AFC under fire over Saudi, Qatar hosting World Cup qualifiers

KUALA LUMPUR: Tensions are mounting across the continent after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed Qatar and Saudi Arabia as hosts for the fourth round of World Cup qualifiers — sparking backlash from Indonesia, Iraq, Oman and the UAE.
The centralised playoff format, involving six teams, will run from Oct 8-14, with the two group winners earning direct spots at the 2026 World Cup.
The runners-up will then contest an inter-confederation playoff in a two-legged tie on Nov 13 and 18.
"The AFC has confirmed the Qatar FA (QFA) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) as the host member associations for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers," read an AFC statement on Saturday.
However, the announcement has stirred controversy, with several qualified teams raising concerns over the lack of neutrality in choosing host countries that are also participants in the playoffs.
The Oman FA (OFA) was among the first to criticise the decision, stressing that no team should enjoy home advantage and calling for fairness and transparency.
"The OFA stresses the importance of adopting transparency and fairness in all stages of organising continental and international tournaments," the statement read.
Meanwhile, the Iraq FA (IFA) said it was among the first to submit a formal bid via AFC's online platform, complete with full logistical and technical documentation.
In a follow-up letter dated June 7, the IFA reiterated its commitment and requested the matches be staged at neutral venues.
"Holding the playoffs on the home soil of any participating team could compromise competitive balance," the IFA said.
The UAE FA also echoed the sentiment, stressing that transparency should guide AFC's decisions.
"The selection process must comply with the regulations and statutes that guarantee the rights of all national teams," said the UAE FA.
Indonesia joined the calls for clarification this week after securing their place in the final round with a 1-0 win over China.
Team manager Ahmed Zaki told local media that the Indonesia FA (PSSI) would be seeking clarification from the AFC.
"Fourth-round matches should be held at neutral venues," said Zaki, adding that nations such as Japan, South Korea, Uzbekistan and Jordan would be more appropriate hosts.
Former Indonesia striker Bambang Nurdiansyah backed Iraq's protest, while current head coach Patrick Kluivert took a more diplomatic stance.
"I don't have a problem with the venue, as long as it meets quality standards," said Kluivert in an interview with Bolasport.
Despite the AFC's confirmation, rumblings persist. Reports have surfaced suggesting the confederation may now be reconsidering its decision.
Five alternative host countries are believed to be under review — with Malaysia and Kuwait considered front-runners, alongside Bahrain, Jordan and Thailand.
The official draw for the playoff groups is scheduled for July 17.
But with four of the six qualified nations questioning the legitimacy of the current hosting arrangements, it remains to be seen whether the AFC will stand firm or bow to mounting pressure for neutrality.

Rugby-Schmidt not tempted to stay on despite Wallabies beating Lions in tour finale

FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Autumn Internationals - England v Australia - Allianz Stadium Twickenham, London, Britain - November 9, 2024 Australia head coach Joe Schmidt before the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File Photo SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia coach Joe Schmidt said he would be sticking to his plan to stand down next July despite his team showing some genuine promise by winning the final test against the British & Irish Lions 22-12 on Saturday. Robbie Deans was sacked as coach after his Wallabies side lost 2-1 to the Lions in 2013 but encouraging performances during this series, capped by the third test victory, meant Schmidt was faced with questions about staying on. Schmidt originally signed a short-term deal up until the end of the Lions series because of his desire to spend more time with his family in New Zealand and help look after his youngest son, who has severe epilepsy. In April, he agreed to extend the deal until next July when he is scheduled to hand over the reins to Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss. "I'm looking forward to Les Kiss coming in and taking over," the 59-year-old said when asked about extending again until the 2027 World Cup, which Australia will host. "I actually apologise to the players. A little while ago, I bit one of their heads off, and my son had had a bad day. I can normally separate the two things, but it does impact me when he's had a bad day. "I know that I've a short enough shelf life and need to be more present at home. I haven't been home for two months. "As much as I just think they're a great group of young men. There's other things that I need to make sure I tick off." In victory as in defeat, Schmidt is not given to hyperbolic comments about his team and he merely said that he had been impressed by how they bounced back after losing the second test, and the series, to a late try in Melbourne last week. He also gave a little insight into the thoroughness of his preparations after Saturday's match was suspended for 40 minutes due to a lightning warning in the area. That the Wallabies came out firing after the delay while the Lions were a bit flat was clearly no accident. "We had been warned that there might be lightning, so we had a little bit of a plan," Schmidt said. "We wanted to make sure that players kept moving. So we had different guys rotating onto the bikes. "We had four balls in the changing room that we've just thrown around just so they could stay connected, and the rest of the time it was really just trying to get us organised for the restart of the game. "The players stayed dialled in really well." (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, editing by Peter Rutherford)

Prosecutors seek trial for PSG's Hakimi over rape charge

NANTERRE, France: French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic progress to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on 25 Feb, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. The woman went to a police station following the encounter alleging rape and was questioned by police. Although the woman refused to make a formal accusation, prosecutors decided to press charges against the player. She told police at the time that she had met Hakimi in January 2023 on Instagram. On the night in question she said she had travelled to his house in a taxi paid for by Hakimi. She told police Hakimi had started kissing her and making non-consensual sexual advances, before raping her, a police source told AFP at the time. She said she managed to break free to text a friend who came to pick her up. Contacted by AFP after Friday's development Hakimi's lawyer Fanny Colin described the call by prosecutors for a trial as "incomprehensible and senseless in light of the case's elements." "We, along with Achraf Hakimi, remain as calm as we were at the start of the proceedings. "If these requisitions were to be followed, we would obviously pursue all avenues of appeal," she continued. According to Colin, her client had "been the target of an attempted extortion." "Nothing in this case suggests an attempted extortion," Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, said. "My client welcomes this news with immense relief," she told AFP. "We will not tolerate any smear or destabilisation campaign, as is unfortunately still too often the case for women who have the courage to report the rape of which they are victims," she added. The son of a cleaning lady and a street vendor, both Moroccans who have lived in Spain since the 1980s, Hakimi was born in Getafe, a southern suburb of Madrid. Hakimi came through the youth system at Real Madrid before joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He went on to make 73 appearances for the German club. He moved to Inter Milan in 2020 and then on to PSG in 2021 where he has established himself as an integral part of the team. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.--AFP

Prosecutors seek trial for PSG's Achraf Hakimi over rape allegations

FRENCH prosecutors have requested that Paris Saint-Germain footballer Achraf Hakimi stand trial over allegations of rape dating back to 2023. The Moroccan international denies the charges. The Nanterre prosecutor's office confirmed to AFP that they had formally asked the investigating judge to refer the case to a criminal court. 'It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order,' the office stated. Hakimi, 26, played a pivotal role in PSG's Champions League victory earlier this year, scoring in the final against Inter Milan. He was charged in March 2023 after a 24-year-old woman accused him of rape. The accuser alleged that Hakimi arranged for her transport to his home in Boulogne-Billancourt while his family was away. She later reported the incident to police, claiming non-consensual advances. Though she initially declined to file a formal complaint, prosecutors proceeded with charges. Hakimi's lawyer, Fanny Colin, called the prosecution's request 'incomprehensible and senseless,' maintaining his innocence and suggesting an 'attempted extortion.' The accuser's lawyer, Rachel-Flore Pardo, dismissed these claims, stating her client felt 'immense relief' at the development. Born in Spain to Moroccan parents, Hakimi rose through Real Madrid's academy before stints at Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. He joined PSG in 2021 and starred in Morocco's historic 2022 World Cup run. - AFP
