Bersatu man denies stoking racial, religious sentiments on TikTok
PETALING JAYA : Bersatu's Hulu Langat information chief Shafiq Abdul Halim has denied stoking racial and religious sentiments, following a RM10,000 fine imposed on him by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
In a statement posted on his Facebook page today, Shafiq criticised MCMC for sending four officials to his residence 'merely' to notify him of the fine.
'The presence of enforcement officials in numbers created the impression that my residence was being raided, causing worry among my neighbours.
'An MCMC official was also seen taking pictures for what he said was documentation purposes, without giving a clear explanation why,' he claimed.
Shafiq said the officials' presence could be seen as a form of intimidation to create fear.
'The officials also did not identify themselves or state their positions when asked, but only said they were messengers acting on higher orders.
'The compound notice letter given to me was not accompanied by a clear explanation as to the basis of the alleged offence,' he said.
MCMC said in a statement this evening that the fine was for posting offensive and extreme content involving racial and religious sentiments related to the KL Tower workers issue on TikTok on March 31.
The commission said it had received permission from the Attorney-General's Chambers to issue the fine, following investigations into Shafiq under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
Shafiq said in conducting their investigations, MCMC officials had asked him whether he had received orders from Bersatu's top leadership on the matter or received payment from any party.
'I strongly deny all of MCMC's accusations, given that I have already presented the relevant facts I referenced (in my post) to the investigating officials,' he said.
Shafiq said he had received legal advice on the matter and his lawyer was preparing an official response to MCMC's letter.

Tengku Zafrul: No evidence of smuggled US AI chips in Malaysia so far
KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has not found any evidence of incidents relating to the smuggling of high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) chips, said its minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. He said the ministry has been working closely with authorities such as the police, the Royal Malaysia Customs Department, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as well as industry players to investigate the matter. 'So far, we have not found any (evidence). We have spoken to the United States (US) and big players to cooperate and work with us. If there is any evidence, we will definitely take action. The investigation continues,' he told a press conference on MITI's report card for the second quarter of 2025. According to Tengku Zafrul, the demand for AI chips in Malaysia has been high due to its growing data centre industry. 'I think that has raised some red flags because Malaysia has started to be a dominant player in the industry,' he said. On Monday, MITI issued a new directive imposing immediate controls on the export, transhipment, and transit of high-performance AI chips of US origin within Malaysia, under Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010. Tengku Zafrul emphasised that the government is committed to a transparent and lawful trading environment for all partners and investors. 'We want to ensure there is a responsible trade, and we are currently reviewing the listing of AI chips under the Strategic Item List (SIL). 'We also want to make sure that we are in compliance with international standards and obligations, he said, adding that it is to avoid secondary sanctions for the sake of the nation's industry and economy. — Bernama

Loke: Anwar to settle top judiciary vacancies with Conference of Rulers' consent tomorrow

Loke said the matter was affirmed and relayed to all government backbenchers during a closed-door meeting with Anwar in Putrajaya yesterday. 'I mean, he has mentioned and briefed the Cabinet from time to time, but yesterday we were given an overall picture so that our backbenchers are also aware of what is going on.
