a statement. She said: "There have been a number of posts circulating online claiming that Cymyran Hotel and The Valley Hotel are being sold for use by the Home Office to house asylum seekers. The owners of Cymyran Hotel have confirmed it is being sold, and the new owners have plans to reopen it as a regular hotel with leisure facilities. My office is in contact with the new owners. "I have written to the Home Office to request formal confirmation that there is no truth to these rumours. "The Valley Hotel has already confirmed that the claims made about their business are entirely false. "Sharing unverified information online can do real harm to small, family-run businesses and risk fuelling tensions in our community. It's clear that rumours are being started by individuals who are not based on Ynys Môn and appear intent on causing division.

Donald Trump 'escapes' from prison in viral Glasgow mural
The artwork 'MAGA' in the Gorbals by artist Ashley Rawson was painted late last year behind the Brazen Head pub, but went viral when President Trump visited Scotland late last month. The mural featured the U.S flag painted in black and gold, incorporating into the stripes a barred window on the wall. Read More: A wooden painting of Mr Trump was affixed behind the bars, but in the wake of the work's popularity it has apparently been stolen. Mr Rawson told The Herald: "A guy messaged me on Facebook who is a [[Gorbals]] resident and said, 'he's not in his cell'. "He'd gone and taken a photo on Wednesday and he was still there then, so he must have gone missing some time between Wednesday evening and Saturday morning. "I had him really securely bolted in because I thought someone would just lift him if I didn't. "So someone's had to go to quite a lot of effort to get him out, it would have been easy to snap it or graffiti over him but to actually get it out from behind the bars you'd need steel clippers or something. "I'm a bit gutted, my son and I were walking in to town and went to take a look and it's totally gone, there's no sign of it - it's just been lifted. "I don't know if they've mistaken the value of it - it's not a Banksy, it's not worth anything! "It's probably more likely to be some students or something, but it's a shame. "The rest of the artwork is completely untouched, which seems a bit strange. "I was sort of worried someone might have seen it and gone along because they were angry about it - though I should say most of the comments have been really positive - and graffitied over it or something." Mr Rawson says: "I'd love to know if people would like to see him reinstated, in which case I'd go and get a bit of wood and re-do it but fix him in much more securely - so he can't escape! "I put a lot of effort into my art, I did this 'Christ on a Bike' thing down by the Clyde and people seemed to really like it but then someone just painted over it. "I did an Oasis one too a few weeks ago, a monobrow on a telephone box with an eye referencing the fact Oasis were discovered in King Tut's and someone has come up and basically destroyed it. "I only saw that last night as well, so Donald's been stolen and the Oasis thing has been damaged. But I suppose that's the difference between street art and canvas paintings - more people see it but it doesn't have the longevity." Mr Rawson is clear that if someone has stolen Mr Trump, he can be returned with no questions asked. You can contact the artist on his Facebook page or his Instagram page. As for the wider effect of his viral status, time will tell. Mr Rawson said: "Someone said to me the other day, 'you're not going to be able to go to America'. "The funny thing is, I'm very middle of the road, I just did a bit of slightly fun art. I'm not super left-leaning the way some of the comments make me out to be! It's quite funny. "Hopefully I'm not on a hit list, but I'll be looking out for vans with dark windows..."

It was one of four indictments leveled against the president-elect after he left office in 2021. Trump was charged with conspiracy to defraud the US, obstruction and conspiracy to obstruct, and conspiracy against rights. The case never made it to trial before the presidential election and was subsequently dropped following Trump's victory. However, Smith's findings were published just one week before Trump's inauguration, when he will be sworn in as the 47th president. Smith's report claimed Trump tried to retain power after losing to Biden by "using fraud and deceit." He also claimed Trump pressured election officials at the state level in a desperate bid to try and change the results. Trump was also said to have pressured then vice-president Mike Pence, who was President of the Senate, to change the election result, according to the report. Smith revealed that his team had "admissible evidence," which he believes would've helped them get a conviction against Trump - had he not won the 2024 election. "The department's view that the Constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a president is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the government's proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the office stands fully behind," the report said.
