Cricket: Nathan Lyon not retiring but hands team song duties to Alex Carey
After being handed the song leadership from Mike Hussey, Lyon has led hearty renditions of Under the Southern Cross 67 times across more than a decade.
But the 37-year-old spin star said it was time for someone else to 'put their touch on it' and Carey was the man.
'I've been very honoured to firstly, lead the song, but to have it for 12 years, it's been one of the biggest highlights of my career,' Lyon said ahead of the second Test against the West Indies in Grenada.
'It definitely doesn't mean I'm retiring anytime soon.
'It's more about the team environment, making sure that I get the opportunity to pass it on to someone who I look at and absolutely love in the way he goes about it on and off the field and I just feel like Alex is the perfect candidate.
Nathan Lyon belts out the team song in Manchester in 2019. Picture:'I ran my race with it, and it's time for someone else to put their touch on it.
'I've loved having the privilege to lead the team song, but now I can sit back and hopefully enjoy a few wins and just relax and take it all in.'
Carey took over leading the song during the 2023 Ashes after Lyon strained his calf at Lord's but only got to sing it once after the Australians failed to win another Test in the series.
Lyon said he'd planned to pass on the role if Australia had won the World Test Championship final but chose the West Indies to tell Carey about the handover, which included reminding him of the legacy he was becoming a part of.
'I went up to his room the second night (of the first Test against West Indies),' Lyon explained.
'I wrote him a little hand(written) letter … and spoke to him about the reasons why I've come to the decision.
'He was pretty taken aback by it, but it was pretty cool little moment.'
Alex Carey is following in Lyon's footsteps. Picture:But while Lyon is taking one step back, he said there was no finish line in sight for his 138-Test career with one major mountain still to climb.
'I've always said I want to win away in India. I want to win away in England,' Lyon said.
'We've got that opportunity in a couple years' time, but we've also got to take it Test by Test and make sure that we're doing everything here … in the West Indies right.
'Then we've got a massive summer at home with the Ashes.
'But another World Test Championship final would be on my cards for sure.'

West Indies win T20 thriller, level Pakistan series
Jason Holder has taken four wickets and then smashed a boundary off the final ball of the game to lift West Indies to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Pakistan and level the three-match Twenty20 series. The veteran allrounder bowled an inspired spell to take 4-19 off four overs, as Pakistan struggled to 9-133 after winning the toss and batting first in Florida on Saturday. West Indies' reply also stumbled as Pakistan's spinners kept scoring difficult but late cameos by Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd kept West Indies just about in the contest before Holder's heroics off Shahid Shah Afridi's final delivery clinched it. It is the first West Indies T20 victory in seven matches, a span that includes a heavy 5-0 series defeat to Australia, on top of a 3-0 Test series sweep last month. "Been a tough couple of weeks for us," captain Shai Hope said. "We always try to get better, the guys have put in a lot of hard work. Hopefully today is the turnaround we are looking for." Earlier, Hasan Nawaz's 40 from 23 deliveries and captain Salman Agha's 38 from 33 led Pakistan from a precarious 4-53 in the 10th over, but 133 looked a vulnerable target at the innings break. Fresh from taking three wickets in Pakistan's 14-run win in the opening game at the same venue on Thursday, Mohammad Nawaz returned 3-14 from his four overs. When Roston Chase (16 off 19) was teased into a big shot by Saim Ayub, West Indies had sunk to 5-70 in the 14th over and looking at a steep mountain to climb. Motie got the innings moving with his quickfire 28 from 20 balls before Shepherd chipped in with 15 from 11, including taking 10 runs off Hasan Ali in the second-to-last over to give West Indies a glimpse. Needing eight runs from the final over, and three from the last delivery, Holder found the gap at backward square to score a boundary to end their T20 six-match losing streak. "We've had a fair bit of criticism which is warranted," player-of-the-match Holder said. "We haven't done justice to our potential. We can be a lot better, consistency has definitely plagued us."

‘Absolutely rattled': Bulldogs truth laid bare as Tigers come out firing in Galvin Bowl
Lachlan Galvin has come up against his old Tigers teammates for the first time on Sunday, with one goal: to get the win and return the Bulldogs to the top of the NRL ladder. But the grudge match quickly turned into a first-half ambush, with Benji Marshall's men taking a big 20-4 lead into halftime. After years of rebuilding, the Bulldogs have finally positioned themselves as genuine premiership contenders in 2025, or so we thought. Going into Sunday's grudge match, Canterbury was a perfect 12 from 12 against teams in the bottom 9, but they find themselves on the ropes. On Sunday, the Bulldogs had plenty of early ball after Terrell May dropped the ball off the kick off. But after failing to execute, the Tigers made them pay, running in four tries to one in the first half. And NRL great Cooper Cronk pointed out the Tigers have simply been better in the effort areas. 'The pressure, the intensity, the emotion the Tigers are playing with have the Dogs absolutely rattled,' Ennis said as Adam Doueihi extended the Tigers' lead to 20-0. ' … They are being run over.' Greg Alexander added: 'This is quite remarkable that a team 14th leads the team coming 3rd'. 'This is remarkable given how 2025 has gone.' The Tigers led 20-0 with just minutes to go in the first half before some Stephen Crichton magic put Jacob Preston through a hole to give them a sniff right on halftime. There is plenty of emotion in this, and the second half is sure to provide fireworks on what is a wet and windy Sunday afternoon. 2.50pm: Tigers teach Bulldogs a lesson in a first half masterclass Doueihi was the star of the first half. After being catapulted into the halves just an hour before kickoff, with Benji Marshall opting for the veteran over the youngster Latu Fainu, the rookie coach's move proved to be a masterstroke. Doueihi got the Tigers on the front foot, beating multiple defenders before finding Jahream Bula, who put Jeral Skelton over in the corner for the first points of the afternoon. The 26-year-old then raced away from deep in his own half before putting Bula over. Then Api Koroisau darted out of dummy half, before putting in a perfect grubber to Skelton in the corner. Doueihi then took advantage of a Matt Burton error to sprint away in an incredible length-of-the-field effort to make it 20-0. The Dogs got one back on the stroke of half-time, but it was the Adam Doueihi show in the first half. 2.20pm: Luai gives Galvin a piece of his mind Jarome Luai took his chance to gave it to Lachlan Galvin after the Bulldogs halfback reacted following a strong fend by the Tigers star. Galvin's over-reaction on the ground resulted in a penalty to the Tigers that got them some much-needed momentum.
