Bath community creates panel for Grenfell Tower memorial quilt

BBC News10-03-2025
A community group has said it is "proud" to have contributed to a memorial quilt to remember those who lost their lives in Grenfell Tower.Students at Norland college in Bath, Somerset, and members of the public, have sewn a 12ft x 12ft panel which will be added to many other panels making up the quilt that will eventually measure the same dimensions as the tower in North Kensington, London. The quilt project is led by Tuesday Greenidge, whose daughter survived the 2017 fire in which 72 people died. She said she wanted it to "symbolise justice" for everyone affected.Norland sewing lecturer Kate Jaeger, who worked on the quilt, said the project showed the "healing power of creativity".
The Norland Sewing Bee, made up of students, sewing lecturers and members of the public, was launched at Bath Central Library in September 2023 and met every Friday for a year to complete the panel.Ms Jaeger said it had been a "great honour" and that the panel included images of hearts and stars, as well as hot air balloons, to symbolise the West Country. "They [the group] formed a lovely friendship and were so supportive of the project," Ms Jaeger added.
Jo Price, who is also a sewing lecturer at Norland, said: "It touched everyone and every city across the UK had people who were impacted."Working on this panel keeps their memory alive. It's keeping people questioning the architecture, and about how people live in the UK."I feel very proud to be a part of it."The panel will be on display at Bath Abbey until 27 March.

Rahaman Ali, boxer and brother of boxing legend Muhammad Ali dies at 82

The brother of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, Rahaman Ali, has died. The Muhammad Ali Center confirmed the passing of Rahaman Ali, who died on Friday, Aug. 1 at the age of 82. There was no cause of death mentioned in the news release. "You can't tell Muhammad's story without mentioning Rahaman," President and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center DeVone Holt said in a statement. "He was one of the most constant sources of support for Muhammad during this career and their relationship was a true example of what it means to be 'my brother's keeper.'" The Louisville Courier, part of the USA TODAY Network, mentioned that Rahaman Ali, whose birth name is Rudolph Arnett Clay, went into the hospital on July 19 and remained in hospice care at Norton Audubon in Louisville, Kentucky. Noted in the Muhammad Ali Center's news release, Rahaman Ali followed in his older brother's footsteps and had a professional boxing career of his own, which spanned from 1964 to 1972. At the time of his retirement, Rahaman Ali compiled a record of 14-3-1. "When you saw people walk through the door and they saw Rahaman you would see their eyes light up almost as if they had already seen Muhammad himself," Holt told WDRB, a local Fox affiliate in Louisville, Kentucky, about Rahaman Ali and his presence at the Muhammad Ali Center. MLB Speedway Classic was a Fyre Fest-like fail even before the rain

The Major League Baseball Speedway Classic came to an anti-climatic end Saturday evening after heavy rain turned the field into mush and forced the Cincinnati Reds versus Atlanta Braves game to be suspended after one inning. But according to different fan accounts on social media, the event was a giant mess even without the rain. From bun-less hot dogs to cheese-less nachos, Bristol Speedway was more akin to the Jones residence from the classic 1995 movie Friday than it was to a ballgame. "Y'all ain't never got two things that match!" One apparent attendee provided photos of the awful concession food on X, saying the game was "the MLB version of Fyre fest." Yikes. Seriously?? Who thought that was a good idea? And to make it worse, the speedway charged full price for the part-time food, according to the same fan. Other attendees also shared their bad experiences on social media, which ranged from the food completely running out to problems with parking. But hey, at least they get to try it again when the game resumes Sunday afternoon. The Lakers' full 2025-26 preseason schedule has been revealed

It may be the middle of the summer, but before we know it, it will be time for NBA teams to report to training camp and start the new season. About two months ago, the Los Angeles Lakers announced their preseason schedule for the upcoming season. They will have games at Arena versus the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, as well as a contest at Acrisure Arena in greater Palm Springs against the Phoenix Suns and one in Las Vegas against the Dallas Mavericks. Their full preseason schedule has now been revealed, per Khobi Price of Southern California News Group. The Lakers will also play a road game on Oct. 5 versus the Warriors and another one against the Suns on Oct. 14. One thing to note is that the Lakers will have a set of back-to-back games on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, as well as a total of four games in six games to close out their exhibition schedule. It will therefore be interesting to see how much the team's veterans, especially LeBron James, will play during that stretch.
