Stellantis to cut up to 500 jobs at Italy's Melfi plant
This follows a recent announcement for a similar voluntary redundancy plan for a total of 350 jobs at two other facilities in Italy, in Pomigliano and Pratola Serra.
'It seems that a real plan to divest from Italy is taking shape. For these reasons, Fiom-Cgil has not signed the layoffs,' said Samuele Lodi of Fiom-Cgil.
Stellantis, which owns Italian brands Fiat and Alfa Romeo, was not immediately available for comment.
The group in December presented a plan to the Italian government to revitalise its output in the country, after years of falling production.
As part of the plan, new models have been assigned for production to Stellantis Italian plants in 2025 and in coming years, but their expected positive impact on output and jobs will not materialise before the end of this year.
In Melfi, Stellantis is ramping up production of Jeep and DS models this year, while further models, including under the Lancia brand, are expected in coming years.

Hamilton holds hands up after 'unacceptable' qualifying
Lewis Hamilton blamed himself and said he would apologise to Ferrari for an "unacceptable" performance on Saturday after he suffered another qualifying flop, his second in two days, at the Belgian Grand Prix. The 40-year-old seven-time world champion, who was eliminated in first sprint qualifying on Friday when he spun at the chicane, repeated his disappointment as he qualified in a forlorn 16th place for Sunday's race. Team-mate Charles Leclerc qualified third after Hamilton had exceeded track limits in Q1 and had his best lap deleted. "It was the same today as it was for the rest of the weekend," said Hamilton. "We made some changes and the car didn't feel terrible. "It was tough for us. We had to put on our set of tyres just to try to get through Q1 so it's not great. "From my side, I made a mistake so I've got to look internally and I've got to apologise to my team because that is just unacceptable to be out in both Q1s. It's a very poor performance from myself. "I will start from where I am and see what I can do to achieve the best I can with what we have. This season has been a tricky one." Hamilton has won the Belgian race five times including inheriting victory last year when his then-Mercedes team-mate George Russell was disqualified after winning in an underweight car. Leclerc was upbeat and surprised to be third on the grid. "I'm very happy today and it's strange to say that because it's still three-tenths and it's only third place, but I did not expect it,' he said. "I think we thought we were quite a lot more behind (the McLarens). We knew we had something more in the car and obviously we had the upgrade this weekend, but we still struggled yesterday. "I had a really good lap and I'm happy with the car. It takes time to maximise the upgrades that we put on the car.2 Hamilton's success last year was the last of his record 105 wins from 368 race starts in arguably the most successful career of all time, but since leaving Mercedes for Ferrari this year he has struggled and has yet to claim his first podium for the Italian team.

Opel Mokka receives a nip and tuck for 2025: here's what you get for your money
The Opel Mokka, often seen as a 'boutique' crossover with plenty of European flair, has been given a nip and tuck for 2025. Newly launched in South Africa, the updated model is still available in two flavours, with the Edition model replacing the previous Elegance trim grade and the GS Line once again serving as the flagship. Expect to pay R519,900 for the 1.2T Edition and R564,900 for the 1.2T GS Line. It joins the recently launched new-generation Opel Grandland - read our driving impressions here. ALSO READ: Stellantis to raise its compact SUV game in SA with Opel Frontera, Citroen Basalt Power comes from the familiar 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol engine, which delivers 96kW and 230Nm through the front wheels, via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The slightly more powerful mild hybrid version, introduced overseas recently, does not appear to have been earmarked for the local market. What sets the new model apart? It's a subtle facelift, given that the second-generation Mokka was already quite striking in its own right. But for what it's worth, the model receives updated LED headlights, with a new magnifying glass that emulates the illumination of Matrix Intelli-Lux lights.

Stellantis to raise its compact SUV game in SA with Opel Frontera and Citroen Basalt
The Opel Frontera is due in early 2026. Image: Supplied Stellantis is planning to launch two new compact SUV products in South Africa in early 2026, bolstering its Opel and Citroen line-ups in a key segment. Speaking at the recent Stellantis Week 2025, Mike Whitfield, managing director of Stellantis Sub-Saharan Africa, said the company had a clear vision to grow its presence across the region by consolidating its brands, strengthening its dealer footprint, and rebuilding trust with consumers. He said that with more than 60% of South African vehicle buyers spending less than R400,000 on a new vehicle, Stellantis would focus on delivering the right products for the right customers. Next Stay Close ✕ To that end, the current Indian-built C3 and C3 Aircross models, which are more affordable than their European-built predecessors, will be joined in early 2026 by the sportier C3 Basalt crossover. Opel is also set to launch its new Frontera early next year, he said, although it's unclear whether the German product would compete in the same entry segment. What is a Citroen Basalt? Developed primarily for the Indian and South American markets, the newcomer is essentially a sportier version of the C3 Aircross, featuring coupe-inspired body styling and a lower roofline. The Basalt is due in early 2026. Image: Supplied Citroen says it combines the dynamism of a Coupe with the robustness of an SUV, although the performance is not altogether sporty. In India, which will inevitably supply SA's vehicles, the Basalt is offered with two powertrain choices. The manual version features a 1.2-litre normally aspirated petrol engine delivering 60kW and 115Nm. The six-speed automatic model has a turbocharged version of that engine, offering 81kW and 205Nm. Opel Frontera to target Duster? Built on the same Stellantis 'Smart Car' platform as the Citroen C3 Basalt and C3 Aircross SUV, and sharing its bodyshell with the latter, the Opel Frontera was designed to compete with affordable SUVs such as the Renault Duster. Built in Slovakia it does appear to be a touch more upmarket than the C3 Aircross, although South African pricing and specifications are not confirmed as yet. Opel Frontera mild hybrid in base form. Image: Supplied In European markets it is sold with a mild hybrid 1.2-litre turbopetrol engine, in 74kW and 100kW guises, and a fully electric version is offered to. Its exterior design follows a more rugged interpretation of Opel's 'Pure' design philosophy, and the cabin has a focus on practicality, with a luggage capacity of 460 litres. Inside it differs from its Citroen sibling, with a typically Opel 'Pure Panel' cockpit that combines two 10-inch screens. Future plans and local production These two models will give Stellantis a firmer footing in the compact SUV space, while the recently launched Opel Grandland and upcoming Alfa Romeo Junior will expand its presence in the premium SUV segment. The company recently consolidated its five core brands (Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat, Jeep and Opel) into 32 'under one roof' dealer operations, while five standalone Alfa Romeo dealerships remain outside of this structure. Stellantis is pressing ahead with its plans to produce the Landtrek one-tonne bakkie at a new facility in Coega in the Eastern Cape, and this will now be joined by two additional models, including a 'new energy vehicle'. Speaking of the revised plan at Stellantis Week recently, Whitfield declined to provide further details on the new locally assembled models, but said an announcement would be made before the end of this quarter.
