NTR district set to achieve 100% CCTV coverage, first in AP to meet milestone
VIJAYAWADA: In a pioneering move towards technology-driven policing, the NTR district is all set to become the first district in Andhra Pradesh to achieve 100 percent CCTV camera coverage, with at least four cameras installed in every village.
This significant milestone comes under the leadership of NTR district commissioner of Police (CP) SV Rajashekhar Babu, an Inspector General (IG) rank officer who assumed charge on July 14 last year.
Known for his commitment to tech-based policing, CP Rajashekhar Babu introduced a series of initiatives in the last one year including AsTram (AI-based traffic management), e-Deployment (AI-based personnel deployment), Suraksha, drone surveillance and more.
'Technology and digital evidence play a crucial role in both crime prevention and detection. With the help of CCTV cameras, we have been able to solve over 80 percent of crimes and secure convictions. I am happy to announce that NTR district is now the first district in the state to achieve 100 percent CCTV coverage,' CP Rajashekhar Babu told TNIE.
NTR district comprises 305 inhabited and 16 uninhabited villages, spread across 20 mandals, four municipalities (Tiruvuru, Nandigama, Jaggayyapeta, Ibrahimpatnam) and Vijayawada municipal corporation.
Our target is 10,000 CCTV cameras in NTR: CP
Over 4,000 CCTV cameras have been installed since August last year, with an additional 2,000 matrix cameras funded by the police department and 300 facial recognition cameras placed at key junctions.
'All villages are now equipped with a minimum of four CCTV cameras. These installations not only help track movements and detect crime, but also act as a deterrent to criminal activities while instilling public confidence,' CP Rajasekhar Babu said. He said efforts are underway to integrate the entire camera network with zonal offices and the central Command Control Centre in Vijayawada for real-time monitoring.
'Our target is to install at least 10,000 CCTV cameras across the commissionerate within a year. Another 1,000 cameras will soon be set up in residential colonies and apartment complexes,' he added. Efforts are also being made to enhance security at religious places. Of the 1,371 identified places of worship in the district, only 500 currently have CCTVs.

237 foreign nationals have been deported to their countries, Tamil Nadu government tells Madras High Court
The State government has informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that from 2022 to May 25, 2025, 237 foreign nationals have been deported to their countries. In a counter affidavit, Superintendent of Police, Security Branch CID, Chennai, N. Stephen Jesubatham, on behalf of the Director-General of Police, submitted that during this period, 66 cases were registered against 188 foreign nationals who were found to be overstaying in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, 14 cases were registered against 31 African nationals for transporting drugs and 65 cases were registered against 280 foreign nationals for other offences. According to the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, there are 17,770 foreigners overstaying in Tamil Nadu since 2011 (as on May 25, 2025). Several of them, who landed in Tamil Nadu, have travelled to other States. The Tamil Nadu Police and the Bureau of Immigration are taking regular efforts to trace these foreigners. Following the Pahalgam attack, the Under Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued orders with regard to revocation of visas of Pakistani nationals. As per the order, all existing valid visas, except medical, long-term, diplomatic and officials visas, issued to Pakistani nationals stands revoked. Medical visa was valid till April 29. A total of 40 Pakistani nationals were reportedly staying in Tamil Nadu, of which 16 were granted long-term visas and 24 have applied for long-term visa extension. They are on valid stay as per the order of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Revised procedure A total of 95 Rohingyas (Myanmar nationals) were staying in the State. The Ministry has issued a revised procedure for the deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals/Rohingyas (Myanmar nationals). To restrict the movement of illegal/overstaying foreigners, one Special camp was functioning in Tiruchi. At present, 151 foreigners have been accommodated in Tiruchi Special Camp. Anticipating space constraints, the government has issued a G.O. re-notifying Cheyyar Special Camp in Tiruvannamalai district to accommodate foreign nationals till the disposal of the cases against them and deportation under the Foreigners Act. Bangladeshi nationals who stayed illegally have been arrested across the State and have been lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison. If they come out on bail, they will be lodged in special camps till their deportation. Commissioners of Police in cities and Superintendent of Police in districts who are the Foreigners Registration Officers (FRO) have been instructed to regularly locate, identify and physically verify overstaying foreigners in their jurisdiction and to regularise their stay or deport them. They were also instructed to ensure details are updated properly and defaulters are dealt with under relevant Acts/Rules. As per the directions of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, FROs in cities/districts have nominated a DSP level officer as nodal officer for Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP) to monitor foreigners. If foreigners are arrested, proposals are initiated by FROs for their deportation under the Foreigners Act. The State government will issue deportation orders after arranging travel documents to the foreigner, if required, in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The authorities were monitoring the foreigners and if they indulge in any illegal activities, appropriate action will be initiated including to deport them, it was submitted. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete directed the Central government to file its counter affidavit in three weeks and posted the matter for hearing after three weeks. The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition filed by K.K. Ramesh of Madurai who sought a direction to the authorities to take immediate action against foreign nationals who were staying in India even after the expiry of their visa.

Jammu: Search to track down 3 Jaish ultras enters third day
Security forces continued to scan Karur Nullah (rivulet) and adjoining jungles in Basantgarh area of Udhampur district to track down three Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists for the third consecutive day on Saturday, said officials. The army has also pressed into service its sniffer dogs to trace the terrorists. The cordon has been further strengthened with additional reinforcements to eliminate the remaining terrorists of the group, the officials added. Inspector General of Police Bhim Sen Tuti said the terrorists are reported to be still within the cordoned off area. He said that out of the four terrorists, one — the commander of the group — has been killed. The group had been tracked for over a year. Two terrorists affiliated with JeM from this group were eliminated in Basantgarh in September last Thursday, the four terrorists were found hiding near Karur Nullah in the Bihali high-altitude belt and were engaged by the joint search party led by the Army's Para Commandos, resulting in an encounter. Supported by overground workers (OGWs), the terrorists had been moving from one area to another using forests and natural caves to hide, officials said. Five OGWs have been arrested over the past several months in the belt for providing food and shelter to the terrorists. It is also believed that a local terrorist, who had returned from Pakistan after several years, is actively supporting the group. The search by troops led to the recovery of the body of the killed terrorist along with ammunition, explosive material, and cash, the officials said. Basantgarh lies on a traditional infiltration route used by Pakistani terrorists who enter from the International Border in Kathua and move via the higher reaches to Doda and Kishtwar districts in Jammu region and further into the Kashmir Valley. It has witnessed several encounters and terror incidents in the past. On April 25, Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh of the Army's 6 PARA was killed in an encounter with terrorists in the Basantgarh area. On April 9, an encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Jopher-Marta belt of Basantgarh in Udhampur district. On September 11 last year, two terrorists affiliated with JeM were killed in an encounter in the upper reaches of Basantgarh.A CRPF inspector was killed in another encounter with terrorists at Dudu on August 19, July 11, 2024, the Sang police post in Udhampur's Basantgarh came under attack by terrorists but was foiled by alert cops. On April 28, 2024, a village defence guard, Mohammad Sharief, was killed in an encounter with terrorists in Basantgarh.

‘Cybercriminals using Tripura as corridor, mobile networks have become more dangerous than AK series rifles': CM Manik Saha
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha Saturday directed the police to strongly tackle the menace of cybercrime, stating that cyber criminals were trying to use the state as a corridor. While inaugurating a cybercrime police station at Arundhatinagar on the outskirts of Agartala, CM Saha said, 'Cybercrime is a matter of discussion in recent times. Many people lost everything after becoming victims of cybercrime. Cybercriminals are negatively using technology.' He added that mobile networks have become more dangerous than the AK series rifles. 'We talk about the benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but it has negative effects too. The fraudsters can use AI against innocent people. People have to be more careful to keep themselves safe from fraudulent activities,' Saha further said. Reacting to the Opposition's allegation of breakdown in the law-and-order system in the state, the chief minister said, 'When they (Opposition) see that law and order is good here, then something opposite has to be said… People from elsewhere are coming to the state for jobs or business, as the law-and-order system is good here.' On tackling drugs, the chief minister said, 'If we speak about drugs, compared to last year, we could make 106 per cent more seizures. In the case of destruction, it is 132 per cent. The Opposition should back their claim with data. People are not fools. What happened during the Congress regime? What happened during the CPI(M) regime?' Addressing the same event, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag said the state has witnessed a 20 per cent reduction in crime in 2024 compared to 2023.
