Search operation to trace three JeM terrorists in J&K's Basantgarh enters third day

The Hindu4 hours ago

The search operation to track down three Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists in a forested area of Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur entered its third day on Saturday (June 28, 2025) amid heightened aerial surveillance, officials said.
The cordon and search operation is being carried out by a joint team of security forces.
A Pakistan-based JeM terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces on Thursday, while three of his associates remain trapped in the forested area of the Basantgarh belt.
Amid strengthening of the multi-tier cordon, the search operation, widened by the joint operation group, resumed this morning with the backing of drones and sniffer dogs, they said.
The cordon has been further strengthened with additional reinforcements to eliminate the remaining terrorists of the group, the officials added.
Inspector General of Police Bhim Sen Tuti said the terrorists are reported to be still within the cordoned off area.
He said that out of the four terrorists, one — the commander of the group — has been killed.
The group had been tracked for over a year. Two terrorists affiliated with JeM from this group were eliminated in Basantgarh in September last year.
On Thursday, the four terrorists were found hiding near Karoor Nallah in the Bihali high-altitude belt and were engaged by the joint search party led by the Army's Para Commandos, resulting in an encounter.
One of the terrorists killed in the encounter has been identified as Haider alias Jabbar, code-named Maulvi, from Pakistan.
Supported by overground workers (OGWs), the terrorists had been moving from one area to another using forests and natural caves to hide, officials said. Five OGWs have been arrested over the past several months in the belt for providing food and shelter to the terrorists.
It is also believed that a local terrorist, who had returned from Pakistan after several years, is actively supporting the group.
The search by troops led to the recovery of the body of the killed terrorist along with ammunition, explosive material, and cash, the officials said.
Basantgarh lies on a traditional infiltration route used by Pakistani terrorists who enter from the International Border in Kathua and move via the higher reaches to Doda and Kishtwar districts in Jammu region and further into the Kashmir Valley. It has witnessed several encounters and terror incidents in the past.
On April 25, Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh of the Army's 6 PARA was killed in an encounter with terrorists in the Basantgarh area.
On April 9, an encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Jopher-Marta belt of Basantgarh in Udhampur district.
On September 11 last year, two terrorists affiliated with JeM were killed in an encounter in the upper reaches of Basantgarh.
A CRPF inspector was killed in another encounter with terrorists at Dudu on August 19, 2024.
On July 11, 2024, the Sang police post in Udhampur's Basantgarh came under attack by terrorists but was foiled by alert cops.
On April 28, 2024, a Village Defence Guard, Mohammad Sharief, was killed in an encounter with terrorists in Basantgarh.

ED alleges cash scam in management quota admissions at 3 Bengaluru colleges

The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday alleged that admission of students through the management quota in three Bengaluru-based private colleges was being done in an "opaque" manner using money, includiang funds in cash. The federal probe agency's statement comes after they conducted searches at 17 locations on June 25-26 in a "seat blocking scam" case. The raids were carried out at the premises of BMS College of Engineering, Akash Institute of Engineering and Technology, and New Horizon College of Engineering, along with those associated with these institutions, the agency said in a statement. A few entities engaged in educational consultancy services and some private agents were also raided. The ED case stems from a Karnataka Police FIR registered by the KEA (Karnataka Examination Authority) against these colleges. The complaint alleged that these colleges colluded with unknown individuals to acquire the login credentials of students registered with the KEA and subsequently blocked seats in their name for students who did not intend to enroll, the ED said. The searches revealed "evidence" of "widespread" seat blocking and the use of cash/money in the admission process for popular professional courses in the private institutes, it said. "There is an extensive network of agents, educational consultancy service entities, which is used to bring students for admission from across India to these institutes," the statement said. The agency further alleged that the admission for management quota seats was mostly done in an opaque manner based on extraneous considerations such as cash or money. During the searches, a total of Rs 1.37 crore in cash was allegedly seized. However, the ED did not specify the source of the recovered funds. The colleges or their promoters could not be contacted for a comment on the ED charges made against them.

Pakistan: 13 soldiers killed, 29 injured in North Waziristan suicide bombing

Islamabad: As many as 13 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 29 others injured, including 19 civilians, in a suicide attack early Saturday morning in Khadi area of North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Citing security agencies, Pakistani media outlet Mashriq TV stated that a suicide bomber crashed an explosive-laden vehicle into a mine-resistant Improvised Explosive Device (IED) vehicle belonging to the Bomb Disposal Unit amid a curfew imposed due to military movement in the area. The powerful blast resulted in the killing of 13 military personnel and injuring 24 people, including 14 civilians. There were reports of indiscriminate firing also which caused injuries to 19 civilians, including women and children, in the area. Reports suggest that the rescue operations were launched immediately following the blast. According to local authorities, the condition of several injured, including women and children, remains critical and the number of casualties might rise significantly. The Usud al-Harab organisation, a sub-faction of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group affiliated with Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) Pakistan, has reportedly taken responsibility for the suicide attack. The incident is termed as the deadliest attack in North Waziristan in recent months, raising serious concerns over the deteriorating security conditions in the area. The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Army, has not yet commented on the attack. According to reports, the security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation in the region. Last month, a car bomb explosion in Gulistan Area of Qila Abdullah, a border area of Pakistan's Balochistan province with Afghanistan, killed at least four people and injured more than 20 others, eight of them critically injured. The explosion occurred in Jabbar commercial market situated on the Quetta–Chaman National Highway in Gulistan town, adjacent to the fort of Pakistan's Frontier Corps (FC). As per details, the massive explosion destroyed many shops and vehicles parked in the area and walls of the FC Fort were also damaged. Locals said that many shops in the market also caught fire. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan had claimed responsibility for the attack with Pakistani analysts suggesting a clear coordination between the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and the TTP, who have intensified their attacks in the recent past. At the same time, the BLA has also intensified its attacks on security forces in the province.

At Least 13 Pakistani Soldiers Killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Suicide Attack

New Delhi: At least 13 Pakistani soldiers were killed in a suicide attack in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province today (June 28). While Reuters has reported a toll of 13, other outlets have reported a higher number – 16. A local government official told the news agency AFP that a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden vehicle into a military convoy. The attack took place in the province's North Waziristan district. As many as 29 people – 10 army personnel and 19 civilians – are reportedly injured. Six children are among those injured. Some outlets have reported that the Pakistani Taliban has taken responsibility for the attack. The Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistan Taliban, is an alliance of formerly disparate militant groups that came together in 2007 following Pakistan military operations against Al-Qaida-related militants. The group operates along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. This comes days after Pakistan was appointed chair of the UN Security Council's 1988 Sanctions Committee, which monitors sanctions targeting the Taliban, and vice-chair of the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee.
