How Ganguly's Shirt Swirl Inspired Archer's Match-Winning Show vs India
Interestingly, England scripted a famous win at Lord's on the same day they had won the 2019 ODI World Cup final in rather controversial circumstances. However, when Stokes reminded Archer about that momentous day six years ago, Archer thought of the Ganguly moment that happened 17 years ago.
"I was like, no...that World Cup that we won? He was like, 'oh that one'. He's an absolute beauty, that boy. I just had the feeling today and that Rishabh Pant wicket was massive in a low run chase," said Stokes Stokes was very mindful of England's WC win in 2019 on this day.
"We knew that turning up this morning was genuinely the reason why we went with me and Jof (Archer). It felt right in my tummy that Jof was gonna do something this morning to break the game open.
"Gut feel doesn't always work but those two wickets he got this morning obviously swung the game massively in our favour." The England captain has supported Archer wholeheartedly and they also share a special bond. It was evident on the field in the morning session.
"So he wanted me to come to mid-on and (Brydon) Carsey to go to leg slip so he could talk to me. But I didn't trust Carsey at leg slip, to be honest," said Stokes.
Stokes got the player of the match award for leading from the front.
Fresh off an injury comeback, Stokes completed spells of 9.2 overs and 10 overs in his bid to maintain pressure on India. Despite his workload in the game, Stokes said he would be fine for the fourth Test beginning in Manchester on July 23.
"Oh, yeah. I'll be absolutely sound for Manchester. It's a big break. Obviously, I was pretty tired after Headingley. But, yeah, after we walked off the field there, sort of a whole new level of tiredness hit.
"And it's obviously different when you're ... I've been in games like that before, not as a captain, where I've been given the ball to run in and try to bowl the team to victory.
"But then now, adding on the decision making around bowling changes, field placings, how I feel we're gonna get this win. Obviously, there's a physical element of bowling in the fourth innings, but then it shouldn't be underestimated how the emotional and mental tiredness does also get you as well," he said.
In a big series like this, there would always be tension
Stokes was expectedly asked about the heated exchanges and sledging by players of both teams over the course of the game, and he did not read too much into it.
"I think in a big series like this there was always going to be a moment where the two teams were going to clash. I'm all for it as long as it does not cross the line.
"If you think about it, it's 22 people out there playing for their country. The highest honour you can have in our sport. So, you can understand that sometimes emotions and tensions can get quite high.
"But I don't think anyone in the Indian dressing room or anyone in the English dressing room is going to cry themselves to sleep over what was said or done out there. I don't think it overstepped the line from the India team or from our team.
"It wasn't really boiling up...it just happened but it adds to the spectacle of England vs India doesn't it?," he signed off.

Liverpool legend Fowler, Constantine and Jamil among applicants for Indian men's football team job: Report
A large number of 170 coaches have applied for the Indian men's football team head coach role after Manolo Marquez's exit. Some top names in the list are Stephen Constantine, Robbie Fowler, Khalid Jamil, Antonio Lopez Habas and Sergio Lobera. read more A new Indian football team coach is expected to be picked in August. Images: Robbie Fowler on X/Stephen Constantine on X Former India coach Stephen Constantine, Liverpool legends Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell and Jamshedpur FC's Khalid Jamil are among the 170 applicants for the Indian men's football team head coach role, following Manolo Marquez's earlier this month. Marquez, who is back with Indian Super League (ISL) side FC Goa, left the Indian men's football team head coach position after a one-year tumultuous tenure, which has seen the team plummet to 133rd FIFA ranking. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The AIFF is now in need to quickly find a replacement as India are still fighting to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia. Among the many applicants, the most prominent are former Liverpool footballers Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell, former Barcelona reserves manager Jordi Vinyals and former Brazil U-17 coach Caio Zanardie, as per a report in the Times of India. Former Tajikistan, Maldives and Afghanistan coach Peter Segrt, Mauritania coach Aritz Lopez Garai and Roel Coumans, who was part of the Australian team coaching staff at the 2018 World Cup, have also applied to AIFF. More from Football The Indian football federation, however, is not happy as it feels the 'high-profile' candidates are missing. 'Last year there was massive interest in the job, many of them (current) national team coaches and those who had managed teams at the FIFA World Cup,' a senior AIFF official told TOI. 'This time around, there's also interest from across the world, but not as many high-profile candidates.' Will Constantine get a third tenure? Constantine, who has coached India in 73 matches across two tenures, is one of the most familiar names. He has won multiple tournaments with India, including the LG Cup (2002), SAFF Cup (2015), Tri Nation Series (2017) and Inter-Continental Cup (2018). Antonio Lopez Habas and Sergio Lobera, who have trophies in ISL, are also in contention after applying for the job. Former Punjab FC coach Staikos Vergetis, who won the I-League with them, has also applied. The list of Indian coaches who have applied for the top job includes Khalid Jamil, Sanjoy Sen and Santosh Kashyap. The AIFF is still to pick a list of final candidates, who will be interviewed before a final appointment is made. India's next match is against Singapore, away from home, but they may also play some friendlies in September and October FIFA windows. They are currently at the bottom of their group in the final round of qualifiers after losing 1-0 to Hong Kong last month. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India still have four matches left in the group, but only the winner will qualify for the Asian Cup, which means the Blue Tigers must aim for four wins out of all remaining matches.

Yes, it will make a significant difference. No, it won't have much impact. 'The management might not spot these counterproductive behaviours. The players and leaders themselves should call others out for their inflated egos. Often, teams put up with it because a player has so much talent. We look for early warning signs and wean the big egos out pretty quickly. Our motto is: 'If you can't change the people, change the people.'' 'Her Specialty Is...': Sneh Rana Praises Rising India Star Shree Charani
N Shree Charani claimed 10 wickets during India's historic T20I series win over England. India allrounder Sneh Rana has lavished praise on young bowlers N. Shree Charani and Kranti Goud, crediting their seamless transition into international cricket amid the absence of senior pacers Renuka Singh Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar. The two rising stars have impressed on India's ongoing tour of England, playing key roles in both the T20I and ODI series. Shree Charani, a standout performer in the five-match T20I series, which India clinched 3-2, claimed 10 wickets and consistently posed problems for the English batters. Goud, meanwhile, has contributed three wickets in the ongoing ODI series, which stands locked at 1-1 ahead of the final game. Speaking on the eve of the decider, Rana expressed her admiration for both bowlers. 'Charani is a really great bowler. She has performed very well in the domestic season and in the WPL. Her specialty is the number of revolutions she puts on the ball. It is fantastic to see," said Rana. 'She has a high arm action. Whenever she comes to bowl, it always feels like she will take a wicket immediately. She has a good knowledge of her skills, so it feels good to have a conversation with her," she added. Rana acknowledged that while Charani and Goud may be short on international experience, their success in domestic cricket and the Women's Premier League has equipped them with the confidence to thrive at the highest level. 'In terms of international cricket, I would say there is less experience. But otherwise, they have got a lot of experience in domestic cricket. Kranti Goud has been doing really well, even in the WPL," she said. 'It's a very simple conversation with them – whatever confidence you show there, you have to do the same thing in international cricket." The Indian team, she added, is focused on the present challenge rather than being burdened by future goals like the World Cup. 'We are not thinking much about the future. Obviously, the World Cup is impending. It is an important year. But presently, what are we doing, what are we working on, and are we able to execute it or not? That is important." On her own bowling approach, Rana stressed the importance of partnerships over fixed roles. 'It's not important where you are bowling from. What's important is how you bowl in partnership. My mindset has always been to take wickets first, and we prepare ourselves in the nets in the same way. 'First of all, we go for wickets. But on the other hand, how you contain is also important – because when you contain, automatically there is pressure on the opponent, and that brings wickets," she added. With a shot at a rare ODI series win in England, India's blend of youth and experience is eager to make it count. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
