Japan's Nikkei Stock Average Treads Water as Central Bank Meetings, Tariff Deadline Loom
The Nikkei .N225 entered the midday break little changed at 40,682.14. Of the index's 225 components, 148 rose and 77 fell.
The broader Topix .TOPX rose 0.35%.
The Fed sets rates on Wednesday, and while policymakers are widely expected to stand pat, investors will be watching closely for signs that an interest rate cut may be on the way later this year.
Similarly, the BOJ is seen keeping policy steady on Thursday, but markets will search for clues on when the central bank is likely to resume rate hikes.
On Friday, most U.S. trade partners that have not agreed deals with Washington will receive higher tariff rates.
'There are still a lot of uncertainties over tariffs, and that's going to limit the upside for stocks,' said Maki Sawada, an equities strategist at Nomura Securities.
As a result, 'there's no particular sense of direction' in Japanese stock trading currently, she said.
Airline ANA Holdings 9202.T fell 3.8% to be the Nikkei's biggest percentage decliner following its earnings report after the market closed on Tuesday.
Earnings also weighed on chip-testing equipment maker Advantest 6857.T, which slipped 1.8%.
Sumitomo Pharma 4506.T surged nearly 16% to be the biggest percentage gainer.

Australia awards navy frigate contract to Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy
A mock model of the FFM "Upgraded Mogami" class is displayed during the Defense Security Equipment International (DSEI) Japan at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, east of Tokyo, Japan May 21, 2025. (REUTERS) SYDNEY--Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will deliver Australia's new A$10 billion ($6.5 billion) navy frigate program, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said on Tuesday. The frigate contract, expected to be signed by the end of the year, will be the biggest Australian defense purchase since the government agreed to build nuclear-powered submarines with the United States and Britain in 2023, and one of Japan's biggest defense export deals. 'It's going to be really important in terms of giving our navy the capability to project, and impactful projection is at the heart of the strategic challenge,' Marles said, adding it was 'a very significant moment in the bilateral relationship between Australia and Japan.' MHI's Mogami frigate was selected over German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' MEKO A-200 in a meeting of the government's national security committee on Monday. The upgraded Mogami-class frigate was capable of launching long-range missiles and had a range of up to 10,000 nautical miles, compared to Australia's current Anzac Class frigates, which had a range of around 6,000 nautical miles, Marles said. It also operated with a smaller crew than the Anzac class. The government said in 2024 it would spend up to A$10 billion for the general-purpose frigates to replace the Anzac Class. They will be equipped for undersea warfare and air defense to secure maritime trade routes and Australia's northern approaches. It says the first three general-purpose frigates will be built offshore, with the remainder built in Western Australia. The first frigate is expected to be delivered in 2029.

Japan's JOGMEC to Join Study for Gallium Production in Australia
News from Japan Economy Technology Aug 5, 2025 11:28 (JST) Tokyo, Aug. 5 (Jiji Press)--The Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, or JOGMEC, said Monday that it will take part in a joint study for gallium production in Australia in an effort to ensure a stable supply of the critical mineral used to make semiconductors. JOGMEC, a Japanese independent administrative agency, aims to diversify sources of gallium in order to reduce the country's reliance on imports from China. The agency and Japanese trading house Sojitz Corp. have established a joint venture in Western Australia, Japan Australia Gallium Associates Pty. Ltd., which will conduct a joint study with Alcoa Corp. to explore the feasibility of producing gallium at an alumina refinery there owned by the U.S. company. JAGA and Alcoa aim to complete the feasibility study by the end of fiscal 2025 and start gallium production in calendar 2026. According to JOGMEC, Japan imported about 97 tons of gallium out of the 167 tons that the country consumed in 2021. Of the total imports, 57 pct, or 55 tons, was sourced from China. Japan's gallium imports from China have been on the decline since Beijing tightened export controls on the mineral in 2023. [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's top tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa said Tuesday he is arranging to travel to the United States later in the day to discuss a bilateral tariff deal that was recently clinched. Although U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order said a so-called reciprocal tariff on Japanese goods will be set at 15 percent, effective Thursday, it remains unclear when the lowered auto tariff of 15 percent will be implemented.
