Young Oldham filmmaker produces short film based on his childhood in care starring Corrie actor

ITV Granada's Entertainment Correspondent talks to new filmmaker Saleem Miah about his film 'Spice for Life'
A young filmmaker from Oldham has produced his very first short film starring a Coronation Street actor.
Saleem Miah's film 'Spice for life' is based it on his own experience of growing up in the foster care system.
His film, which is shot entirely in the North West, stars Coronation street actor Adam Hussain and Hollyoaks actress Kirsty-Leigh Porter.
The film is about a care worker who fails to bond with her foster son until they connect over cooking.
Saleem wrote, produced and directed the film which is being screened as part of Manchester Metropolitan University's 2025 Filmmaking cohort.
Saleem said: "I grew up in foster care myself, I moved about quite a lot. I grew up in Oldham, and I was placed with a lot of white families, which I think is quite like a unique, interesting. upbringing.
"I've always wanted to make a film about it. The story it's fictional, but a lot of the scenes in it I have kind of got from my own life, really.
"But I've been really lucky in the sense that I've met people along the way that have supported me."
He added: "I feel like people have assumptions, don't they, and they sort of assume that kids and care face, you're not very smart or, like, you're a troublemaker, you're not ambitious.
"I've always wanted to be an example of someone that doesn't sort of fit those stereotypes and it just proving that we can be just as good as anyone else at something and we can live through it like really good lives."
Saleem is a third year Filmmaking student from Manchester and is also a recipient of the RTS Beryl Vertue Scholarship, supported by Hartswood Films bosses Sue and Debbie Vertue, who mentor him.
He began his journey into the industry through a local BFI talent development scheme, going on to gain a place on the NFTS Film Academy.
The young filmaker is keen to dedicate his career to getting underrepresented voices on screen.

Coronation Street star addresses what happened to Gary and attack culprit

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon has revealed all on Maria Connor's reaction to finding out the truth about Gary Windass' (Mikey North) disappearance. Gary disappeared without a trace following a row with Maria, who wasn't pleased about his growing connection with relatively new neighbour Lou Michaelis (Farrell Hegarty). When he didn't return home, Maria reckoned that it was simply due to their falling out. 'She's really upset that he's gone but it's not until he's been gone too long that she realises something is really wrong and is even more worried,' admitted series star Samia. 'Her emotions turn from being upset about the fact that they've fallen out to being worried about his safety.' Samia credits Gary missing Liam's (Charlie Wrenshall) birthday as the catalyst in her on-screen alter-ego realising that something is afoot. 'She was obviously worried before where he was because he had been gone a long time and was ignoring her messages and phone calls and thought they would have sorted it out long before that,' said the actress, 'but as soon as he misses Liam's birthday she absolutely has a gut feeling that something isn't right and thinks something awful might have happened to him.' Gary, as audiences know, was seen in the hospital in recent scenes. He's in a coma and fighting for his life. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? In upcoming scenes, we'll see Maria reporting Gary as a missing person to Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), who then learns about an unidentified patient. He's sure that it isn't Gary, but it becomes clear that his attacker is going to extreme lengths to conceal their crime and cover their tracks. They're even pretending to be his next of kin. Samia added: 'It's bittersweet for Maria [when she learns Gary isn't the coma patient] because she's of course glad Gary isn't in a coma, although little does she know he actually is, but at the same time she's worried even more now because her fear is he could be in a worse condition or even dead.' More Trending The actress said that, when Maria does find out that Gary is the coma patient, her mind is 'spiralling'. 'But she doesn't stop for a second to think who actually attacked him and put him in a coma, she's aware Gary has got a lot of enemies from over the years who could have potentially wanted to take revenge on him.' ITV announces huge change to how fans can watch Emmerdale and Coronation Street

From the beginning of next week, soap fans will be able to watch Emmerdale and Coronation Street via a whole new service - leaving many fans rejoicing at the news Soap fans were both excited and confused when ITV announced a major change to their weekly output. For decades, fans have tuned in to watch new episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street on the channel when they air on week day evenings. But as of Monday 30 June, fans will be able to watch new episodes from the beginning of the day as they will be available to view online hours before they transmit via traditional transmission avenues. Taking to social media on Sunday, social media channels connected to the soaps shared exciting news with fan. ‌ The update revealed that new episodes will be available to watch via YouTube for the first time. The official Coronation Street Instagram page announced: "Soap fans, rejoice! ‌ "Starting tomorrow, full episodes will be available on YouTube from 7am — the same day they air on TV!" The update included an image showing Emmerdale and Corrie characters posing beneath logos of their respective soaps. The update thus caused some confusion - as some fans thought that the cast of the soaps were being merged. One follower remarked: "I literally thought Debbie was joining Emmerdale for a moment there!" And others were excited to learn that they would be able to watch their favourite soaps via a new format - as many complained the ITV app is nigh on unusable. One hopeful soap fan commented: "Nice I hate itvx with their [user interface] and 27 ads a ep." And another commented: "This is awesome news! Yayyy!" In recent months, ITV has announced a number of changes regarding the way Corrie and Emmerdale will be broadcast. In February it was revealed the schedule would be changed from the beginning of next year. ‌ A statement from the broadcaster explained: "From January 2026, Coronation Street and Emmerdale will move to a new scheduling pattern on ITV1, introducing a soaps power hour from Monday-Friday, with 30 minute Emmerdale episodes at 8pm, and 30 minute Coronation Street episodes at 8.30pm. Episodes will continue to drop at 7am on ITVX, before transmission that evening." ITV's Managing Director of Media and Entertainment Kevin Lygo said at the time:'The new commissioning pattern is viewer-led. We already give more choice than ever to viewers on how they watch us through ITVX and we want to present their favourite soap to them, in the most digestible way. ‌ 'In a world where there is so much competition for viewers' time and attention, and viewing habits continue to change, we believe this is the right amount of episodes that fans can fit into their viewing schedule, to keep up to date with the shows. 'Research insights also show us that soap viewers are increasingly looking to the soaps for their pacey storytelling. Streaming-friendly, 30 minute episodes better provide the opportunity to meet viewer expectations for storyline pace, pay-off and resolution. 'Whilst viewing is growing on ITVX, we know a significant proportion of our soaps' audience still watch us via the schedule. This new pattern is in the DNA of the soap genre - nobody else does 30 minute drama this successfully. It creates a soap power hour that's consistent, and easy to find in the linear schedule, for the UK's biggest soaps. 'This new commissioning pattern will mean five hours of soaps a week, rather than the current six. We are conscious this will have an impact for the people who work on the soaps team. We will support our colleagues in ITV Studios as they work through these changes, and will do what we can to mitigate the impact on our people. 'These changes are motivated by doing what we believe is best for the continuing success of these important programmes in the long term. They also create headroom in the overall programme budget for investment in programming that can help ITV grow reach in a very very competitive market.'

Helen Flanagan looks incredible as she lounges on blanket in her lingerie after split from boyfriend

HELEN Flanagan looked as hot as the weather as she stripped off to sexy lingerie for a stunning new shoot. The 34-year-old laid on her back in the risque floral set with a yellow trim and gave the camera a sultry stare. 5 Another shot saw her basking in the sun's rays in a see-through set, while in a third picture her Marilyn Monroe arm tattoo was visible as she lounged on the lawn. The fourth and final shot saw Helen back inside modelling more Nikki Intimates stockings and suspenders. Helen captioned her post: "Still totally obsessed with my collection with @nikkiintimates. Love how feminine, confident and gorgeous these sets make me feel. Hope you're all loving them as much as I do!" One follower commented: "Absolutely incredible Helen." Another said: "Looks like your confidence has returned." A third posted: "What can possibly be said apart from WOW." Though she's inundated with compliments and looks catalogue perfect, Helen recently opened up about her lack of confidence. 'My weight all kind of depends on my love life and how stressed I am,' the former Coronation Street star said. She continued: 'Even though sometimes you don't feel so confident or toned, just go for it. 'Even though I've got cellulite and my body isn't as toned as it used to be, I just thought 'you know what Helen go for it,' you only live once.' Helen Flanagan claps back at mum-shamers after being slammed as 'embarrassing' - but is now accused of 'shaming herself' Mum-of-three Helen recently jetted to Ibiza with pals to enjoy a day of partying at Wayne Lineker 's famed O Beach club. She looked happy despite her recent split from boyfriend, Robbie Talbot, 45. A source said of their separation: 'They want different things in life. She has just landed a new acting job and is trying to juggle work projects with the kids. "She sat him down two weeks ago and said, 'This isn't working'. It was a grown-up chat. 'She just wants to be on her own for a while although she still has feelings for him.' 5
