Baby Blacks wallop Argentina at U20 Rugby Championship

New Zealand's Baby Blacks have pummelled Argentina at the Under-20 Rugby Championship, while Australia have scored an extraordinary win over hosts South Africa.
The New Zealanders, who drew 29-all with Australia in their first match, left Argentina stranded at the bottom of the table with their 75-21 win at Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth.
The result leaves the Baby Blacks at the head of the table, with seven points, one ahead of Australia and two ahead of South Africa, with one round of matches remaining.
New Zealand ran up 47 points in the first half to Argentina's 14, with captain Mosese Bason and wing Maloni Kunawave both dotting down twice.
Argentina improved to score the only try of the third quarter, before New Zealand romped home with four tries, including a double for midfielder David Lewai.
Joshua Tengblad, Caleb Woodley, Eli Oudenryn, Tamiano Ahloo and Taniela Maisiri were the other try scorers, while Will Cole booted over eight conversions and Rico Simpson two.
Australia pulled off an amazing second half comeback to beat the Junior Springboks 29-24.
The young Australians were scoreless in the first half, lost two players to injury and conceded a yellow card before running up 29 straight points in the first half.
South Africa, who led 14-0 at halftime, fought back late in the game and gave themselves a chance with a late try, but failed to score from their final possession.
In the last matches early on Monday morning (NZT), New Zealand will play South Africa, while Australia take on Argentina.

The 20-year-old number eight, making his first Lions start, put on a lively showing in front of a big crowd at Perth Stadium, setting up one try before earning field position for another as well as picking up a yellow card in the first half. "I love the big occasions," said Pollock, who is the youngest member of the Lions squad. "What a great group and I just wanted to be here." Pollock was included in the travelling party despite playing just once for England. The Northampton Saints forward scored a pair of tries on his debut against Wales in the Six Nations in March. He was prominent from the start against the Force, and it was his line-break in the 15th minute that set up Welsh scrumhalf Tomos Williams to give the Lions a lead that Farrell's side would not relinquish. Pollock was sin-binned in the 39th minute and then put the Lions in the perfect position to score through Joe McCarthy in the 53rd minute when he chased down his own chip behind the Force defence. "It was a fun game and we all really enjoyed it," said Pollock. "It's an amazing group and environment to be part of - we're the four best nations, the best players in the northern hemisphere. "I'm honoured to be here ... this kind of campaign and this kind of group is only together for a short amount of time and we're trying to write history. "So we're just trying to get as close as we can together. "There's loads of boys fighting for positions and that's what you want." Pollock's lack of experience saw his inclusion in the squad questioned in some quarters, but Farrell is confident the Englishman will continue to improve as the tour progresses. Liti And Patolo Named NZ Team Flag Bearers
Press Release – New Zealand Olympic Committee Weightlifters David Liti and Tui-Alofa Patolo are part of a nine-strong weightlifting contingent at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games Games, with five members set to make their New Zealand Team debut. Weightlifters David Liti and Tui-Alofa Patolo have been named flag bearers for the New Zealand Team at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games starting today in Palau. The pair are part of a nine-strong weightlifting contingent at the Games, with five members set to make their New Zealand Team debut. Patolo, who will compete in the Women's +86kg category, is one of those athletes making her debut and admits the call up to carry the flag came as a surprise. 'When I got the call, I was shocked, I was not expecting it at all, it's such a huge honour and I'm so grateful,' said Patolo. 'My coach was telling me to make sure I picked up a call from an unknown number, because usually I would've just ignored it…but I'm glad I picked it up!' 'I've spoken to a few of the others making their debut and we're all excited. We're training hard to make ourselves and the people we're representing proud, our families, our coaches, our clubs and of course our country,' she said. Patolo is joined by experienced weightlifter, David Liti, who has been New Zealand Team flag bearer previously at both the 2019 and 2023 Pacific Games. 'Honestly as an athlete it's probably one of the biggest highlights,' Liti said. 'It's like being the captain of the 1st XV or the Prime Minister of New Zealand…you're the team leader at these events. I'm super proud and super pumped – it's one of the best feelings,' he said. Liti, who will compete in the Men's +110kg category, said his motivation to compete in the black singlet has never been stronger. 'We come from a country where competing against each other is the norm, I've adapted to that, and I just want to be the best. Until I get what I want from weightlifting, I'll still be motivated,' he said. Liti admitted it feels a bit 'weird' being seen as a senior member of the team, despite his young years. 'I feel like a veteran – I'm 28 at the moment but feel like I'm 50!' 'I still feel like just another athlete in the team. I'm always happy to share my knowledge and be there for those just starting out. I hope when we get to Palau, they can trust me and I'm there if they need my help,' he said. Patolo is likely to be one of those athletes seeking out Liti's experience at the Games and expects it will be an emotional and exciting time when she leads the team out at the opening ceremony. 'I feel like every time I even start to think about it, I'll start crying. I'm just grateful for the opportunity and to do it alongside someone like David is special as well.' The Palau 2025 Pacific Mini Games go from June 29 to July 9 with New Zealand Team athletes competing from July 2.
