Unsatisfied staff could be costing you customers, says NTT

On average, only 59% of Europe's workforce agrees with the statement: 'Taking everything into account, I would say this is a great place to work,' according to the 2025 European Workforce Study report.
That figure does vary significantly from nation to nation, however. Countries like Denmark, Norway and Sweden rank at the top with 75%, 73% and 68% satisfaction, respectively. While Poland, Greece and Italy see satisfaction rates of just 47%, 44% and 43%.
The level of satisfaction of employees appears to correlate directly with productivity when measuring the GDP per hour worked of each country.
And while productivity already has a huge impact on a company and its profits, there could be a great knock-on effect for a business.
Euronews Business spoke to Laurent Millan, solution consulting manager for Customer Experience (CX) and Employee Experience (EX) at NTT, to discuss why the two sides are so closely linked.
Unhappy staff are bad for business
'If you capture a customer, it costs some money. But if a customer can switch rapidly away from your brands to another because they have a poor experience with you, then that's a waste of money,' Millan told Euronews.
Good customer service is intrinsically linked to well-trained and experienced staff.
'The biggest challenge for companies, for like two to three years now, is to have their employees have the right level of experience so they stay because it's a lot of money to onboard new employees,' he added.
Across Europe, LinkedIn data suggests there is a general trend for increased workforce mobility. Those entering the workforce now will have twice as many jobs in their career as those who joined the workforce 15 years ago.
A high turnover of staff is not only costly, but it also leads to reduced productivity, as it often takes a new employee several weeks or months to get up to speed in a role. The knock-on effects of this downstream on inefficiency or reduced productivity could be enough to lose a consumer.
'That's a lot of disruption when employees leave companies, for customers,' Millan added.
'CX drives loyalty for customers. So it's very interesting in terms of growth because that's a way that you can leverage to differentiate, to capture new customers'.
Agentic AI to improve customer and employee experience
Millan suggested simple things, such as ensuring seamless work-from-home capabilities and high-quality IT tools, can improve the employee experience.
Good work tools to allow for flexible working are vital for employee retention, as hybrid workers are least likely to look to leave their current role. In the European Workforce Study report, 50% of hybrid workers said they were 'Happy, where I am', whereas only 44% of onsite workers and 37% of remote workers selected this option.
Millan particularly highlighted agentic AI as a vital tool, as he believes it will create 'a new dimension for CX and for EX.'
'We think that agentic AI is not like a standalone thing that you do. Agentic AI should bring autonomy, so it's about building autonomous capabilities,' Millan explained, adding that 'it should bring reasoning capabilities, it should be bringing context. This is also where you create value.'
Millan was confident that agentic AI would bring a degree of flexibility necessary for the modern era.
'I've seen so many bots, agents, call it whatever you want, that have been developed very nicely but then cannot evolve. But businesses always have new requests, always have new stuff that they want to implement so it should be flexible.'

The European Commission has failed to ensure adequate public consultation in its scramble to approve projects to mine critical raw materials, according to four Green MEPs who claim the executive has rebuffed requests for information and that they are mulling legal action against the executive. The EU adopted a Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) last May, listing minerals such as lithium and cobalt essential for electric cars and other clean energy applications, as well as digital and weapons technology. The EU is attempting to reduce dependency on single suppliers for these - such as China and the US - with the implementation of 60 extraction projects: 47 in the EU soil and 13 outside the Union. China's leadership in raw material extraction and production offer fierce competition to EU ambitions for production of electric vehicles and clean tech products. MEPs Maria Ohisalo, Sara Matthieu, Majdouline Sbaï and Ana Miranda, sought information on mining projects they considered problematic 'Despite several requests by MEPs and NGOs we have not been given access or provided information about the assessments of selected or upcoming projects,' the MEPs told Euronews, adding: 'We believe that transparency in these matters is not only a legal obligation, but an integral part of institutional accountability." Monitoring group has become an 'empty shell', claims MEP 'While the European Parliament has observer status in the CRM board, relevant information on the choice of projects has not reached us,' the French MEP Majdouline Sbaï from Les Ecologistes told Euronews. The Critical Raw Material (CRM) board is a monitoring group (MG) within the European Parliament committee for international trade established to offer MEPs access to confidential Commission information regarding trade. 'Since the start of the mandate, at least in the CRM MG, but I would say in all the monitoring groups we followed, the Commission keeps repeating information that is already made public. These MGs have thus become empty shells,' Sbaï told Euronews. The four MEPs sent a letter to the Commission in early May, seen by Euronews, asking access to the impact assessments of the mining projects. In addition, they also requested the names of the independent experts who conducted the assessments to verify their impartiality, the exact geographical locations of the projects, and details on how the Commission plans to monitor their progress. The MEPs told Euronews they received a response later in May from Kerstin Jorna, the European Commission's Director-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, which they described as vague and evasive. Euronews reached the Commission for a comment without receiving a reply at the time of publication. The projects The six projects eyeballed by the MEPs are: the Mina Doade in Spain; the Barroso mining project in Portugal; the Sakatti project in Finland; another in the Allier region of France, and two outside the EU, in Serbia and New Caledonia. Recursos Minerales de Galicia initially had its 2018 mining project for the 'Alberta I' area rejected by regional authorities in 2020. In 2024, the company resubmitted the project under the name 'Mina Doade', and it has since been approved by the European Commission under the CRM. Another project approved by the Commission is located in protected marshlands in Viiankiaapa, Finland. The site forms part of the EU Natura 2000 network of sites designated for bird and biodiversity conservation. 'Mining does not belong to protected areas,' Finnish MEP Maria Ohisalo told Euronews, claiming that mining such an area 'destroys the very basis of nature conservation'. A €1 billion lithium project in France's Allier region, set to be the country's largest mining operation in decades, is sparking local controversy. Over five months of public debates, residents have raised concerns about water contamination, high energy use, and chemical risks. 'Fast-tracking extraction without pursuing strategies to moderate demand for raw materials and seeking consent of local communities is a recipe for disaster,' Belgian MEP Sara Matthieu told Euronews. Similar concerns were raised for a project in Serbia where a year ago, the Jada mining project was unblocked to become the EU's largest supplier of lithium, following strong local protests.

EU prepares heavy artillery for US in tariff war

The European Commission is preparing member states for the possibility of resorting to anti-coercion measures in the tariff dispute between the EU and the US, two diplomatic sources told Euronews. Commission representatives briefed member states on Wednesday about the progress of the negotiations with the US, presenting them with a fact sheet outlining the various steps of the decision-making process required to trigger this trade defence instrument, considered the nuclear option. The measures would enable the EU to restrict access to public procurement, licenses, or intellectual property rights for services from a third country. One of the sources said there seemed to be a broad qualified majority between the member states for deploying the anti-coercion instrument in the event of a no-deal scenario. 'Tonight's dinner between Macron and Merz will be decisive to get a qualified majority," the second source said. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will host French President Emmanuel Macron for talks over dinner in Berlin on Wednesday. According to the same source, the Commission is working on retaliatory measures targeting US digital and financial services if no deal is reached by 1 August. Both EU diplomats confirmed to Euronews that the Commission and the US administration were discussing a 15% baseline tariff on EU imports with some exemptions, but said that negotiations were far from over. Countermeasures The EU and the US have been negotiating for several months to resolve their trade dispute. The US currently imposes 50% tariffs on EU steel and aluminium, 25% on cars, and 10% on all other imports. Discussions appeared to be heading toward a baseline US tariff of 10% on EU imports. Strategic sectors such as automobiles and pharma, however, remained points of contention. But on 12 July, US President Donald Trump ramped up pressure on the EU by threatening to impose 30% tariffs as of 1 August if no agreement was reached. To counter the unilateral imposition of tariffs by the US, the EU is preparing countermeasures targeting two lists of US products. The Commission's spokesperson Olof Gill announced on Wednesday that the two lists would be merged, bringing the total value of retaliatory measures to €93 billion worth of US imports. One list has been suspended until 6 August, whilst a second still requires adoption by member states. 'While our priority is negotiations, we continue in parallel to prepare for all outcomes including potential additional countermeasures,' Gill said, adding: 'To make our countermeasures clearer, simpler, and stronger, we will merge lists one and two into a single list (not entering into effect until 07/08) and submit this to member states for approval.' EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič was due to have a call with his US counterpart Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on Wednesday afternoon, the Commission announced. 'Intensive technical and political level contact is ongoing,' Gill said. 'We need to change our negotiation method. We need to be able to retaliate and to put on the table any option that would change the balance of the negotiation,' French industry minister Marc Ferracci said in Berlin on Monday. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said back in April that the EU is ready to put pressure on the US by threatening to tariff its services, where it has a trade surplus with the EU, if negotiations in the ongoing trade war break down.
