Putellas ready to lead Spain at Euro 2025 after injury sidelined her in 2022

MADRID (AP) — Alexia Putellas doesn't have fond memories of the last Women's European Championship, when she tore a knee ligament on the eve of the tournament in England three years ago.
Things are different now as Spain prepares for its campaign at Euro 2025 in Switzerland, with Putellas saying she's better than ever and ready to try to lead Spain to its first title in the competition.
'I'm not going to lie, it's a competition that I had in my sights after the injury I suffered just before the start of the last Euro,' she said. 'I've been preparing for this moment for a long time and I want to enjoy it.'
The two-time world player of the year was coming off one of her most impressive seasons when she injured her left knee during a practice session just days before Spain's opener at Euro 2022. It kept her out of action for nearly a year and dealt a blow to Spain's chances in the tournament, where it was ousted by England in the quarterfinals.
Putellas says she has improved a lot since then, even though other Spanish players such as Aitana Bonmatí — a two-time Ballon d'Or winner herself — have emerged as top stars.
'Without a doubt I'm a better Alexia,' she said. 'I know myself a lot better, I know my qualities, I know what I have been working on. In the end, all the suffering makes you evolve as a person and as an athlete. I've learned to manage the bad moments a lot better, as well as the good moments.'
Putellas has had another outstanding season and is again among the favorites for the world player of the year award. She thrived as Barcelona won the domestic treble and reached another Champions League final.
'The individual award is not something too important for me,' the 31-year-old Putellas said. 'But it would show that you've done something good and, from where I'm coming from — from the lowest of the lowest after the injury — it would give some value to the effort that it was put into the recovery. We'll see, but the most important thing is to win the Euro.'
Bonmatí won the last two world player of the year awards, and she is now the one enduring an ordeal as after falling ill with viral meningitis just a few days before Spain traveled to Switzerland for the tournament. Bonmatí was released from the hospital on Sunday to rejoin the national squad, but it still wasn't clear how much she would participate.

Spain will open its tournament Thursday against Portugal. It will also face Belgium and Italy in Group B. The nation's best result in the European tournament was a semifinals appearance in 1997.
Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup in 2023 and the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. It then just missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics, when it lost to Brazil in the semifinals and to Germany in the bronze-medal match.
'It's never easy to win a Euro,' Putellas said. 'We need to have maximum respect toward the other nations. There are great teams participating. But we have a lot of faith in our team, and if we give our best we will be that much closer to winning.'

Wimbledon: The record number of seeded men out in the 1st round includes Zverev and Musetti

LONDON (AP) — There was three-time Grand Slam finalist and No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, outplayed over five sets in a first-round loss at Wimbledon to 72nd-ranked Arthur Rinderknech, who entered Tuesday with a 1-4 career record at the All England Club and zero trips past the third round in 18 appearances at majors. There was No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti, a semifinalist at Wimbledon last year and at the French Open last month, sent home Tuesday by Nikoloz Basilashvili, a qualifier ranked 126th who only once has made it as far as the fourth round in his 31 previous Grand Slam tournaments. And on and on went the upsets on Day 2 at the grass-court major, meaning at least 12 seeded men would fail to get to the second round with more left to play — the highest total at Wimbledon since it began assigning 32 seeds in 2001. There were fewer surprises in the women's bracket, with eight seeds gone before Tuesday was done, but No. 3 Jessica Pegula was among those leaving. The American was the runner-up at last year's U.S. Open and was coming off a grass-court title in Germany over the weekend, defeating Iga Swiatek in the final, yet didn't pose much of a challenge to 116th-ranked Elisabetta Cocciaretto in a 6-2, 6-3 loss that lasted less than an hour. Two other major finalists, No. 5 Zheng Qinwen and No. 15 Karolina Muchova, also were eliminated Tuesday, as were No. 26 Marta Kostyuk and No. 25 Magdalena Frech, whose opponent, 18-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko, lost in qualifying last week and only got into the field when another player, Anastasia Potapova, withdrew with an injured hip. Nothing was quite as out-of-nowhere, though, as Rinderknech's success. 'What a moment. Such emotions,' Rinderknech, a 29-year-old from France, said after completing his 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 victory across 4 hours, 40 minutes against Zverev in a match suspended Monday night at a set apiece. 'I don't even know where to start.' He ended things with a backhand winner, then dropped to his stomach, face down, on Centre Court. Zverev joined Musetti — who hadn't played since a leg injury forced him to stop at Roland-Garros and was a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 loser against Basilashvili — as top-10 losers on Tuesday, a day after No. 8 Holger Rune and No. 9 Daniil Medvedev departed. Other seeded men exiting on Day 2 included No. 27 Denis Shapovalov, No. 28 Alexander Bublik and No. 30 Alex Michelsen. Rinderknech pulled off his win thanks to some terrific serving, delivering 25 aces and saving all nine break points he faced. He converted three break chances against Zverev and won the point on 44 of his 55 trips to the net. 'It's my first top-five win, in the biggest stadium in the world,' Rinderknech said. 'My legs are still shaking. I'm just so happy the match is finished.' What else happened at Wimbledon on Tuesday? Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Two-time champion Petra Kvitova played her final match at the All England Club, bowing out 6-3, 6-1 against No. 10 Emma Navarro. 'This place holds the best memories I could wish for,' said the 35-year-old Kvitova, who will retire after the U.S. Open. 'I never dreamed of winning a Wimbledon and I won it twice.' Defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova and men's No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz both needed comebacks to win, and No. 1 Jannik Sinner was never troubled in a straight-set victory. Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff were in action later. Who is scheduled to play at the All England Club on Wednesday? No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka starts the Centre Court program against Marie Bouzkova at 1:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. ET), followed by two-time defending men's champion Carlos Alcaraz against 733rd-ranked University of San Diego player Oliver Tarvet of Britain, and then 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova vs. 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu. ___ AP tennis:

Atletico Madrid signs young Italian left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid signed Italian left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta on Tuesday. The 22-year-old defender will arrive on a five-year contract, Atletico said. Financial details of the transfer were not immediately disclosed. Ruggeri came through Atalanta's youth system and made his first-team debut as an 18-year-old in a Champions League match against Liverpool in 2020. Atletico said Ruggeri is a left back 'with good crossing ability and great stamina.' He spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Salernitana and returned to Atalanta the following season to establish himself as an important piece for coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Ruggeri was included in UEFA's Europa League Team of the Season in 2023-24. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. He was an international at all youth levels for Italy and was called up to the senior squad in March for the Nations League quarterfinal against Germany. Atletico has already parted ways with three defensive players from last season's squad: Reinildo, Axel Witsel and Cesar Azpilicueta. Diego Simeone's team was eliminated in the group stage of the Club World Cup that is being played in the United States. It finished third in the Spanish league, behind Real Madrid and champion Barcelona. ___ AP soccer:

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova bids farewell to ‘the best tournament'

LONDON (AP) — Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova waved goodbye to her favorite Grand Slam tournament Tuesday. The 35-year-old Czech player, who won at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, plans to leave the tour after the U.S. Open, which ends in September. Her Wimbledon farewell was a 6-3, 6-1 loss to 10th-seeded Emma Navarro of the United States on No. 1 Court. 'This place holds the best memories I could wish for,' an emotional Kvitova said in an on-court interview that is usually granted to the match winner. 'I never dreamed of winning a Wimbledon and I won it twice. This is something very special. 'I will miss Wimbledon for sure,' she continued. 'I will miss tennis, I will miss you fans. But I'm ready for the next chapter in life as well, and I can't wait to be back as a member.' Kvitova, who accepted a wild-card invitation, missed last year's tournament while on maternity leave. The 24-year-old Navarro said Kvitova has been 'an incredible player and obviously won this tournament twice, and then had a kid and came back, which is definitely an inspiring story from her end.' In 2011, Kvitova beat Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Three years later, Kvitova earned her second trophy, defeating Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 in the title match. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'I think it's the best tournament in the world,' she said. The U.S. Open, she assures, will be her last one. 'I am sure,' Kvitova said, noting it's not just the toll on her body. 'The motivation, it's different than it was before.' ___ More AP tennis:
