Lucknow cops crack trafficking syndicate

Time of India11-07-2025
Lucknow: In a major breakthrough, the Lucknow Police uncovered an inter-state human trafficking syndicate responsible for selling at least 15 minor girls for over Rs 20 lakh over the past three years across Rajasthan, Haryana and other states.
The victims, primarily from UP, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat, were lured with false promises and forcibly married to men—some significantly older or mentally unstable—in remote rural areas.
The breakthrough came after the south zone crime branch on July 10 arrested two key traffickers Santosh Sahu and his associate Manish Bhandari, who lured girls on the pretext of introducing them to controversial seer Premananda Maharaj.
During interrogation, the police found evidence of a deeper trafficking network led by Manish Bhandari, a middleman based outside the state.
The police said a minor girl from Ahmedabad was trafficked and married to one Banhi in Gangapur City, Rajasthan for ₹70,000. Another girl from UP was sold for ₹80,000 and forcibly married to one Jeetu in Kumawat colony, Beawar. A third victim, also a minor, was married to a tempo driver in Pali for ₹45,000.

She was sold for ₹50,000.
DCP, south zone, Nipun Agarwal told TOI, "This is not a case of four or five girls. We have traced at least 15 victims so far and more names are emerging." The police are coordinating with law enforcement agencies in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh to expose the entire trafficking ring.

No details were shared about the deal. The news was first shared by the accuser's lawyer, Tony Buzbee, and reported by TMZ, Sports Illustrated, and the New York Post. Until now, Shannon Sharpe had denied all claims, calling them a 'shakedown.' Both sides have now agreed on a private resolution. How Shannon Sharpe and Jane Doe reached settlement Shannon Sharpe (57, former NFL star and ESPN analyst) and Jane Doe (the woman who filed the suit) agreed to end their legal dispute. Jane Doe filed a $50 million lawsuit in April 2025 in Nevada, saying Shannon Sharpe sexually assaulted her twice, once in late 2024 and once in early 2025 after they met at a gym in Los Angeles in 2023. The lawsuit also described emotional abuse and threats. On July 18, 2025, lawyer Tony Buzbee posted on Instagram: 'After protracted and respectful negotiations, we have reached a mutually agreed upon resolution. All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily … the lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice'. That means the case is closed and cannot be filed again. Shannon Sharpe has denied wrongdoing. His legal team said the relationship was consensual and that Shannon Sharpe offered $10 million before the case was filed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? HC orders state to pay Rs 1.5L ex gratia to kin of 2 workers killed in 2013 landslide

1 2 3 Cuttack: Orissa high court has ordered the state govt to pay Rs 1.5 lakh each as ex gratia along with interest to the families of two labourers who died in a landslide in Nayagarh in 2013, quashing the district administration's decision to deny the relief. Justice Aditya Kumar Mohapatra, while delivering the judgments on July 10, ruled in favour of the families of Taleswar Jani and Krushna Chandra Mallik, who were killed while working on a road construction project in Sirikibadi village under Banigochha police station limits on July 17, 2013. Both were buried alive in a sudden landslide during heavy rainfall. However, the Nayagarh collector rejected their families' applications for compensation on June 17, 2022, citing that rainfall on the day of the landslide was below the "standard threshold" prescribed under the Odisha Relief Code. Calling the rejection "highly arbitrary and unreasonable", the court observed, "Having such a condition as a yardstick to grant compensation is irrational. The state, being a welfare state, must act fairly and reasonably. Viewed from a constitutional perspective, the rejection cannot be justified as being in public interest." The petitions were filed by Jani's wife, Surama Jani, and son, Jayram Jani, and Mallik's wife, Rasana Mallik, and daughter, Ranjita Mallik. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn How To Write Faster for Work (Find Out Now) Grammarly Learn More Undo The court held that the cause of death — a landslide — was undisputed, and that compensation under the relief code was applicable. "The impugned orders rejecting the claim of the petitioners are hereby quashed," the order stated. The state has been directed to pay Rs 1.5 lakh to each family, along with interest calculated from the date of their application. The amount must be paid within two months of receiving a certified copy of the judgment. In case of delay, an interest of 12% per annum will be levied until full payment is made. Legal experts said the ruling underscores the need for humane and rational application of disaster relief policies and may have wider implications for similar cases pending across the state.
