Video game exclusives are dying as PlayStation plans new Xbox and Switch ports

Metro28-07-2025
As rumours claim Gears Of War: E-Day is coming to PS5, and Sony confirms more multiformat releases, the era of video game exclusives appears to be coming to an end.
For 40 years the primary selling point for video game consoles has been the exclusive games that they play host to. As Xbox has acknowledged, things changed during the previous generation, when digital downloads began to dominate and switching formats no longer became a trivial matter.
Nobody wants to leave behind their library of games on another console and while the PlayStation 4 still had plenty of high-profile exclusives, by the time the PlayStation 5 arrived fans were already locked into the PlayStation ecosystem.
Given the increasing cost of making games, exclusives must've begun to seem like an expensive and unnecessary indulgence to Sony execs. But now it seems they're taking things a step further, with plans to release more of their internally developed games on other formats.
One of the most frustrating aspects of Sony's change in approach is that they've never explained anything publicly. The above is all speculation and while it's almost certainly accurate, Sony has never acknowledged a change in plans or discussed why they've released so few exclusives in the second half of this generation – or why they're so obsessed with live service titles.
That too can easily be guessed at, but it seems their plans are shifting even further, with a recently discovered job ad asking for someone to 'play a critical leadership role in shaping and executing the global commercial strategy for PlayStation Studios software titles across all digital platforms beyond PlayStation hardware, including Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Nintendo, and mobile.'
As the ad puts it: 'This role is accountable for optimising title profitability, ensuring cross-functional alignment, and leading a high-performing team focused on multiplatform expansion, mid-range commercial planning, and platform partner management.'

Naturally, no examples are given but while it's still unlikely that recent PlayStation 5 exclusives will appear on other formats, other than the PC, Sony has recently ramped up its multiformat efforts with the release of former PSP exclusive Patapon on Nintendo Switch and the promise of Everybody's Golf to follow.
Clearly these are very low-profile franchises, but while they and last year's Lego Horizon Adventures purposefully skipped the Xbox, live service games Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox Series X/S next month.
There's no suggestion that this new role will mean God Of War or The Last Of Us turning up on Xbox overnight, or indeed ever, but the older some exclusives get the more likely it becomes, at least on Nintendo formats – which Sony has long insisted are not direct rivals.
For now, the newly advertised role is still likely to focus on older games and live service titles but even that would have been unthinkable even just five years ago, at the beginning of the generation.
As far as Nintendo is concerned, exclusives are their life blood and it is certainly impossible to imagine any of their games appearing on other formats, but for Sony exclusives are an increasingly minor consideration, that are no longer profitable enough when released on only one format.
This is a truth that Xbox has already realised, especially given how poor Xbox Series X/S hardware sales have been compared to the PlayStation 5. More Trending
Microsoft hasn't been very open about their plans either, but it already seems clear there's nothing that won't eventually be released on PlayStation 5. So it's no surprise to find that just as the Sony job ad appears there's rumours of Gears Of War: E-Day and State Of Decay 3 also coming to Sony's format.
Website MP1st has found résumés and job ads that seem to confirm both games being multiformat, although whether there'd be a short delay after the initial Xbox and PC release, as there was with Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, is unknown.
There were many ways to cope with the increasing cost of making triple-A games but, perhaps predictably, Microsoft and Sony have made no attempt to decrease budgets and have instead sought to increase their revenues by increasing the number of places their games can be bought and played.
That's not necessarily a bad thing but there's not yet any sign that Sony will start making more exclusives, whether they're multiformat or not. If that had been the case then most fans would likely welcome Sony's new approach with open arms.

Phasmophobia Grafton Farmhouse Rework is coming next week and new diner map teased for this year

The Phasmophobia Grafton Farmhouse Rework gets a release date and Kinetic Games unveils the new Nell's Diner map Though still in its early stages, Kinetic Games is diligently working on Phasmophobia to ensure a steady stream of new content, including a small map set to be released later this year. ‌ Kinetic Games has grand plans for Phasmophobia this year, with the game's PS5 and Xbox Series X |S release attracting a significant number of players eager for more content. Not to mention, there's a film adaptation in the pipeline, making it an opportune time to capitalise on the game's popularity. ‌ Thankfully, Kinetic Games is delivering on the promises made in the Phasmophobia 2025 roadmap, with the Bleasdale Farmhouse Rework and a revamp of the Journal and evidence gathering system as part of June's Chronicle Update, which was launched with a few minor issues that were promptly rectified. ‌ We also saw the game's first-ever Twitch Drops campaign, allowing players to earn two versions of the new ID Badge, and we have a new one to look forward to alongside the Phasmophobia Grafton Farmhouse Rework, which finally has a release date. The revamped map is set to be released on Tuesday, August 12, sometime between 1am PDT / 4am EDT / 10am BST and 5am PDT / 8am EDT / 1pm BST. While we don't have a specific time for the update, this is typically when Kinetic Games releases major updates (via SteamDB). For instance, the Chronicle update went live at 11am UTC, which is 4am PDT / 7am EDT / 12pm BST. Regarding the new small map, it's been unveiled as Nell's Diner, and as somebody who adores small Phasmophobia maps (plus the 1950s diner vibe), I'm absolutely buzzing to dive in once it launches. We haven't got a release date yet, with Kinetic stating it's "later this year". Kinetic Games director, and lead Phasmo developer, Daniel Knight, says:. ‌ "Nell's Diner, alongside the Farmhouse reworks, are all so central to our efforts in amplifying the horror in Phasmophobia, and I can't wait for our community to experience it for themselves. "Our incredible art team have worked tirelessly on the upcoming content, and the Diner map in particular is one of the most unique maps we've added yet. We don't want to spoil anything, but just know there are plenty of surprises to look forward to." There'll be 13 Unique Rooms (11 of which could be the ghost rooms), interactable objects, hidey holes, and plenty of looping spots. However, returning to the Phasmophobia Grafton Farmhouse Rework update – here's what's coming. ‌ Introducing All Out Gaming Introducing All Out Gaming, a dedicated gaming brand providing the best gaming news, reviews, previews, interviews and more! Phasmophobia Grafton Farmhouse Rework explained If you haven't yet explored Grafton Farmhouse in Phasmophobia, it's a wooden cabin featuring a straightforward layout, with largely roomy spaces throughout. That said, the genuine fright factor lies in the grimy, revolting bathrooms which I reckon we can't entirely pin on some paranormal presence. Sort yourselves out, folks. The Grafton Farmhouse Rework is set to bring about major changes, transforming this charming cabin into a run-down death trap. Anticipate "faulty electrics, caved-in ceilings and layers of dust" along with newly-themed rooms such as an "an eerie attic" and "harrowing seamstress room." 90s Amiga mascot is coming back with a sequel his original creator hates

In a surprisingly frank interview, the creator of James Pond slams the latest attempt at a sequel – as well as its developer. There were several attempts to create a mascot character for the Amiga, who could rival the likes of Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, back in the day. None of them succeeded, but the most fondly remembered of the lot is probably James Pond. They still couldn't compete with the best from Nintendo or Sega (none of them made our top 20 Amiga games list), but their graphics were definitely impressive for the time. The second game, 1991's James Pond 2 – Codename: RoboCod was the best and popular enough to keep getting ported, even securing a Nintendo Switch version in 2019. That we admit we've never heard of till now. Now, we've learned that no less than two new James Pond games are in the works, but only because the series creator, Chris Sorrell, has publicly slammed the new developer and distanced himself from the IP entirely. The two games in question – entitled James Pond: Rogue AI and James Pond: A Bit Of A Stretch – are being made for mobile devices and, according to developer Gameware Europe, are slated to launch later this year. If you've never heard of Gameware Europe, we don't blame you. Neither had we until now and a quick glance at its website shows that while it has a history of releasing mobile games, none of them are recognisable, with a good chunk of them being generic looking puzzle games. What's far more noticeable, though, is that Gameware Europe's website is filled with AI generated art and videos to promote their games. The art it uses for the two James Pond titles don't even feature the title character, just some bespectacled human children. A teaser trailer for James Pond: Rogue AI went up last month, and while there's no clear use of AI art in the game itself, it is only a teaser. Sorell has an unambiguously sour opinion of Gameware, telling Time Extension, 'I hate almost everything they do with a passion.' He also laments how he allowed the studio to attach his name to a 'shambolic' Kickstarter campaign for a new James Pond game back in 2013; one that failed to even raise a fifth of its goal: 'I stupidly allowed my name to become associated with their bottom-feeding enterprise.' Sorell does admit the aforementioned gameplay teaser looks like it could be fun, if it's 'in the hands of a capable level designer,' but that's where the positives end. 'Everything else they've shown seems far more expected: yet another warmed over rehash of a 34-year-old game that somehow makes it look like 30 years of tech progress never happened,' Sorell continues. More Trending 'And of course, the fact that they're promoting it with lazy, AI-generated bulls*** – well, what could be more on brand?!' Sorell thinks the James Pond name has become so 'degraded' that he doesn't want to be associated with it anymore, admitting he's been turning down James Pond related interviews for years. General fan reactions on YouTube aren't any better. Aside from the fact that there's only a small handful of comments, they're unanimously negative and judging by the date of their posting, have all been written after Sorell drew attention to the new game. 'I was a big fan of James Pond 2 and 3 growing [up], sad to see the series reduced to a lame cash in using crap generated AI assets,' reads one, while another bluntly drops this obvious pun: 'This is cod awful.'
