His exit was confirmed by the club, which stated they had "mutually agreed" to terminate his contract.

Nistelrooy's time in charge in the East Midlands was less than inspiring as the team returned to the second tier with a whimper.
He only managed four wins in 25 Premier League games and racked up 18 defeats.
The club even lost 15 league games between December 14 and April 12, with only one win to add some cheer, which came against Tottenham on January 26.
As a result, the club finished the season in 18th place - 13 points adrift from 17th-placed Spurs.

Diogo Jota was a glorious finisher at his athletic peak - His death is a brutal reminder of life's fragility

FOR MOST OF us, professional sport is a grand choreography of pure vicariousness. It is through our athletes' exploits we can experience their range of feelings and express them just as viscerally, and so the emotional chord between supporter and sportsperson is invisible but taut and clean. It is this link which makes so shocking the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Their death is a bracing, brutal reminder of the sheer fragility of life. That footballers can die at their athletic peak reminds us that everything - everything – in our lives can be snatched away at any moment. This is a necessarily confounding thing. Jota's story is truly too heartbreaking to countenance. He is a father of three young children, and married his long-term partner only 10 days ago. His children will now grow up without their father; his parents will soon bury their only two children. Do not try to make sense of this because there is no making sense of it. Acknowledge instead the importance of celebrating life. Advertisement Jota was a terrific footballer, a penalty-box striker who made almost 50 appearances for Portugal in the era of their greatest penalty-box striker of all time. He failed to make his first breakthrough at Atletico Madrid but excelled on loan first at Porto and then at Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring 17 goals in the 44 Championship games to hoist them to the Premier League. There his performances were such that Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool identified him as the right player to further elevate his recently-crowned champions, whose performances had marked them out as arguably the greatest team in the club's rich history. Jota, in Klopp's own words, proved to be the 'perfect signing.' He shared Roberto Firmino's intelligence at linking play and creating space for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, and also had the ferocious work-rate needed to lead Klopp's intense pressing game, melding these qualities with a unerring threat in the penalty area. Though only 5ft 10in, Jota was superb in the air, and Jamie Carragher has publicly maintained that Jota was the best pure finisher at Liverpool, even moreso than Salah. He could also be relied upon to carry Liverpool in Salah's absence, scoring twice against Arsenal in the 2022 League Cup semi-finals while Salah and Mane were at the Africa Cup of Nations. Liverpool would go on to win the trophy, the first of Jota's major medals at Anfield. There followed the FA Cup a few months later, another League Cup medal last year and, of course, his first Premier League medal last season. Liverpool fans gathering at Anfield to pay their respects to Diogo Jota. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo There will forever be a poignancy now to the fact Jota, who wore the number 20 jersey, scored the very first goal of a season that delivered Liverpool's 20th league title. His final goal was the winner in an Anfield derby against Everton, and it was a signature Jota goal: taking possession near a crowded penalty area, he bashed and wriggled his way forward -his brain whirring much too quickly for the defenders in front of him – before tucking the ball away. His appetite to battle with defenders belied his height, and in truth it contributed to the injury problems which saw him play less for Liverpool than either Klopp or Arne Slot would have liked. 'Diogo gets in each game knocks like crazy,' said Klopp last year. 'If I go through the list of medical reports I got over the years since Diogo is here, he's in each and every one of them. Not as injured, just as – 'has a bruise, has a knock, has that' – after each game.' For all his obvious talents, it is this elemental bravery of Jota's that most endeared him to supporters. Amid the celebrations at Anfield with the Premier League trophy, Jota told an interviewer his next plan was to win the Nations League with Portugal, a vow on which he duly delivered. This was a belated moment of joy in the international realm for Jota, who was forced to miss the 2022 World Cup because of injury. Morocco's defensive stand in their 1-0 quarter-final win over Portugal was made much easier by Jota's absence. He leaves a great absence now. The vividness and intensity of sporting theatre puts flesh and a bright glare on Shakespeare's theory of life as a walking shadow, but he was right about the ignorance of the curtain's fall. 'It doesn't make sense,' said Cristiano Ronaldo in reaction today. Ronaldo is right. Enjoy life. Treasure life.

Andy Farrell ups the Lions ante with call for prodigal son Owen

Andy Farrell says the arrival of his son Owen will 'inject a bit of life and experience' into the British & Irish Lions squad in Australia and is backing him to sharpen the team's competitive edge. Farrell also said he had no hesitation in picking the former England captain despite the fact he has not played Test rugby for 20 months and struggled for form and fitness this year. Farrell Jr is due to fly in to join the squad on Friday as a replacement for the luckless Elliot Daly who broke a forearm in the 52-12 win against the Queensland Reds. It is a big call for a number of reasons but Farrell Sr insists it is the right one for the squad as they build towards their best-of-three Test series against the Wallabies which kicks off in just over a fortnight. Farrell Jr has not played any rugby at all in the last two months and is not a like-for-like positional swap for Daly but his father is focused on the impact he could have on a squad which is not overflowing with Lions experience. With his 112 caps for England and six Lions Test appearances, there is certainly no questioning Farrell's big game mindset as he flies in for his fourth Lions tour. Owen Farrell of the British & Irish Lions during the Castle Lager Lions Series, First Test match at the Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa. Picture date: Saturday July 24, 2021. In January last year Farrell announced he was stepping away from Test rugby to 'prioritise his and his family's mental wellbeing', but his father suggested when the squad was announced that the door could yet reopen. Sure enough, the Lions' prodigal son is now en route, his dad having lobbed a large rock into a previously tranquil touring pool. Listening to Farrell Sr, it sounded very much as if that was his deliberate intention. Far from worrying about accusations of nepotism or whether the decision implied a lack of faith in his younger English 10s Marcus Smith and Fin Smith, the management seem more concerned with upping the ante before a potentially intense series. 'We have said from minute one that the only thing we want is competition,' said Farrell Sr, stressing that Owen could yet be a contender for the Test squad. 'If he didn't have a chance then what is the point? Everybody should be competing, that is what everyone in the group would want.' Farrell Sr also cited 'the experience he brings, the support that you need for the group and how you make the room feel' among the reasons why Farrell has leapfrogged ahead of assorted other contenders including Scotland's Tom Jordan, Ireland's Jamie Osborne and England's George Ford. 'He's the right man at this moment in time for us. We see him adding to the group and injecting a bit of life and experience as far as what he can bring to the squad.' Farrell Jr, who will turn 34 in September, will be the sole player on tour who has tasted a previous Lions series victory. He is also a longtime Saracens colleague of the Lions captain Maro Itoje and assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth and his father stressed the whole management team had been consulted. 'There are other coaches in that conversation; it's not just on me. Obviously I make the final call and I'm happy to do that, but these conversations have been going on in the background the whole time about all sorts of players and that's the call we came to.' Not since Colin Cowdrey was summoned from the depths of an English winter in 1974-75 to take on Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson in an Ashes series at the age of 41, has a tour replacement arrived with more fanfare and less recent match practice. The jury of social media will also be keen to see if Farrell is picked on the bench against the ACT Brumbies on Wednesday – his father predicted he would feature 'soon enough' – almost two years on from the persistent online abuse which contributed to him stepping away from the international game. 'Look, I hope people can get past that,' said Farrell snr. 'There has been a lot of that nonsense for some time. That was in the past. We all just need to move on and embrace what the Lions is all about and what we have got coming ahead.' In the short term the priority is now this weekend's looming game against the Waratahs. Tadhg Beirne will captain the Lions for the first time with Hugo Keenan and Blair Kinghorn finally making their belated debuts. There is also a 6-2 forward bench split with Ben Earl covering the centre positions should injury strike Huw Jones or Sione Tuipulotu. LIONS (v NSW Waratahs): H Keenan (Ireland); M Hansen (Ireland), H Jones (Scotland), S Tuipulotu (Scotland), B Kinghorn (Scotland); F Smith (England), A Mitchell (England); P Schoeman (Scotland), L Cowan-Dickie (England), F Bealham (Ireland); T Beirne (Ireland, capt), J Ryan (Ireland); H Pollock (England), J van der Flier (Ireland), B Earl (England). Replacements: D Sheehan (Ireland), E Genge (England), T Furlong (Ireland), J McCarthy (Ireland), S Cummings (Scotland), J Morgan (Wales), B White (Scotland), M Smith (England). Guardian
