Hot spell to persist in Malaysia until end of July
Its director-general, Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, said the heat remains within normal levels and does not meet the criteria for an extreme heatwave, although temperatures in some areas may reach up to 36°C.
"Most areas in the country are forecast to receive minimal rainfall over the next week due to the formation of a tropical storm in the western Pacific Ocean near the Philippines.
"With the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index predicted to remain at neutral levels through the end of the year, extreme heat is not expected to strike the country during this Southwest Monsoon season," he said.
He added that the latest weather forecast model analysis shows that active tropical cyclones in the western Pacific Ocean and South China Sea are disrupting the country's rainfall patterns.
As a result, he said, cloud seeding operations in the northern regions of the Peninsular, especially in Kerian, Perak, are currently not suitable, despite the dry and low-rainfall conditions.
"The influence of active tropical cyclones makes it unsuitable to carry out cloud seeding at this time.
"However, should there be significant weather changes based on updated forecast models, we will inform the relevant authorities," he added.
Previously, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said cloud seeding would be carried out to address the issue of dry rice fields due to declining water levels at Bukit Merah Lake caused by the heat.
Hisham explained that METMalaysia acts solely as a technical advisor and agency upon receiving an official request from any party wishing to conduct cloud seeding, particularly in water shortage crises such as the one in Kerian.
"METMalaysia will conduct weather forecast analysis using the latest models, taking into account factors such as high humidity levels, the presence of towering cumulus clouds in the targeted areas, and atmospheric stability.
"All these factors will help promote cloud formation and development suitable for generating rain during cloud seeding operations," he said.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) recommends rescheduling outdoor school activities to safeguard students. 'Awareness campaigns must escalate to limit outdoor engagements, particularly for schoolchildren. Unusually hot weather: Cloud seeding operations implemented to deal with critical water level at dams
SUBANG: Five locations across the country experienced unusually hot temperatures for three consecutive days since Aug 1. The situation raised concerns about the water levels, public health and the economy in rural communities. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that in areas such as Bandar Baharu in Kedah, Selama (Perak), Temerloh (Pahang), Limbang (Sarawak), as well as Tenom and Pitas in Sabah, temperatures ranged between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, reported Sinar Harian. He said that, given the situation, the government has implemented a Cloud Seeding Operation (OPA) in the Bukit Merah Dam area, Gunung Semanggol, Perak, whose water level was at a critical level. According to him, the water reservoir level in the dam was only 12.21% or 19.80 feet. "I, along with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) director general, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) deputy director general and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) have participated in this operation using a Charlie C-130 aircraft carrying approximately 6,000 litres of sodium chloride solution. "The solution was sprayed on the towering cumulus clouds at an altitude of between 5,000 and 8,000 feet and within 45 minutes after spraying, heavy rain had occurred in the target area," he said at a press conference at RMAF Air Base Subang, on Monday (Aug 4). He said the extremely hot weather also increases the risk of haze due to forest fires. "Air Pollution Index (API) readings have increased in some areas, and this has an impact on health, especially to those at risk such as children, the elderly and respiratory patients," he said. He further commented that cloud seeding operations might also be carried out in other regions based on the monitoring by technical agencies, even if the state government does not explicitly request it. "We don't just wait for requests. If a water source is at a critical level of 30% or below, cloud seeding will continue to be implemented proactively. "In addition, the fire department has also been on standby with more than 3,300 tube wells in peatland areas to prevent forest fires due to extreme heat," he said. He explained that the Southwest Monsoon was expected to continue until mid-October and all related agencies have been instructed to prepare for any eventuality. Over 3,300 tube wells activated in fire-prone areas amid dry season
SHAH ALAM: The government has activated more than 3,300 tube wells in fire-prone areas as a precautionary measure amid extreme heat and prolonged dry weather during the ongoing Southwest Monsoon. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Fire and Rescue Department has been instructed to clean and operate the wells where necessary, particularly in high-risk zones. "These wells were prepared earlier and have now been made operational. "I've directed the Fire and Rescue Department to carry out cleaning and fire prevention efforts, especially in areas prone to forest and peat fires during periods of high temperatures," he said at a press conference after attending a cloud seeding operation at the Subang Air Force Base. Zahid, who is also the National Disaster Management Committee chairman, said swift operational responses have been coordinated through the department and local-level disaster management committees. The Southwest Monsoon, which has brought lower rainfall and higher temperatures, is expected to continue until mid-October, with authorities remaining on alert throughout the period. "Based on advice from Nadma and MetMalaysia, we are ensuring preparedness, particularly in areas experiencing extreme heat," Zahid said. He added that the Health Ministry will issue public health advisories to help minimise exposure to the heatwave. "Clear guidance should be provided to the public, especially regarding limiting outdoor activities. "This is particularly important for schoolchildren," he said, adding that coordination has been made with district education offices to reschedule outdoor school activities.
