Kanpur node is key in UP Defence Corridor for indigenous manufacturing, says PM Modi
The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor is an initiative by the Centre and the UP government to boost defence manufacturing capacity in the country's most populous state. It has six nodes – Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot.
Modi was speaking in Kanpur during the inauguration of projects worth ₹ 47,600 crore, including thermal power plants, rail over bridges, and a sewage treatment plant.
Uttar Pradesh will lead India's journey to becoming a major defence exporter, said Modi, highlighting that indigenously manufactured weapons had played a crucial part during Operation Sindoor.
Operation Sindoor was India's retaliatory attack against terrorist targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir on 7 May following the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals.
'Operation Sindoor showcased India's indigenous defense capabilities and the strength of Make in India to the world," said PM Modi.
The prime minister said Uttar Pradesh would become a hub for defence equipment manufacturing. The production of AK-203 rifles had already started in Amethi, and defence minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a BrahMos manufacturing facility on 11 May this year.
The BrahMos missile played a significant part during Operation Sindoor, said Modi.
He inaugurated a 660 MW Panki Thermal Power Extension Project in Kanpur worth over ₹ 8,300 crore and three 660 MW units of Ghatampur Thermal Power Project worth over ₹ 9,330 crore, according to a press statement.
Among the projects inaugurated were rail over bridges over Panki Power House Railway Crossing and over Panki Dham Crossing on Panki Road at Kalyanpur Panki Mandir in Kanpur to support the Panki Thermal Power Extension Project's logistics by facilitating coal and oil transport.
PM Modi also said that two essential pillars for the state's industrial progress are self-sufficiency in the energy sector—ensuring a steady power supply—and strong infrastructure and connectivity.
The Prime Minister also reiterated India's three new principles in its fight against terrorism.
First, India will deliver a decisive response to every terrorist attack, he said, adding that the timing, method, and conditions of this response will be determined solely by the Indian armed forces.
Second, India will no longer be intimidated by nuclear threats, nor will it make decisions based on such warnings, he said.
Third, India will view both the masterminds of terrorism and the governments that shelter them in the same light. The distinction between Pakistan's state and non-state actors will no longer be accepted, he said.

In what sources described as an LeT-ISI project akin to the 26/11 Mumbai attack, ISI gave specific directions to Pakistan-based Lashkar commander Sajid Jutt to deploy only foreign terrorists operating in J&K. To ensure secrecy, no Kashmiri terrorist was taken on board. He was directed to ensure minimal local involvement on a "need-to-know" basis. The attack was led by Sulaiman, a suspected former Pakistani special forces commando who had participated in training at LeT's Muridke hub in Pakistan's Punjab before crossing the LoC into the Jammu region in 2022. Two other Pakistanis were also in the hit squad. Satellite phone analysis has revealed that Sulaiman's location on April 15 was in Tral forest, indicating he was in the vicinity of the attack site at Baisaran for almost a week before the incident. Sulaiman was also involved in the April 2023 attack on an Army truck in Poonch in which five soldiers were killed. However, he laid low for the next two years. Sources did not reveal the identities of the two other Pakistani terrorists. Although J&K Police had suspected the role of Pakistani terrorists Hashim Musa and Ali Bhai, probe has only confirmed Sulaiman's role till now. There is no corroboration of the role of local terrorist Adil Hussain Thoker as a facilitator, either. Even the two locals arrested by NIA last month - Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar, both from Pahalgam - are believed to have had a limited role, having provided the Pakistani terrorists food, shelter and other logistics in return for a few thousand rupees. They have also denied any knowledge of the terrorists' plan to hit tourists in Baisaran. There are currently about 68 foreign terrorists and three local terrorists active in the Valley.

Gadkari opens Rs 472-cr Sigandur bridge, CM and ministers boycott event
Shivamogga/Bengaluru: Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari Monday inaugurated Sigandur bridge — India's second-longest cable-stayed structure — in Shivamogga district amid a political row as chief minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues boycotted the event claiming they were invited at the last minute. The Rs 472-crore bridge, built over Sharavathi backwaters between Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli in Sagar taluk, is expected to significantly cut travel time for devotees heading to Chowdeshwari temple in Sigandur, besides reconnecting villages cut off since the construction of Linganamakki dam in the 1960s. Gadkari, in a post on X, said an official invite was sent to the CM on July 11, followed by a letter on July 12, inviting his virtual presence. The CM acknowledged receiving the invite on July 11 but said "such last-minute communication cannot be considered due consultation". Proceeding with the event despite the state's explicit objection, he said, amounted to sheer arbitrariness and defied the spirit of cooperative federalism. Hours before the event, Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bengaluru, "As a mark of protest, none of us — PWD minister, district minister, Sagar MLA or I – are attending the inauguration. I had personally called Gadkari and asked him to postpone the programme. He said he would. But now, bowing to pressure from local BJP members, they went ahead with the event. I had a prescheduled event at Indi (in Vijayapura). It was scheduled a month ago and I'll be there. " Accusing the Centre of "deliberately" trying to create a rift between Centre and state, Siddaramaiah said, "It is they (Centre) who should invite us. Who started the friction? The event, set to host around 350 athletes and 200 officials from 15 different nations, will now be held in Vietnam instead. The cancellation is learnt to have caused a financial loss ranging between Rs 12 crore to Rs 15 crore for Bhopal. In the wake of tensions between India and Pakistan and Operation Sindoor in May the Indian Rowing Federation communicated to the Asian Rowing Federation in May about their inability to organise the championship in Bhopal. Hence the venue was shifted. Speaking to TOI, MP Rowing Federation President Mahavir Bhatnagar explained the difficult decision to shift the tournament "As Pakistan's team was expected to participate. We decided against hosting the championship." He further said, "Consequently, the National Federation had to inform the Asian Federation about India's inability to organise this championship." The cancellation of this prestigious event in Bhopal left the sports community and organisers deeply disappointed. The Upper Lake venue would have welcomed Asia's finest rowing talent in October. The decision affected both sporting activities and the state's economy. "The hosting opportunity could have generated around Rs 12 crore for Bhopal and Madhya Pradesh," according to Bhatnagar.
