Alan Titchmarsh's expletive one-word response to 'terrifying' Royal experience
Veteran broadcaster and beloved gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh has shared the pulse-racing moment he was invited to join a high-speed Royal military training exercise - an event that left him gasping for air, lost for words, and on the verge of swearing.
In a frank discussion on the Talk Horse podcast, Alan reminisced about being asked to present two Royal-themed TV shows, All the Queen's Horses and All the Queen's Men. During the filming, he had the opportunity to ride alongside the Household Cavalry and the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery - experiences he found both thrilling and daunting.
Alan first mounted a horse called Waterford, which the Queen's groom Terry Pendry warned was particularly challenging. "Waterford? He's got five legs," Pendry quipped, hinting at the horse's unpredictable nature.
Adding to the challenge, Alan had to ride in boots sans spurs, unlike his soldier counterparts, which he admits felt somewhat embarrassing.
However, it was his stint with the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery that really put his mettle to the test, reports Gloucestershire Live.
During a practice session near Wormwood Scrubs, Alan was unexpectedly asked to join one of the gun carriage teams. Despite initial hesitation, he accepted the challenge.
Perched atop a horse named Mango - which he humorously suggested might reduce him to "chutney" - he assumed his role in the central pair, tasked with guiding a hefty gun carriage through intricate manoeuvres known as "the scissors," involving high-speed crisscrossing of horses and wheels.
"It started off all right," he reminisced. "We were trotting, then into a canter, and then a gallop. I'm thinking - and I'm sorry about this - but you know that word we use that begins with 'sh' and ends with 't'."
In a particularly tense moment, Titchmarsh lost his stirrups but, against the odds, remained mounted, flawlessly completing the routine. "We did the whole kit and caboodle, and I didn't come off," he remarked. "My heart must have been coming out here somewhere."
The military veterans present were taken aback by his performance. "The outriding sergeant turned to Bombardier Floyd - I'll never forget her name - and they looked at each other and said, 'We don't normally go that fast.'"
Alan's memorable day continued as he rode from Wormwood Scrubs to St John's Wood at a rising trot, forming part of an impressive six-horse procession that brought traffic to a standstill with its clinking harnesses and rumbling wheels.
"It was the biggest thrill... certainly the biggest rush of my life," he confessed. "I got to the end, and I couldn't speak. It was just the most wonderful experience."
However, the experience wasn't without its physical repercussions. "Then I had three months at the osteopath," he quipped, chuckling at the memory.
Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh is set to make a comeback on Sunday, July 20, featuring guests Selina Scott, Pixie Lott, and Tom Parker-Bowles.

Is Princess Anne the secret weapon to finally heal rift between Harry, Charles and Wills?
PRINCESS Anne has long been hailed the hardest working royal - and could now prove vital in Harry and Charles' peace talks. It is understood that the Duke of Sussex is ready to talk with his father, the King, after a recent peace summit between their senior aides. 5 5 A working royal all of her life, Anne has been tipped by royal watchers as having a role to play in the peace-building between Harry and his family. The Princess Royal is thought to have some useful advice to offer Harry on life as a "spare" in the royal family. When Harry's notorious book released a friend of the royal family reportedly said 'He really ought to talk to Princess Anne' after the novel revealed Harry's issues with his brother William. It comes as the feud between the Duke of Sussex and the few remaining working royals appears to be coming to an end. Meetings between the Sussex's team and senior aides to the king were held, sparking rumours that a potential reconciliation was on the table. Despite the hopeful signs, William's aides were snubbed from the meeting leading to speculation that the rift between the brothers may never be repaired. California-based Harry is next due to visit the UK in September for the annual WellChild events. It opens up the prospect of meeting his father for the first time in 18 months, though no indication of a meeting with his brother William has been given. The Princess Royal has been branded the "ultimate uncomplaining spare" in a comparison to her nephew Harry. Both the princess and the Duke have had to deal with being second to older brothers. King Charles braves the chill with Princess Anne as pair wrap up warm & greet well-wishers at Sandringham church service Royal watchers have theorised that a sit down with Anne, who has forged her own path as a dutiful and dedicated royal, could be beneficial for the Duke of Sussex as he makes an effort to repair things with his family. Now a source close to the royal family has told The Times that Anne could offer some words of wisdom to her nephew. The source said: "She often talked about how, as children, she was treated so differently from Charles. "She was second to him and kicked further down the line of succession as a woman, but she forged her own path. 5 5 5 "In her twenties she was bolshy and upset about a lot of things, but she came through that. "He should talk to her about her experiences. She is shrewd. She could tell him a lot about what she went through.' Anne reportedly doesn't plan to retire until her tenth decade, following in Prince Phillip's footsteps. A dutiful and hard working member of the royal family, Anne overcame an injury just last year and returned to her duties just a few weeks later. The Princess Royal, 74 at the time, was admitted to intensive care last June with head injuries and a concussion after reportedly being kicked in the head by a horse at her Gatacombe Park estate in Gloucestershire. She was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for tests and treatment before returning to her duties that July. Anne has been almost unstoppable for more than seven decades now, working nearly without pause. The Princess Royal has not offered her thoughts on the rift caused by Harry's departure from life as a working royal and the controversies that came with it. Sister to the king, she set to spend her birthday next month as she always does - sailing with her husband around Scotland for just ten days. After this brief period she will return to her work as a senior member of the royal family. Anne is reportedly notorious among her aides for resisting attempts to create downtime for her. Shying away from attempts to celebrate her in the run up to her 75th birthday Anne instead opted to celebrate more than 100 of the 400 charities she is a patron of. The Princess Royal hosted more than 100 of her charities at a Buckingham Palace reception last month as part of her birthday celebrations.

Royal whispers laid bare by lip readers - Meghan's final straw to King Charles's wedding remark
Lip readers examined the words exchanged by the Royal Family in some of their most high-profile moments in a new documentary - revealing new insights into the family's dynamics Existing inside the royal spotlight means that for the House of Windsor, millions of eyes are trained upon them at every moment they appear in public. This is particularly true at the Royal Family's most high-profile events - like royal weddings, King Charles ' Coronation, or Trooping the Colour. Whilst conducting engagements like these, the Windsors are on official duty, but they are still a family, and every so often, they are caught having a candid conversation or moment on camera. A new Channel 5 documentary featuring insight from expert lip readers has revealed some snippets of conversations the senior royals have had in public, bringing new insight into their relationships. Lip readers are something that the royals have to be wary of, so much so, that guests at Harry and Meghan's wedding back in 2018 were even warned to cover their mouths when they were speaking to one another. Prince Harry 'whispered brutal question in Eugenie's ear' at event without Meghan Meghan Markle 'pushed Harry to take advantage' over Megxit 'years before' family told "Ladies and gentlemen, please be careful what you are saying to each other because the world can lip read," photographer Alexi Lubomirski has since revealed guards told the guests, adding: "As you walk in, you see a lot of people sort of talking like don't know what you're talking about, but everyone on these cameras is watching and lip-reading." The new documentary, entitled Lip-Reading The Royals: The Secret Conversations, dropped some bombshells about the internal dynamics of the Royal Family, and included some seriously sweet moments too. Harry and Meghan bombshell When Harry and Meghan decided to quit royal life and move across the pond, it sent shockwaves throughout the UK, but Harry has since admitted that the couple's unhappiness inside the monarchy had been brewing for a long time. At a remembrance service in 2018 - only a few months after the pair's star-studded royal wedding in Windsor, the couple shared a conversation before the service began that seemed to potentially reference their desire to leave life as working royals behind. Lip reading expert Nicola Hickling decoded the conversation for the programme, as she claimed Meghan instructed Harry to 'take advantage of the situation', before she turned to look around at the sea of royals that surrounded them. "She says Harry responded to her comment by asking: 'Today?', as Meghan added: 'Do it tonight.' Then, Harry poses a question to Meghan, asking: "You do realise that this is the end?" as Meghan responds: "Yeah, I do know" before looking away again. The experts featured in the documentary put forward that this could have been a reference to the couple's desire to leave, but whilst that isn't confirmed, it's clear it was a serious conversation. Prince Harry out in the cold In the approach to King Charles and Queen Camilla's Coronation, a huge amount of interest was generated about whether or not Harry and Meghan would be there. In the end, Harry came to the historic day solo - but the lip readers captured a moment between the Duke and his cousin Princess Eugenie, with whom he is close, that indicated he wasn't particularly happy with the icy reception that had met him at the event. It came only months after the release of his bombshell memoir Spare, that saw him make accusations about his relatives, and lifted the lid on the Windsor's family dysfunction. "I've spent five hours with my dad in his office and not a friendly text from either," he said to Eugenie, with the lip reading experts claiming he said next, "Why hasn't anybody contacted me?" Eugenie responded with a quick and cautious but seemingly sympathetic smile. Charles' emotional moment After being diagnosed with cancer not long into his reign, Charles was forced to take some time away from "public-facing" engagements and limit his schedule based on how he was feeling physically. However, he was never going to miss Trooping the Colour, one of the set piece events of the Royal Family's year. In 2024, he did ride in a carriage however, as an adaptation, where he was spotted by the documentary's lip readers appearing to have an emotional moment with his wife Camilla. "Are you absolutely certain?" Camilla said to Charles, they claimed, before the monarch replied, "I'll get through today, it makes me feel emotional, I don't know why". William and Kate's sweet parenting moments A couple of adorable parenting moments were revealed in the new documentary, showing Kate and William trying to balance the formal nature of their royal duties, whilst still engaging with their children normally. In one moment, when Prince George was starting his very first day of school, William was spotted by the lip readers calmly and carefully explaining to his eldest son - who was at the time very young and visibly nervous, what was going on. The lip readers claimed that William told George that the photographers were going to take his photo because it was his first day, and as the father and son held hands and approached his new teacher, he told George they would "shake the teacher's hand" when they met her. In another seriously sweet moment, William was pointed out to have told his children "Eyes to the skies" whilst the senior royals were gathered on Buckingham Palace balcony to watch a flypast, as a gentle reminder to pay attention to what was going on, after George said to his parents, "the crowd is so loud". At the end of the RAF display, Kate said to Prince Louis, "Wow, wow, did you enjoy that?". Kate likes a man in uniform Before Kate had officially joined the Royal Family, she was still a staple presence at important moments for Prince William, after the pair fell in love as students at the University of St Andrews and had been in a long-term relationship. At his passing out parade at Sandhurst, Kate was spotted by the lip readers making a joking comment to her pals about enjoying seeing her other half in his formal military attire. "I love the uniform, it's so sexy," Kate said, the lip readers claimed, before her friends all killed themselves laughing. Harry and William's brotherly banter Whilst William and Harry are now known to have a pretty icy relationship, they once seemed inseparable to the public - and one moment picked up on in the new documentary showed just how far their dynamic has disintegrated. At their father's wedding to their stepmother Camilla in 2005, William found himself having something of a bad hair day. His locks were all over the place during the windy day, and he turned to his younger brother and said that his "hair is a right mess" according to the lip readers. Harry, seemingly noticing for the first time, replied, "Whoa" before joking around a bit at his brother's expense and using his hands to show just how big William's hair had become, to which William replied, "Don't" with a smile. Royals unimpressed with Camilla's feather headpiece At her wedding to Charles, Camilla opted for an elegant feather headpiece - but it didn't go down too well with the other royals, including Charles himself, the lip readers claimed. Camilla, after the pair had tied the knot, said to her new spouse, "Wish I hadn't had feathers," as they blew about in the wind and she struggled to control them, but Charles simply turned away, and muttered, "They look awful," the lip readers claimed. Queen Elizabeth, for her part, chimed in too, pointing out that she "did warn her not to wear feathers". William confesses how much he 'owes' late Queen In a moving moment captured in the documentary, William showed just how much respect he had for his grandmother, the late monarch. William and Kate - newly married at the time - had been asked to step into Prince Philip's shoes and join the late Queen for an event, because the late Duke of Edinburgh was unwell. The late Queen told her grandson she was "so glad" he was there and had been able to step in, to which William simply replied, "I owe you that," according to the lip-reading experts. After the sweet moment, the pair went on to joke about how Philip could be moody when he was feeling unwell, with William replying that he knew his grandfather could be "grouchy" and they all began giggling. William tells Kate he will 'always love her' William and Kate's royal wedding was watched by millions of people across the globe, but the lip readers spotted some sweet moments during the couple's carriage ride that had previously flown under the radar. "Are you happy?" Kate asked her new husband at point, they claimed, and he replied, "It's been a perfect day." "My face is hurting from smiling at everyone so much," he said later in their journey, with Kate agreeing, saying: "I'm smiling as well". Kate then said, "Tell me you love me," to William, with him sweetly replying, "I love you always". Charles and Diana marriage breakdown The lip readers compared how Diana and Charles spoke on their wedding day - to how they interacted towards the end of their marriage, and it wasn't a pretty sight by that point. "You will be fine," Charles said to Diana when they tied the knot, and she replied happily in a "sing-song" voice, "As will you!" The couple might have been all wide smiles then, but a decade or so later, it was a different story altogether, the experts noted. The pair was sent to South Korea on a royal tour by the late Queen, on what one expert called the "mini break from hell" and it seemed to the lip readers things were pretty tense between them. When sitting in a car, Charles tried to engage Diana in a chat about how "interesting" South Korea is, but the lip readers pointed out that she seemed unwilling to reply. Giving only monosyllabic, "Yep" and "Yeah" answers, and "with no cheerfulness" one of the experts noted, she also remained resolutely facing away from him during the brief chat, looking out the car window instead. William asks Harry to 'talk' It has been widely reported that William thought Harry was rushing into things with Meghan, and that he advised his younger brother to slow things down ahead of their wedding. This, in turn, didn't please Harry, given that he was so sure he had met the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Get Prince Harry updates straight to your WhatsApp! In one moment spotted by the lip readers, before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had tied the knot, William seemed to be appealing to his brother to have a talk with him. The lip-reading experts claimed that William said to Harry that he "would like to chat with you some more" as the pair left church at Christmas, tentatively adding, "Are you up for that?" to which Harry nods in reply. Whilst it can't be confirmed what William wanted to discuss with his brother, in light of their relationship beginning to unravel, this attempt to reach out stands out.

How 'This Fan Girl' are changing what it means to be a fan of women's football
Ahead of the UEFA's Women's Semi-final between England's Lionesses and Italy on July 22, community platform This Fan Girl is redefining stereotypes of women in sports This Fan Girl is the creative community "where women power football" that promises to be "there for women in the game". Celebrating the Lionesses since 2016, and redefining what it means to be a 'fangirl', the online space is growing in numbers this Euro's. With nearly 20,000 followers, here's why the creative football consultancy should be on your radar this summer. During the Lionesses ' win against Sweden on July 17, the brand embraced the rise of the 'football core' fashion trend by hosting a watch-party that celebrated female fans of sport. The event was hosted in collaboration with TKMaxx. Attending the event, what caught my attention was the sense of community and shared enthusiasm for the sport. I was struck by how fashion had become a trendy gateway to welcome more 'fangirls' in. Who are This Fan Girl? This Fan Girl is "an online platform and community for women in football" that has been running since 2016. A spokesperson told the Mirror that: "We want women to feel fully involved in the game in all the ways they want to; working, playing and spectating". Their website states that "all women should have access to football and the benefits it brings". They plan to do this by providing access to sport culture, creativity & community. For eight years, the platform has acted as a creative studio and consultancy to nearly 20,000 Instagram followers. By curating fun and bold campaigns to bring women in sport, This Fan Girl has transformed a once marginalised community of fans - by coming together. Founder Amy Drucquer states her mission to as battling the sexist representation of female football fans in the media. Their website claiming the Google ranking of "female football fan" at the time of their formation "only scratched the surface of this rapidly growing fan culture". For more stories like this subscribe to our weekly newsletter, The Weekly Gulp, for a curated roundup of trending stories, poignant interviews, and viral lifestyle picks from The Mirror's Audience U35 team delivered straight to your inbox. In the time since, This Fan Girl has made a significant stand for the progression of modern football culture. They have taken ownership of the term "fangirl" that validates women for their interest in sport by providing connection and acceptance. They are particularly focused on game-day fashion, football-core outfits, and even Lioness-themed nails. Their partnership with TK Maxx explored how fans can show up to support England's Women's team in affordable style, agreeing that the global fashion trend was an inclusive spectrum of feminine and androgynous looks. Unfortunately for women in sport, the UEFA's Women's Euros are in the midst of tackling the layered sexism and racism towards its players. In light of the racial abuse targeting player Jess Carter, The Fan Girl reposted a statement by Sarina Wiegman on Instagram. This said: "We stand with Jess and all Lioness players past and present who have suffered racism". "No one should have to endure such vile abuse, be that in football or any walk of life. Representing our country is the greatest honour. It is not right that while we are doing that some of us are treated differently simply because of the colour of our skin. "Until now, we have chosen to take the knee before matches. It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism," adding that the team "have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kick off on Tuesday". The statement concluded: "We hope the game can come together to see what more can be done," before demanding that "those behind this online poison must be held accountable".
