Ivan Rakitić Announces Retirement After 20-Year Career

Morocco Worlda day ago
Former Barcelona and Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitić has officially retired from professional football at the age of 37, drawing the curtain on a two-decade career that took him from FC Basel's academy to the pinnacle of European football.
The announcement came via a video on Instagram, where Rakitić described football as 'the greatest gift of my life' and thanked every club he had represented.
The Swiss-born Croatian began his senior career at FC Basel in 2005 before moving to Schalke 04 in Germany. His breakthrough came at Sevilla, where he captained the side to the 2014 Europa League title – adding another on his return in 2023. Across both stints, he played 323 matches, scoring 53 goals and providing 63 assists.
Rakitić's prime came during his six seasons at Barcelona (2014–2020), where he made 310 appearances and won 13 trophies – including four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys, and the 2015 Champions League, where he scored the opener in the final against Juventus.
Internationally, he earned 106 caps for Croatia and was instrumental in their run to the 2018 World Cup final, scoring decisive penalties in the Round of 16 against Denmark and the quarter-final against Russia.
Short spells at Al-Shabab and his boyhood club Hajduk Split brought his career full circle. 'From Switzerland to Spain, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and home again – every step shaped me,' he said. 'Football, you gave me more than I could ever imagine. You gave me victories, defeats, lessons, and friends for life. My love for football will never fade. Thank you, football.' Bounou Open to Sevilla Return

Sevilla have re-established contact with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou over a possible return to the club in 2026. Spanish outlet ABC reports that club president José María del Nido Carrasco spoke directly with the Moroccan international during his participation at the FIFA Club World Cup with Al Hilal. Bounou, 33, is under contract with the Saudi club until summer 2026 but is said to have responded positively to Sevilla's approach. The La Liga side are working on cost-effective options in future transfer windows due to ongoing financial issues, with free agents and loan deals among their main targets. Bounou joined Sevilla in 2019 and made over 150 appearances before moving to Al Hilal in 2023.

Ziyech Linked to Turkish Club After Qatar Exit

Hakim Ziyech may be heading back to the Turkish Super League. Gençlerbirliği, one of the league's newly promoted sides, has reportedly submitted an offer to the Moroccan international. The 32-year-old winger was released by Galatasaray in January and failed to make an impact during a short stint with Qatar's Al-Duhail, where he was also dismissed within six months. Reports from Türkiye suggest Ziyech is facing tax-related complications, with his assets in the country potentially at risk. This cloud may affect his willingness to return, though Gençlerbirliği are still awaiting a response. Should the deal fall through, the Ankara-based club intends to pursue another high-profile signing. Ziyech, for his part, has made it clear: he has no interest in playing in the Arabian Gulf again. After his underwhelming spell in Qatar, the former Ajax and Chelsea playmaker is determined to revive his career in Europe – ideally with a side that offers regular football ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil next December. According to Al Mountakhab, Ziyech turned down three lucrative offers from Gulf clubs and is currently in advanced talks with Fiorentina, as reported by Tutto Calcio . Despite a career dampened by injuries and inconsistency since leaving Ajax, Ziyech is reportedly targeting a return to the Netherlands or another top European league to rediscover his form – and potentially reclaim his place with the Atlas Lions.

Luka Modrić to Join AC Milan After Club World Cup

Luka Modrić will join AC Milan following the Club World Cup campaign this summer, ending a glittering 13-year spell with Real Madrid. The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder is set to sign a one-year deal with the Rossoneri, with an option to extend. Speaking to BBC Sport in his first press conference, Massimiliano Allegri said: 'Modrić will arrive in August.' 'While Reijnders and Hernández won't be part of the team next season, Maignan and Leão seem willing to stay,' added Allegri. Milan begin their Serie A campaign against Cremonese on 23 August. The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner has claimed 28 trophies with Real Madrid since joining from Tottenham in 2012 – including six Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns. Modrić began his career at Dinamo Zagreb before rising to prominence in the Premier League with Spurs.
