
D.C.-area airports add new flights, restaurants for peak summer travel
The big picture: Both Dulles International and Reagan National are expanding to accommodate more travelers, airlines and routes, and are upping their amenities to improve the airport experience.
By the numbers: More than 20 million people are expected to pass through the airports between May and August, with 11 million at Dulles alone (it has more than 60 nonstop international destinations).
Airlines like United are counting on a record-busy summer.
Memorial Day weekend flights at Dulles are up by 20% over last year.
Zoom in: United just launched three new international routes from Dulles: to Dakar, Senegal; Venice, Italy; and Nice, France — the first and only nonstop flight from D.C. to the French Riviera.
Other airlines like Frontier and Allegiant are also launching new routes from Dulles, while WestJet is resuming seasonal routes to Canada.
At Reagan, American Airlines is upping its summer routes.
Foodwise: Dulles just got a Ben's Chili Bowl, a Rappahannock Oyster Bar, and a spinoff of Navy Yard's upscale diner Gatsby.
What's next: Nearly a dozen new concessions will open at the two airports in the coming year. Dulles gets the bulk, including several local businesses:
2 Silos Brewing Co.: A spinoff of the Manassas brewery.
Clyde's: The beloved American tavern that started in Georgetown will serve burgers and more.
Aslin Beer Co.: A local brewery with a diverse menu.
The Market at Shenandoah: A retail marketplace for local products, adjoining a Starbucks.
Wanderlust: Offers local chocolates, specialty gifts and D.C. souvenirs.
DCA will bring in two local chains: Makers Union gastropub and Wiseguy Pizza.

China calls for the creation of a global AI organization
China wants to work with other countries and has laid out its plans for the global governance of artificial intelligence at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai. Li Qiang, the country's premier, warned about "technological monopolies" and said that AI could become "an exclusive game for a few countries and companies." As such, he proposed the creation of a "world AI cooperation organization" during the event. Li didn't specifically mention the United States when he talked about monopolies, but the US restricts AI chip exports to his country. NVIDIA had to develop chips that are only meant for China and conform to export rules so it wouldn't lose the Chinese market completely. Meanwhile, Chinese companies like Huawei are developing their own AI systems to make up for China's lack of access to more advanced AI chips from American firms. Li also made the statement a few days after the Trump administration revealed its AI Action Plan, which seeks to limit state regulation of AI companies and which aims to ensure that the US can beat China in the AI race. The Chinese premier said his country would "actively promote" the development of open source artificial intelligence and that China is "willing to provide more Chinese solutions to the international community" when it comes to AI. He also said that his country was eager to share AI technologies with developing countries in the global south. "Currently, overall global AI governance is still fragmented. Countries have great differences, particularly in terms of areas such as regulatory concepts [and] institutional rules," Li said. "We should strengthen coordination to form a global AI governance framework that has broad consensus as soon as possible."

Revealed: The true cost of Trump's tariffs on UK small businesses
A third of small UK businesses fear losing up to £20,000 this year amid the uncertainty caused by Donald Trump's new trade tariffs, a new report shows. Across April and May, the US President announced - and then called a pause for - levies being placed on all goods imported to the US from other nations, as part of a plan to readdress trade balances. While the UK has since arranged a trade deal with the nation, many other countries or blocs have not done so and there remains uncertainty within some industries. A new report looking at more than 500 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the UK has now revealed three in ten (30 per cent) estimate the cost of tariff knock-on effects to be between £10,000 and £20,000 this year, while two per cent believe it will cost them over £1m. Firms in the services sector are hardest hit, but across all sectors the average amount lost to tariff 'turbulence' is anticipated at £17,000 per business. One critical factor affecting those who import and export has been this year's volatile exchange rates, with £1 now equal to $1.358 - more than eight per cent higher than it was at the start of this year. Tariff business impact When the US President announced his tariffs, a stock market sell-off ensued - but it wasn't until bonds also sold off, sending yields (and therefore borrowing costs) higher, that he relented to a point. While those high-profile numbers were of course important, another key fluctuation came in the weakening of the dollar, which has lost ground all year. The US Dollar index measures the value of the currency against a mix of other global currencies, showcasing its faltering power in 2025. At the start of the year it stood at 108.49 on this index; it now stands at barely above 97, a deterioration of more than 10 per cent. If you are importing from the States, that is a positive - your pound buys more of US-based local goods, at least until sellers put prices up to account for the drop. For exporters, however, that is a big problem as it squeezes profit margins. A critical issue, particularly for smaller businesses, has been the rate of change and the lack of certainty about what is next. Responding to the survey undertaken by Critical Research, more than half (51 per cent) of businesses who export to the US said they expected a net decrease in volumes in future. Perhaps pointing to other geopolitical matters escalating, 47 per cent of all exporters - to the US or otherwise - said the same. New challenges Across all sectors, around 30 per cent of small and medium UK businesses export to the US. That figure is notably higher in retail and wholesale industries. They point to tariffs and customs regulations as the biggest issues facing them - as do importers, notably - ahead of such factors as inflation, global conflicts, costs of trading overseas and the impact of Brexit on their businesses. 'There's a lot of hidden activity - SME businesses are constantly dealing with change,' Jonathan Andrew, chief executive at Bibby Financial Services, told The Independent. 'Firms are making constant operational changes and even small businesses are having to assess how things impact on your own business. 'Doing nothing isn't an option - that's the reality of tariffs which is dawning now.' Many firms are opting to find new trade partners, the survey revealed, but they are now looking beyond the US in many cases - China was instead the most popular choice for both importers and exporters. Future As well as location, such global uncertainty means currency management is set to become a bigger factor for businesses too. 'SMEs are starting to pay more attention to foreign exchange. People have to think about revenue streams and where their income is from in currency terms, especially medium sized businesses,' Mr Andrew added. The UK's newly released industrial strategy said it is targeting 'long term stability' for businesses as a core focus. That will mean it will need to try and shield businesses working within those key industries from wider uncertainty, with recent trade deals - signed with the likes of India as well as the US - being one approach which can smooth the path for importers and exporters. But The Independent understands there are businesses now within the EU considering opening plants in the UK, as a potential easier route to exporting to the US. While that could yield an overall boost to potential economic growth, it could also heighten competition for those smaller domestic businesses already grappling with ever-changing conditions they are not always equipped to deal with. Would a weaker dollar be a good thing for the US?
The strength of the U.S. dollar influences trade, inflation and investment, but as President Trump noted Friday, the currency's power comes with trade-offs. 'I'm a person that likes a strong dollar, but a weak dollar makes you a hell of a lot more money,' Trump told reporters Friday. The president added that a strong dollar helps keep inflation in check and feels good psychologically, but argued, 'You can't sell anything.' His mixed messaging highlights tension policymakers have long grappled with: There isn't a simple connection between the strength of a country's currency and the strength of its economy. On one hand, a strong dollar makes imported goods cheaper for American consumers, but on the other, a weaker dollar makes U.S. products more competitive abroad, benefiting exporters. What does it mean when the dollar is strong vs. weak? The dollar is considered strong when it rises in value against other currencies, as measured by the exchange rate. If a dollar can buy more of another currency than before, that means it's getting stronger relative to that currency. Tourists notice this when traveling abroad and exchanging money. Earlier this year, the U.S. dollar and the euro were nearly at parity, or worth practically the same. Today, $1 is worth about 0.85 euros, meaning Americans visiting Italy will notice they get fewer euros in exchange for their dollars than just a few months ago. In that sense, the dollar has weakened relative to the euro. But the value of the U.S. dollar — and other currencies — is constantly changing due to supply and demand, shaped by factors like monetary policy, inflation and investor sentiment. The dollar has been weakening recently, falling more than 10 percent in the first half of the year when compared to a basket of currencies from major U.S. trading partners. The last time the dollar weakened this much at the start of the year was 1973, according to The New York Times. What are the advantages of a strong dollar? American tourists get more value for their money abroad when the dollar is strong, but you don't have to leave the country to experience the upside. One of the main benefits is that it lowers the cost of imports, making foreign products cheaper for consumers. But shoppers buying Mexican tequila and Canadian maple syrup aren't the only ones who come out ahead — a strong dollar also lowers input costs for businesses that rely on imports, easing inflationary pressures. A U.S. automaker importing parts from Mexico would pay fewer dollars for the same peso-priced components when the dollar strengthens against the peso. Lower input costs for U.S. companies put pressure on foreign competitors to cut prices to stay competitive, another potential win for American consumers. More broadly, as the world's primary reserve currency, a strong dollar projects global confidence and reinforces trust in the U.S. financial system. It's often seen as a sign of economic strength. 'When we have a strong dollar, one thing happens — it sounds good,' Trump told reporters Friday. What are the disadvantages of a strong dollar? A strong dollar can hurt American exporters because it makes U.S. goods more expensive in foreign markets. Boeing, for example, exports large numbers of aircraft globally, and when the U.S. dollar strengthens, those planes become more expensive to foreign buyers paying in other currencies. American firms that don't export can also feel the pinch, as they often compete with imports. A strong dollar can make it harder for Made-in-the-USA products to hold their own against cheaper goods from abroad. 'You can't sell tractors, you can't sell trucks, you can't sell anything,' Trump said of a strong dollar on Friday. 'It is good for inflation, that's about it.' While a strong dollar tends to ease U.S. inflationary pressures, it also intensifies inflation abroad — a dynamic that, in today's interconnected global economy, can ultimately be bad for business. Another point: A strong dollar raises the cost of visiting the U.S., which can dampen tourism. In the end, the strength of the dollar is a balancing act, with trade-offs that ripple across the global economy. Whether it helps or hurts depends on where you sit and what you're trying to sell.
