Field Of Gold tops nine hunting Irish Guineas crown

Rhyl Journal22-05-2025
Ruling Court just got first run on John and Thady Gosden's charge at Newmarket, with Kieran Shoemark unable to reel in the Godolphin runner and going down by half a length.
Shoemark has since been demoted from number one jockey at Clarehaven and the Gosdens' new policy of putting up the 'best available' rider will see Irish champion Colin Keane in the saddle at the Curragh.
Field Of Gold's owners Juddmonte have also declared the Harry Charlton-trained Cosmic Year, who steps up in class after completing a visually impressive hat-trick in Listed company at Newmarket last time out, and Andrew Balding's Windlord.
Aidan O'Brien will bid to claim a record-extending 13th win in the race via Officer, a course-and-distance scorer in the Tetrarch Stakes earlier this month, and Expanded, a disappointing ninth in the English Guineas after being sent off as the third favourite.
Joseph O'Brien's Scorthy Champ seeks to bounce back from finishing seventh at Newmarket, while Jessica Harrington's Futurity winner Hotazhell will make a belated seasonal debut after being a late withdrawal from the French equivalent due to ground concerns.
Rashabar bids to end a frustrating run of seconds since landing last year's Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot for Brian Meehan, having subsequently been runner-up in the Prix Morny, the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and the Greenham Stakes, while Donnacha O'Brien's Comanche Brave completes the line-up.
All eyes will be on Australian import Storm Boy in the Group Two Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes over six furlongs, with the Ballydoyle inmate having performed with credit at the highest level in his native country.
He will be opposed by a quartet of British raiders in Kevin Ryan's Grand Grey, the Charlie Hills-trained Iberian, James's Delight for Clive Cox and Karl Burke's Lethal Levi.

Arsenal transfer news: Real Madrid star Rodrygo makes major call amid Liverpool hijack

Arsenal have had a very busy summer transfer window so far with Mikel Arteta welcoming a host of new faces to North London and it appears that some other big signings could be in the offing The 2025/26 Premier League season is drawing ever closer for Arsenal. There's now less than two weeks until the Gunners' opening game of the campaign against Manchester United at Old Trafford. ‌ It all means there's still plenty of work for Mikel Arteta to do to get his squad in the best position it can be. Two pre-season friendlies remain for the North London side to test themselves ahead of meeting the Red Devils against Spanish duo Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao. ‌ Those two games will give a host of new signings more chances to integrate, with ex-Chelsea man Noni Madueke finally expected to link up with his new teammates. Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Cristhian Mosquera will all get the chance to step out at the Emirates Stadium for the first time. ‌ While Arsenal already have a host of new faces in situ, their work in the transfer market might not be quite finished yet. Arsenal remain keen on adding a new winger to their squad. And it appears that they already know the man they want. Take a look at all of the latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Rodrygo makes transfer decision Rodrygo looks set to stay with Real Madrid despite serious interest from the Premier League. Arsenal were previously linked with a move for the Brazilian wideman this summer, albeit there is competition from Liverpool and Tottenham. ‌ But it appears that Rodrygo wants to stay where he is. According to Spanish outlet AS, Rodrygo is now keen to stay at the Bernabeu and fight for his place under Xabi Alonso. Rodrygo believes he has enough quality to add to the existing options at the club. And that could potentially force Arsenal to look elsewhere for attacking recruits. Liverpool complete hijack While Liverpool were potentially looking to rival Arsenal for Rodrygo, the Reds have already beaten their Premier League rivals in the race for one player. The Reds have confirmed a deal for Salford City striker Will Wright despite the Gunners having agreed a deal for the teenager. ‌ It was previously reported that Arsenal offered around £250k for the youngster but he has instead opted to move to Anfield. Wright has already played for Liverpool's under-21 side after completing his switch to Anfield. ‌ Wonderkid rejects move French defender Jeremy Jacquet has turned down a move to Arsenal after an approach from the Gunners. It was suggested that the North London side had made an attempt to sign the 20-year-old. But Jacquet has rejected that opportunity according to Foot Mercato and his current club Rennes are now attempting to rebuff any further interest having offered the youngster a new deal until 2029.

Rangers UCL opponents Viktoria Plzen set to lose star player as multi-million pound man's absence ‘a huge loss'

The attacking midfielder was last night finalising an expected £7.5 million switch to French giants Olympique Lyon. He failed to travel to Scotland and gutted Koubek said: "It's definitely going to affect us. "We have to work without Sulc and that's a big loss. "He's been absolutely amazing for us for the last three years in attack. "We have to deal with it and sort it out as a team. "What's important now is the strength of motivation for other players who in the past haven't played because he was on the pitch. "I'm hoping these other players will now have a chance to show their potential." Like the whole of Scottish football, Koubek couldn't help but pick up on Russell Martin's blast at his players on Saturday evening after Gers' disappointing display at Fir Park. Experienced boss Koubek, 73, believes the Light Blues gaffer was simply firing up his troops for tonight's Champions League duel. Koubek said: "I noticed some things in the media. Players are running the Rangers dressing room - Martin knows EXACTLY what he's doing "However, they have beaten Panathinaikos in the previous round, which is a really great success. "OK, they didn't have that success in their first league game. "But I wonder if the coach did it in a cunning way to motivate the players more for this match against us." Now in his third stint as Plzen boss, Koubek admits it will be a special moment in his lengthy coaching career to lead a side out at Ibrox. And while they have the same failsafe that Gers have of guaranteed Europa League football, the former Sparta Prague goalkeeper is still aiming for the Champions League proper. Koubek said: "I'm 74 years old soon and in my whole career I was looking up to teams like Glasgow Rangers. "I have seen them on TV and witnessed the atmosphere at Ibrox. "I never imagined I would lead a club like Viktoria Plzen, which I respect so much, against a team like Glasgow Rangers. "Yes, we have a certain guarantee now in terms of the Europa League. "But we have to be ambitious and the goal of every sportsman is to reach the highest level." Plzen skipper Lukas Hejda admits it will be strange to take to the field without talisman Sulc to drive the team forward. Like his gaffer Koulec, the 35-year-old stopper is determined to reach the latter stages of the competition. Hejda said: "I don't know how it's going to be without Sulc. "He has played in 90 percent of our games in the last three years, so it's difficult to know how different it will be. 3 "I would say it's easier now we know we have a Europa League spot guaranteed. "But as a team we want to fight for the opportunity to go to the Champions League. "That is our aim and we are here to get the best result we can." Hejda has already tasted football on Scottish soil after helping Plzen see off Hearts at Tynecastle in their Europa League play-off last season. The Czech international is hoping for a similar result tonight but thinks his pals face a much sterner task at Ibrox. Hejda said: "We have one win from Scotland already and we would definitely like to add a second one! "However, we can't compare the matches because the teams are very different. "The 3-1 win against Servette in the last round was a great result for us away from home. "But we can't expect anything like that here, because Rangers have different qualities."
