Two Dead, 19 Injured as Mexican Navy Ship Crashes into Brooklyn Bridge
A tragic maritime accident unfolded Saturday when a tall Mexican Navy training ship, Cuauhtémoc, crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two crew members and injuring 19 others, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred as the ship, carrying 277 personnel, lost power while navigating New York's East River. According to New York police, the vessel's captain was maneuvering the ship when it veered toward the bridge's Brooklyn abutment after experiencing mechanical failure.
Shocking footage captured the towering masts of the Cuauhtémoc clipping the bridge structure. Authorities said several crew members were stationed on the masts at the time, which collapsed and crashed onto the deck, leading to multiple casualties.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and panic. "There was lots of screaming, some sailors hanging from the masts," said Brooklyn resident Nick Corso, speaking to AFP. Another witness, Kelvin Flores, told the BBC that he saw emergency crews struggle to reach the site due to heavy traffic, adding, "Just seeing the actual damage was insane."
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed on social media platform X that two people had died, with two of the 19 injured reported to be in critical condition. Despite the impact, city officials said the Brooklyn Bridge sustained no major structural damage and was reopened following a preliminary inspection.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that all three of the ship's masts were lost in the collision. Fortunately, all personnel were accounted for and no one fell overboard during the incident. Crowds gathered along the waterfront reportedly fled in fear as the ship struck the bridge.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences, saying she was "deeply saddened" by the loss of two crew members. The Cuauhtémoc was eventually towed away from the scene.
The vessel, a 297-foot-long (91-meter) and 40-foot-wide (12-meter) barque, was commissioned in 1982 and is used for training naval cadets. It had departed from Acapulco on April 6, bound for Iceland as part of its annual international training voyage. Officials stated the ship's mast height was approximately 158 feet (48.2 meters), exceeding the Brooklyn Bridge's 135-foot clearance at its center.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities citing a mechanical failure and subsequent power loss as the likely causes of the collision.

Extreme weather misinformation ‘putting lives at risk,' study warns
AFP | Washington Major social media platforms are enabling and profiting from misinformation around extreme weather events, endangering lives and impeding emergency response efforts, a research group said yesterday. The report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) -- which analyzed 100 viral posts on each of three leading platforms during recent natural disasters including deadly Texas floods -- highlights how their algorithms amplify conspiracy theorists while sidelining life-saving information. 'The influence of high-profile conspiracy theorists during climate disasters is drowning out emergency response efforts,' the report said, adding that the trend was 'putting lives at risk.' Nearly all of the analyzed posts on Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram lacked factchecks or Community Notes, a crowd-sourced verification system increasingly being adopted as an alternative to professional fact-checkers, the report said. Elon Musk-owned X lacked fact-checks or Community Notes on 99% of the posts, while Google-owned YouTube 'failed entirely,' with zero factchecks or Community Notes, CCDH said. The report noted that wellknown conspiracy theorist Alex Jones's false claims during the LA wildfires amassed more views on X throughout January than the combined reach of major emergency response agencies and news outlets, including the Los Angeles Times. 'The rapid spread of climate conspiracies online isn't accidental. It's baked into a business model that profits from outrage and division,' said Imran Ahmed, CCDH's chief executive. During the wildfires, online scammers placed social media advertisements impersonating federal emergency aid agencies to steal victims' personal information, Ahmed said, citing local officials. 'When distraught people can't distinguish real help from online deception, platforms become complicit in the suffering of innocent people,' he said. The tech platforms did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 'Dangerous' falsehoods Following natural disasters, misinformation tends to surge across social media -- fueled by accounts from across the political spectrum –- as many platforms scale back content moderation and reduce reliance on human fact-checkers, often accused by conservative advocates of a liberal bias. During Hurricane Milton, which struck Florida last year, social media was flooded with baseless claims that the storm had been engineered by politicians using weather manipulation. Similarly, the LA wildfires were falsely blamed on socalled 'government lasers,' a conspiracy theory amplified by viral posts. Augustus Doricko, chief executive of cloud seeding company Rainmaker, said he received death threats online after conspiracy theorists blamed him for the devastating floods in Texas. The CCDH study found that the worst offenders spreading extreme weather misinformation were verified users with large followings, many of whom were attempting to monetize their posts. Eighty eight percent of misleading extreme weather posts on X came from verified accounts, CCDH said. On YouTube, 73% of such posts originated from verified users, while on Meta, the figure was 64%.

Pakistani camel relearns to walk with prosthetic leg
Cammie, a young camel whose front leg was chopped off by a landlord in Pakistan's southern province of Sindh, left her caregivers emotional as she walked for the first time on a prosthetic leg. 'I started weeping when I saw her walking with the prosthetic leg. It was a dream come true,' Sheema Khan, the manager of an animal shelter in Karachi told AFP on Saturday. Veterinarian Babar Hussain said it was the first time a large animal in Pakistan had received a prosthetic leg. Cammie's leg was allegedly severed by a landlord in June 2024 as punishment for entering his field in search of fodder. A video of the wounded camel that circulated on social media prompted swift government action. According to the deputy commissioner of Sanghar, she was transported the very next day to Karachi, over 250 kilometers (155 miles) away, and has been living in a shelter there ever since. 'She was terrified when she first arrived from Sanghar. We witnessed her heart-wrenching cries. She was afraid of men,' Khan told AFP. One of the biggest challenges the caregivers faced was gaining her trust. 'I cannot put her condition into words,' Khan added. To aid her recovery, the caregivers introduced another young camel named Callie. Her presence brought comfort to the injured Cammie, who tried standing on her three legs for the first time after seeing her new companion. 'Cammie had been confined to her enclosure for almost four to five months before Callie arrived,' Khan added. After treating the wound and completing initial rehabilitation, the shelter -- Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project -- arranged a prosthetic leg from a US-based firm so she could walk on all fours again. 'We don't force her to walk. After attaching the prosthetic leg, we wait about 15 to 20 minutes. Then she stands up on her own and walks slowly,' veterinarian Hussain told AFP. He said that it would take another 15 to 20 days for her to fully adjust to the new limb. The caregivers said Cammie will remain at the shelter permanently.
