BBC News10-03-2025
A 97-year-old Bongo's Bingo fan who took to the stage at the club night's anniversary show has said she felt "a bit like a celebrity".Anne Gandy from Walton, Liverpool, said she had always loved to "boogie" and the events, which are famous for dance-offs and rave intervals during the bingo, gave her an opportunity to revisit her inner dancing queen. Her family shared a video of her dancing on stage at the club night's 10th anniversary show on SaturdayThe great-grandmother said she "had a ball" at the special Bongo's event.
Mrs Gandy said: "I've always loved to have a boogie from going to dance halls when I was younger to being the first and last off the dance floor at parties."It always has a lovely atmosphere. I do usually get up and have a boogie with the lads."I even got on stage with Boyzlife when they performed at Bongo's."The great-grandmother said she felt "a bit like a celebrity" after people recognised her from previous shows."I had a few people come up to me on Saturday saying they were at the show I went to for my 90th birthday," she said.
Mrs Gandy, who only retired from her job at a nursery last year was awarded an MBE in 2007 for her work in the community."Some mums from the playschool I used to run also came and had a dance with me at the show," she said.Mrs Gandy attended on Saturday with four generations of her family, including her 20-year-old great-grandson.She was first introduced to the not-so-quiet bingo hall by her granddaughter Sarah."Everyone I tell thinks she's a legend," Sarah said."It was a really good night, loved seeing the Cheeky Girls, N-trance and Blue - but gutted we didn't win anything."
She said her grandmother "always loved bingo and getting up and having a dance so there was no surprise that she loved an event that combined the both".Mrs Gandy's daughter Donna said she was still "getting out and having fun at 97"."It was fab as usual, makes me forget I'm getting old," she said.Bongo's Bingo describes itself as an "immersive, inclusive and incredible" place where "everyone parties together" with "no barriers and no limits".The clubnight was started by Jonny Lacey and Joshua Burke in Liverpool in 2015 and has since held events across the world including in France, Holland, Ibiza, Dubai and Australia.Mr Lacey said seeing Mrs Gandy "always brings a smile" to his face. "What an inspiration at 97 years young. She always gives it her all in the rave round too and puts some of the younger players to shame," he said."I'd love to see more players like Anne joining us in the future."

Myleene Klass puts on a very leggy display in summer minidress as she leaves the Smooth Radio studios

Myleene Klass put on a very leggy display in a black and beige summer minidress as she left the Smooth Radio studios on Thursday. The radio presenter, 47, looked incredible in a palm print jersey dress which featured a v-neckline and flared skirt. She paired her elegant summery ensemble with a pair of white socks and white Sketchers trainers. To accessorise, Myleene added to her look with a stylish pair of black tinted sunglasses. Adding a hint of glamour, she toted around her belongings in a tan Chanel bag and finished her outfit with a myriad of gold jewellery. Myleene recently celebrated her MBE honour with a lavish royal-themed party where she was joined by family and celeb pals. The star was honoured for her services to women's health, miscarriage awareness and charity at an investiture ceremony on Wednesday. Myleene shared a clip on Instagram showing the highlights from the afterparty - although the number one star appeared to be her son Apollo, five, who supported her throughout the event. The star couldn't look prouder of her achievement, as she was captured partying it all up with pals, including the likes of Christine Lampard, Nicole and Natalie Appleton. The stunning two-tier cake was made with a crown on top, while royal-themed photo props were spread about the room as Myleene recorded herself having fun. Cherishing her achievement, the TV star wrote a lengthy caption alongside the video: 'It takes a village… I didn't do it alone. Thank you my fam, I love you all so much.' She continued: 'A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.' Greek proverb 'We are Mamas. We do this for our babies so they'll know we are forever watching over, loving and protecting them. She concluded emotionally: 'The change in these Miscarriage and Women's health laws/models of care came too late for me and the majority of my friends and colleagues, but our children will, through our relentless work, hopefully know less heartache.' Myleene looked typically chic in an all-white suit including fitting trousers and blazer - while showing off her new pin proudly. Her little man Apollo, whom she shares with her fiancé Simon Motson, looked cute in a navy suit and tie. After being presented with the medal by King Charles at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, Myleene took to her Instagram to mark her achievement in a very racy way. She stripped down to pose in her lavish clawfoot tub, wearing nothing but a sparkling tiara on her head - in a mirror image of Princess Margaret's iconic bath snap. The younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II was famously photographed by her then-husband Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1962, wearing the dazzling Poltimore tiara while soaking in the tub. Following Wednesday's investiture ceremony, she took to her Instagram to admit she was 'utterly overjoyed and humbled' to receive the honour. The former Hear'Say star was joined by her fiancé Simon Motson, son Apollo, and her two daughters, Ava, 17, and Hero, 13, who she shares with ex-husband Graham Quinn. Myleene has campaigned for paid bereavement leave to be extended to those who experience a miscarriage. The mother-of-three suffered four miscarriages and has spoken openly about the psychological effects of baby loss on women. She is an ambassador for the pregnancy and baby charity Tommy's and fronted the Bafta-nominated documentary Myleene Klass: Miscarriage And Me in 2021, in which she met women around the UK to hear their experiences. Sharing a slew of photos from Windsor Castle, Myleene wrote: 'Having my family there and our rainbow baby boy was extra magical in what has at times been a very dark journey for us all.' While she concluded her post: 'Before this and my (bafta nominated) documentary Myleene Klass: Miscarriage and Me, it did feel like no one really mentioned the dark secret of Miscarriage, the shame, the taboo, now, it's said loudly in the walls of the Palace and around Westminster.

Stewartry Agricultural Show set to be memorable for the Corrie family

President David Corrie will be joined by no fewer than seven other members of his family at the showfield on Saturday. It's set to be a special Stewartry Agricultural Show for the Corrie family. ‌ Not only is David Corrie president – but no fewer than seven other members of his family will join him on the showfield. ‌ As well as wife Susan and children Fraser – 10 – and Lucy, eight, also there will be sisters Tanya and Claire and parents John and Sandra. ‌ John's father, Jack, showed Galloways in the early years and was elected president in 1965. Sadly, he died suddenly that night aged 56. Sixty years later David, who is head of estate agency at Galbraith, is the president. His aunt – John's sister – Myrna was show secretary for many years and received an MBE from the Queen for her services to farming. John was president of the Belted Galloway Society for three years and has had many a champion at the show, including Park That's Life (who appeared on the program of the same name) and more recently Park Persius. He was made an honorary life president last year. He will turn 90 on Tuesday and next month he and Sandra will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary. ‌ They have recently become great grandparents to Kit Graham Rogers, named after Tanya's husband who coincidentally died suddenly last year aged 56. A silver cup was first presented at the show in Tanya's name in the early 70s for the best donkey and is still in circulation. Claire lives in Virginia, USA and has made the trip for the celebrations and the show as she has always been the keenest farmer of the family. ‌ Thousands of people – including the Corries – are expected at Greenlaw on Saturday to see the best livestock that the region has to offer. Entries overall are up on last year, with a ride range of cattle, sheep, horses and goats on display. ‌ There will also be a dog show, which can be entered on the day, as can the popular showjumping competition. The main ring entertainment this year is Longton Sheepdogs – who will be bringing along some ducks to be rounded-up. Circus acts will be wandering the showfield to entertain the crowd and there will also be a kids sports day to delight youngsters. The grand parade of livestock to determine the champion of champions will be at 2pm. There will also be arts, crafts and food stalls, shopping and trade stands, homecrafts and floral art. There is parking on the site, with a shuttle bus running from Market Hill in Castle Douglas to Greenlaw and back throughout the day.

MasterChef series filmed last year to be broadcast in August, BBC confirms

A decision on airing the celebrity series and Christmas special has not been decided, with plans to be confirmed later in the year, the BBC said. Both presenters will still feature in the upcoming series, but the edit will be looked at in light of the findings of an investigation, with focus being given to the contestants, the PA news agency understands. A BBC spokesperson said: 'After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 6 August. 'MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey. John Torode began presenting MasterChef alongside Gregg Wallace in 2005 (BBC/Shine TV) 'This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. 'In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. 'We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC. 'However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. 'We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series. 'At this stage we have not taken a decision on the celebrity series and Christmas special, which was filmed earlier this year, and we will confirm our plans later in the year. 'Most importantly MasterChef is a brilliant, much-loved programme which is bigger than any one individual. 'There are many talented, dedicated and hard-working people who make the show what it is. It will continue to flourish on the BBC and we look forward to it returning stronger than ever in the future.' The statement followed news last week that Torode's contract on MasterChef would not be renewed, as confirmed by the BBC and production company Banijay UK. Torode, who celebrated his 60th birthday on Wednesday, confirmed he was the subject of an allegation about using racist language that was upheld as part of a review carried out by law firm Lewis Silkin into the alleged behaviour of his co-presenter Wallace. Torode said he had 'no recollection of the incident' and was 'shocked and saddened' by the allegation. In November 2024, Banijay UK, announced Wallace would step away from his role on the BBC cooking show while historical allegations of misconduct were investigated. Wallace issued an apology saying he was 'deeply sorry for any distress caused' and that he 'never set out to harm or humiliate' in the wake of the Lewis Silkin review that saw 45 out of 83 allegations made against him upheld. John Torode after being made an MBE during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace, London in 2023 (Kirsty O'Connor/PA) It concluded that the 'majority of the substantiated allegations against Mr Wallace related to inappropriate sexual language and humour', adding that 'a smaller number of allegations of other inappropriate language and being in a state of undress were also substantiated', with 'one incident of unwelcome physical contact' also substantiated. BBC director-general Tim Davie presented the corporation's 2024/2025 annual report last week and insisted MasterChef does have a future with the broadcaster beyond 2028, when its current deal runs out. 'I absolutely think it does (have a future), I think a great programme that's loved by audiences is much bigger than individuals', he said. 'It absolutely can survive and prosper, but we've got to make sure we're in the right place in terms of the culture of the show.' Torode began presenting the BBC cooking contest alongside Wallace in 2005. The duo celebrated the show's 20th anniversary in 2024 with a special dinner at Fishmongers' Hall in London with the semi-finalists of MasterChef series 20 delivering a three-course feast to food critics and top chefs.
