Davidovich Fokina upsets 12th seed at National Bank Open; Diallo last Canadian hope
TORONTO — Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain reached the round of 16 at the National Bank Open in Toronto with a straight-sets victory over Jakub Mensik of Czechia.
It was an upset of sorts as the 20th-seeded Davidovich Fokina ousted 12th seed Mensik 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round.
Montreal's Gabriel Diallo is the lone Canadian remaining in men's singles at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
He faces second seed Taylor Fritz of the United States in a later centre-court match.
Wild cards Nicolas Arsenault of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Vancouver's Justin Boulais face Sander Arends of the Netherlands and Argentina's Guido Andreozzi in a men's doubles first-round match scheduled for the afternoon.
A win by Arsenault and Boulais would set up an all-Canadian matchup with Leon Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., and Calgary's Cleeve Harper. The wild-card duo knocked off seventh-seeded Americans Evan King and Christian Harrison in the opening round.

Ethan Katzberg easily wins hammer throw title at Canadian championship
Ethan Katzberg, the reigning Olympic and world champion in men's hammer throw, added another title to his impressive resume with a first-place finish at the Canadian track and field championship in Ottawa on Saturday. Katzberg, of Nanaimo, B.C., won gold in Paris at the 2024 Summer Olympics and in Budapest at the 2023 World Championships. He threw for 81.33 metres in Ottawa to easily beat runner-up Jeremiah Nubbe (71.78) of the Kamloops Track and Field Club, and third-place finisher Rowan Hamilton (71.25) of Chilliwack, B.C. Katzberg set the Canadian record of 84.38 metres on April 20, 2024, and set the national championship record of 82.60 metres on June 26, 2024. Marco Arop, who lives in Edmonton, is the reigning world champion in the 800 metres, but it took everything he had to beat Justin O'Toole of Montreal to the finish line on Saturday. Arop clocked 1:45.44 — just 0.7 seconds ahead of O'Toole. Matti Erickson of Nelson, B.C., was third in 1:45.97. Maeliss Trapeau of the Ottawa Lions track club won the women's 800-metre final in 2:01.79, just beating Jazz Shukla (2:01.95) of Toronto to the finish line. Defending champion Alexei Popyrin advances to the National Bank Open quarterfinals
TORONTO (AP) — Defending champion Alexei Popyrin of Australia beat fifth-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals. Popyrin, seeded 18th, will face the winner of the late match between top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany and No. 14 Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina. Zverev, ranked third in the world, ended up the top seed with top-ranked Jannik Sinner — the 2023 winner — and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz skipping the hard-court event that ends Thursday.
