Ford government's changes to children's aid societies miss what actually needs fixing, critics charge
Proposed changes by the Ford government to bring new controls over the province's children aid societies focus too much on finances and not enough on kids' wellbeing, critics charge.
The legislation, announced in late May as part of the sweeping Supporting Children and Students Act, would give the province greater financial oversight of children's aid societies, as well as require increased transparency over how the organizations operate.

Is Ford Blue Fueling Model e's Future in the Changing Auto Landscape?
The automotive giant, Ford Motor Company F, is steadfast in its race toward relevance. As the company electrifies its product lineup through the Model e segment, its legacy Ford Blue segment is the cash engine behind it. The traditional internal combustion engine business has iconic models like the F-Series, Ranger, Maverick, Bronco, Explorer and Mustang under its name. In the last reported quarter, total wholesale volume in the Ford Blue segment decreased 6% year over year to 588,000 units but exceeded our expectation of 524,000 units. Ford Blue segment had logged revenues of $21 billion (with an EBIT of $96 million) compared to Ford Pro and Model e's revenues of $15.2 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, in the first quarter of 2025. Model e remained a loss-making segment. As Model e's ambitions require capital-intensive investments, Ford primarily funds those with the profitability from its ICE vehicles. The massive Ford Blue segment continues to generate profits to balance off losses, maintain customer loyalty with legacy models, leverage dealer networks and lead through innovation in hybrid models. This would act as a strong foundation for Model e to build on its EV and software-led business. Ford expects to sell fewer ICE vehicles compared to last year. Additionally, a shift in product mix and foreign exchange headwinds will drag profits. Despite that, it is expected to sufficiently do well as a bridge to EVs' long-term growth strategy. Peer Check: GM & STLA General Motors Company ( GM ), Ford's closest rival, boasts of 17.2% U.S. auto market share. General Motors has lowered its full-year 2025 guidance, owing to an estimated $4-$5 million exposure to the impacts of auto tariffs. However, it is advancing well in its electrification journey. In the final quarter of 2024, General Motors' EV portfolio became 'variable profit positive' with plans to cut EV-related losses further this year. On the other hand, the company continues to invest heavily in expanding ICE production at the U.S. plants. Stellantis N.V. ( STLA ), another multinational automaker, has plans to reassess its capital spending strategies. The company has also brought down its EV production and is bringing its ICE back. Stellantis notices that U.S. markets are still demanding the traditional gas-powered muscle cars. EVs are gaining traction but will be put in the backseat for now. A slower shift to EVs will allow Stellantis to examine its infrastructure challenges. Ford government sends supervisors into more Ontario school boards, sidelining trustees
The Ford government will sideline trustees at four school boards, including both Toronto administrations, as the education minister continues a hands-on approach to governance reform. On Friday, Minister Paul Calandra announced he would send supervisors into Toronto, Toronto Catholic, Ottawa-Carleton and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. The Thames Valley District School Board in western Ontario has recently also been placed under supervision. 'Each of these boards has failed in its responsibility to parents and students by losing sight of its core mission,' Calandra said in a statement. 'I will take action to restore focus, rebuild trust and put students first.' The move effectively gives the provincial government control over the day-to-day decisions of those boards, taking it away from trustees elected in October 2022. Provincially appointed supervisors will now make calls ranging from the financial to new bylaws or facilities. Story continues below advertisement Recently tabled legislation — which has not yet been passed into law — will make it easier for Calandra to take control of school boards in the future, allowing him to sideline trustees for reasons not related to financial mismanagement and without a recommendation from a third party. Second wave of school board changes The changes announced Friday follow a major April announcement by Calandra, in which he took over the Thames Valley board and set in motion investigations into Toronto, Toronto Catholic and Ottawa-Carleton. He also set a series of deadlines for the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board to submit a governance plan — and work out how to repay the costs of a $145,000 trip to Italy and an art purchase. Story continues below advertisement In April, Calandra said the Brant Haldimand Norfolk board had spent more than Thames Valley — which put almost $40,000 toward a trip to the Toronto Blue Jays Hotel — but that its finances were ultimately in better shape. It avoided having a supervisor appointed, but was given a 30-day deadline to complete financial and management recommendations, as well as to repay the costs of the trip. 'If that board doesn't do what we are asking them to do, if they don't follow through on the additional recommendations, then I will use the tools that are available to me to take further action,' Calandra said on April 23.

Bumper orders for Xiaomi's new SUV fuels pricing threat to Tesla
Exceptionally strong initial orders for Xiaomi's XIACF YU7 electric sport utility vehicle sent shares in the automotive newcomer to a record high on Friday and fanned speculation that Tesla TSLA-T may have to cut prices to fight back. In the first 18 hours after the YU7 went on sale, Xiaomi received some 240,000 orders that it considers locked in, with buyers having paid either a hefty deposit for ready-to-deliver cars or a smaller deposit for cars still to be made. The smartphone and appliance maker made a huge splash in China's electric vehicle market with the launch of its first vehicle, the SU7 sedan, in March last year. The car has outsold Tesla's Model 3 in China on a monthly basis since December and has even earned a rave review from Ford CEO Jim Farley. The YU7 is only its second model and priced from 253,500 yuan (US$35,360), it undercuts Tesla's Model Y by nearly 4 per cent. That will likely lead to more market share loss for the U.S. automaker, analysts said. At one Xiaomi car showroom in Beijing, dozens of people were gathered around the YU7. Otto Shi, a 26-year-old Tesla Model Y owner who works in finance, said he was considering getting a YU7 for his father who currently drives a Mercedes-Benz. Tesla sales drop in Europe for fifth month in a row despite Musk's 'major rebound' promise 'We could take turns to drive the Model Y and YU7,' he said, adding that he was impressed by Xiaomi's prowess in supply chains and the SU7's success had made him believe Xiaomi is the ideal Chinese brand to switch to. Xiaomi's shares shot 8 per cent higher in early trade to an all-time high but later pared gains to close up 3.6 per cent. They have risen by more than 70% so far this year to value the company at roughly $190 billion, making it the best performing large-cap stock in Asia Pacific, according to LSEG data. As domestic rivals increasingly win over Chinese consumers with snazzy new features, Tesla's share of the Chinese EV market has fallen from a peak of 15 per cent in 2020 to 10 per cent last year and then again to 7.6 per cent for the first five months of 2025. Citi analysts said in a note to clients that it may have to cut prices further, offer its 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) driver assistance software for free and offer more financing incentives if it is to compete successfully with Xiaomi. Tesla, which counts China as its biggest market according to first-quarter sales numbers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Last year, China accounted for roughly a fifth of its revenue. Tesla's refresh to best-selling Model Y SUV starts on rocky road While Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun acknowledged that Tesla's driving assistance software was superior, he touted a range of other features where he said the YU7 outperformed the Model Y. The YU7's base model is equipped with a 96.3 kWh battery pack, offering a driving range of up to 835 km on a single charge and supporting high-power fast charging. That compares with a maximum range of 719 km for the redesigned Tesla Model Y, which uses a smaller 78.4 kWh battery. Its backseats have drawers for storage under them and the YU7's driver assistance software comes at no extra charge while Tesla charges 64,000 yuan for its smart driving software, he added. On Thursday night, Xiaomi said it had received 289,000 orders for the YU7 in the first hour after it went on sale, more than three times the level for its SU7 when it launched. Lei has said, however, that a portion of orders was likely being placed by scalpers. On Chinese secondhand platform Xianyu, there were hundreds of people on Friday looking to sell their position in the order queue to others. Aiming to mitigate such scalping, Xiaomi is now limiting each customer to purchasing two cars at most.
