KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain service was temporarily suspended this morning after water accumulated in its tunnel following heavy rainfall.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said the incident occurred at around 11am when one of the tunnel's drainage pumps experienced a technical fault during severe weather.
'The tunnel's drainage system includes pumps designed to handle water ingress during heavy rain. However, one of the drainage pumps failed to activate automatically, which led to water building up in the tunnel,' MAHB said in a statement here.
It said train operations were halted as a safety precaution, and technical teams were deployed to manually clear the water from the tracks. Service resumed at 12.15pm after engineers confirmed that the route was safe for operations.
MAHB said shuttle bus services to the satellite terminal continued uninterrupted throughout the suspension period, ensuring that passenger movements were not affected.
The airport operator added that work is underway to rectify the faulty pump to prevent a recurrence during future weather events.
'The Aerotrain is currently back in regular service. Our technical teams continue to monitor the system closely to ensure any operational adjustments are promptly addressed. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we fine-tune this new system,' the statement added.
This incident followed a separate one on Wednesday, where service was briefly disrupted after a passenger allegedly held a train door open for too long, causing them to become stuck.
The issue was rectified on the spot, an MAHB spokesman told Malay Mail in response.
The Aerotrain service resumed operations on Tuesday following more than two years of upgrading works valued at RM456 million. It serves as a vital link between KLIA's main terminal and the satellite terminal.
An iconic feature of KLIA since its opening in 1998, the Aerotrain now features Alstom Innovia APM 300R trainsets.
Each three-car unit can accommodate up to 270 passengers and travel at speeds of up to 56 kilometres per hour, reducing travel time between the main terminal and the satellite terminal to under three minutes.

SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is optimistic of achieving its target of 62 million passenger movements by year-end, a milestone that would mark its return to pre-pandemic levels. Group managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the positive trajectory is being driven by a series of strategic upgrades and service transformations across its network, particularly at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1. 'This year is about re-establishing our strength. Passenger movement numbers are moving in the right direction. Looking at the trend, 62 million by year-end is very achievable,' he told reporters during a media briefing on MAHB's strategic direction here today. Mohd Izani, who took the helm at MAHB in August last year, said the company has pivoted towards a more agile, responsive and customer-focused model, shedding old bureaucratic ways in favour of speed and service excellence. 'I told my team we cannot run an airport at the pace we used to. This is a customer-facing business. Passengers expect quick responses and smooth experiences, so that's what we are focusing on,' he said. He added that MAHB's transformation is anchored on three pillars: service excellence, growth, and capacity enhancement under the group's refreshed airport strategy, and the KLIA ecosystem is at the centre of this repositioning plan to build a connected and efficient hub. MAHB has already completed 14 facility upgrades in the first half of the year (H1'25) at KLIA Terminal 1, involving improved passenger clearance lanes and check-in zones. These efforts, costing about RM30 million, have increased throughput by 40%. 'These are the low-hanging fruits, done with support from our experienced partners, including Global Infrastructure Partners. They helped us fine-tune operations, such as shortening clearance times and optimising passenger flows,' he said. When asked about capital expenditure for H2'25, Mohd Izani replied that the company is still finalising the figures. On MAHB's regional competitiveness, he said the group is focused on building strength in the regional travel segment rather than competing head-on with larger hubs such as Changi (Singapore) or Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok). 'We do not need to fight head-on. We focus on our niche. Many regional carriers are already operating out of Malaysia and we can build on that. We provide the customer flow and the experience, and the connectivity will follow,' he said. He noted that collaboration between airports and airlines has improved in recent months, which bodes well for long-term route development. Asked on whether MAHB faces restrictions when engaging foreign carriers due to commitments to the national carrier, Mohd Izani said the airport operator maintains a performance-driven approach. 'We support our national airline as best we can. At the same time, we do not restrict others from coming in. Everyone has to perform. It's a level playing field,' he said. Mohd Izani said MAHB is exploring the feasibility of enabling seamless passenger transfers between KLIA Terminals 1 and 2. Proof-of-concept trials are under way, including evaluating shuttle routes and baggage transfer processes. 'We are testing how many minutes it takes to move passengers between terminals, including baggage transfers. Once that is sorted, and if airlines are aligned, it can happen,' he said, adding that the Ministry of Transport is supportive of the initiative. Commenting on the recent brief disruption to the newly resumed aerotrain service at KLIA due to rainwater accumulation, Mohd Izani said the issue was promptly resolved by replacing the faulty pump and improving the drainage system. 'We've been assured by our engineering team that it is under control now. The improvements have addressed the root cause,' he said. In preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 and the Asian Games in 2027, MAHB is curating new passenger experiences. Among them is Project Rimba, a revitalised indoor forest with thematic features including improved lighting, waterfalls and seasonal floral showcases. 'We want to give passengers something to look forward to. This is part of our commitment to continuous improvement,' he said. MAHB, now privately held by Khazanah Nasional via UEM, the Employees Provident Fund and Global Infrastructure Partners with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, continues to hold its golden share under the Ministry of Finance. Mohd Izani said the privatisation has helped expedite decision-making, with a supportive board comprising seven shareholder representatives and four government-appointed members. According to Malaysia China Insight, a bilingual online magazine, Chinese tourist arrivals in Malaysia have surged by more than a third this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The visa waiver has particularly benefited individual travellers and families. Chinese tourist Hong Na shared her relief over the new policy. 'Before, getting a visa required planning months ahead. It was a hassle. Now, we can just pack our bags and go whenever we want,' she said. Echo Liu, another Chinese traveller, echoed the sentiment, saying the exemption eased her first overseas trip. 'We were nervous about visas and language barriers, but everything has been smooth,' she added. The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia announced on Wednesday (July 16) that Malaysian citizens can now enjoy visa-free entry to China for short-term visits of up to 90 days within 180 days. The policy took effect on Thursday (July 17). Under the agreement, Malaysian and Chinese passport holders can enter, exit, or transit through each other's countries without a visa for stays of up to 30 days per visit. National Art Gallery showcases reflection of BIMP-EAGA through contemporary art

THE Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) through the National Visual Arts Development Board (LPSVN) has inaugurated the Isle to Isle: A Reflection of BIMP-EAGA Through Contemporary Art exhibition that features artworks by artists from the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The exhibition opens to the public from today (July 18) until May 31, 2026 at Gallery 3A of the National Art Gallery om Kuala Lumpur. Officiated by MOTAC secretary-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot, the exhibition is part of a cultural diplomacy initiative under the MOTAC Strategic Plan 2021-2025, particularly in strengthening strategic partnerships in the tourism and cultural sectors. It also aligns with the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 which is based on the principles of Resilience, Inclusivity, Sustainability and Economic Competitiveness (RISE) besides being in conjunction with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship this year. Among others, this exhibition highlights visual interpretations by artists from all four countries by focusing on themes such as economic activity, social connections, environmental care, knowledge and the unique local wisdom that defines the eastern ASEAN region. Very broadly the BIMP-EAGA region covers the entire Brunei, the Kalimantan corridor in Indonesia from Pontianak to Balikpapan, the Sulawesi and Maluku regions, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan as well as the southern Philippines, including the islands of Mindanao and Palawan. Artists and curators The Malaysian artists featured in this exhibition are Josrie Haral, Muslim Mattajim and Dr Mohamad Faizuan Mat. Brunei is represented by Umi Zaty Bazillah Zakaria and Asilah Maziyah Mohamad Yussof. From the Philippines, the participating artists are Chester M. Mato, Romy Jones Mata, Leonard B. Ansiong, Brendale Taj Hassan Tadeo and Alynnah Macla. Indonesia is represented by Audro Chrustofel Rompas along with two art collectives, Susur Galur from Pontianak featuring Muchamad Riduwan, Tito Prastio, and Elfrida Citra Rominggagas; and Muara Suara from Samarinda featuring Robby Ocktavian, Prashasti Wilujeng Putri and Rio Raharjo. Regional curators have also played a vital role in shaping the curatorial direction of the exhibition, including Zakaria Omar (Brunei Darussalam), I Wayan Seriyoga Parta and Gusti Hendra Pratama (Indonesia) as well as Al Nezzar B. Ali (the Philippines). All in all, the exhibition showcases a variety of artistic expressions, including mixed media, installations, paintings, photography, audio and videography. A total of 12 artworks are exhibited, including one artwork from the National Visual Art Collection by Malaysian artist Yee I-Lann.
