Inside Sweida: The Syrian city ravaged by sectarian violence - where bodies line streets and homes are burned

Warning: This article contains details that some people may find disturbing.
We found the streets of Sweida city strewn with mutilated, burned and decomposing bodies as government security forces struggled to enforce the first day of a US-brokered ceasefire.
Large sections of the city seemed to be on fire as we entered the besieged, mainly Druze, city. There were multiple buildings, homes, flats, shops and businesses ravaged by flames.
We saw marauding groups of Arab tribal fighters breaking into homes and setting them alight. Others were spotted loading up vehicles with all sorts of goods.
One vehicle had a gaggle of geese on board. Others were stocked up with shrubbery. Yet more had mattresses, cupboards and fridges.
The new president sent his security forces down to the southern city to try to prevent yet more Arab tribal fighters from entering.
But early on in the day, we spotted large convoys of armed men pushing their way through the few checkpoints.
We did not see any government forces inside the centre while we were there, and they seemed to keep mainly to the outskirts.
Inside the centre, there were continuing fierce battles for most of the day, between Druze militia led by cleric Hikmat al Hajiri and the Arab fighters supporting their Bedouin brethren.
One Druze woman was shot by a sniper whilst she stood on her balcony.
Her face was covered in blood, but somehow she survived despite a bullet going straight through one side of her jaw and out the other. She had also been hit on her shoulder and one arm.
She was brought to a field hospital outside the city for treatment by Bedouin fighters. She said she had no idea which of the battling factions was responsible for shooting her.
Two humanitarian corridors are being created to allow the estimated 30,000 trapped civilians to exit.
A fleet of coaches with White Helmets flags flying has been sent to the perimeter of the city to prepare for civilians to come out.

The new president addressed the nation earlier in the day, urging calm and promising to stem the violence.
His words of reassurance and inclusivity for all ethnic groups in Syria are failing to persuade some of the minority Druze and Arab Bedouin groups to lay down their arms.
How the sectarian clashes are resolved is likely to determine how successful his presidency is, and tens of thousands of lives are dependent on him finding a solution quickly.
By early morning Sunday, the Syrian government said its forces had cleared the city of Arab tribal fighters, a development confirmed by several tribal leaders.
The challenge will now be ensuring any ceasefire holds.

Oil prices little changed as investors eye impact of new sanctions on Russia

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Oil prices barely budged on Monday as traders eyed the impact of new European sanctions on Russian oil supply, rising output from Middle East producers and concerns about fuel outlook as tariffs weighed on global economic growth. Brent crude futures rose 5 cents to $69.33 a barrel by 0040 GMT after settling 0.35% higher on Friday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $67.36 a barrel, up 2 cents, following a 0.30% gain in the previous session. The European Union approved on Friday the 18th package of sanctions against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, which also targeted India's Nayara Energy, an exporter of oil products refined from Russian crude. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Russia had built up a certain immunity to Western sanctions. Rosneft, Russia's biggest oil producer with a stake in Nayara, on Sunday criticised the sanctions as unjustified and illegal, saying the restrictions directly threatened India's energy security. Iran, another sanctioned oil producer, is due to hold nuclear talks in Istanbul with Britain, France and Germany on Friday, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday. That follows warnings by the three European countries that a failure to resume negotiations would lead to international sanctions being reimposed on Iran. In the U.S., the number of operating oil rigs fell by two to 422 last week, the lowest since September 2021, Baker Hughes said on Friday. Separately, U.S. tariffs on imports from the European Union are set to kick in on August 1, although U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Sunday he was confident the United States could secure a trade deal with the bloc. Pittsburgh man facing attempted homicide charge after allegedly beating 10-month-old boy

A man is accused of slamming a 10-month-old baby's head into a bedpost, injuring the child so badly that doctors had to remove part of his skull in an attempt to save his life. Police say the suspect is the boyfriend of the baby's mother. The man, Dominic Pinnick, is expected to be formally charged Sunday night, facing several charges, including criminal attempted homicide and three counts of aggravated assault. At last check, the baby was in critical condition, but Pinnick is accused of beating his girlfriend's 10-month-old so badly that, according to court documents, the baby is not expected to survive. A doctor told investigators that the baby's injuries were not consistent with a fall, but were consistent with abusive head trauma and violence. The baby has one large skull fracture and numerous retinal hemorrhages, which are consistent with violent shaking. The baby also appears to have multiple impact strikes to his chest and a possible arm fracture. On Friday, just after 4 p.m., Pittsburgh police responded to a house on Kedron Street in the city's Homewood neighborhood for a report of an "infant falling from a bed." The baby was rushed to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh "unresponsive, not breathing on his own and experiencing multiple seizures," officials say. A doctor also told investigators the baby had multiple knots and bruising. His head injuries caused a brain bleed and swelling. The baby went into surgery to remove part of his skull because of brain swelling. In a police interview, Pinnick told investigators he was asked by the baby's parent to watch the child. Pinnick said he heard crying and went upstairs to console the child. He said when he went into the bedroom, the baby was on the floor on the side of the bed and wouldn't stop crying. He got frustrated and walked around the bedroom, and hit the child's head approximately three or four times on the wooden canopy bed posts in the bedroom. Pinnick said he "aggressively placed the child on the bed, aggressively rocked the baby, and that he grabbed the child and aggressively rubbed the back of the baby's head." Pinnick said when he put the baby on the bed, he also "struck his head on the headboard." When he saw the baby's limp body, he called 911 for help. KDKA-TV reached out to Pittsburgh police for an update on the baby's condition, but has not heard back.
