Former Utah QB Cam Rising announces 'medical retirement' from football
"I have been advised by two orthopedic surgeons that I will never be able to return to playing football," Rising wrote in a social media post on Wednesday in which he announced that he "will be forced to medically retire from the game I love."
Rising added that he will seek a third medical opinion and proceed with recommended surgery and rehab, but stopped short of indicating that he foresees a path to playing again.
Rising played parts of four seasons at Utah between 2020 and 2024.
He passed for 2,493 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2021 and followed that up with 3,034 and 26 TDs in a 2022 season that landed the Utes in the Rose Bowl. But a knee injury in the bowl game sidelined Rising for all of 2023.
The Ventura, California, native's return in 2024 was shortened against Baylor in the Utes' second game of the season, when he was pushed across the sideline as he released a throw and ran into a hydration table, appearing to jam his finger on a cooler.
Rising tried to come back a little more than a month later, but struggled in a loss to Arizona State in October in which he was intercepted three times. He did not play again after that.

Sixers' VJ Edgecombe pulls up to Tyrese Maxey Foundation golf tournament
Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe was among the players who stopped by to support the Tyrese Maxey Foundation at a celebrity golf tournament on Friday. Edgecombe was spotted at The Union League Golf Club for a round of 18 holes, along with Justin Edwards, Kyle Lowry and Maxey. The tournament was part of the foundation's second annual "Friends & Family Weekend" in Philadelphia. Maxey will also host a basketball camp on Saturday, helping players aged 7-12 improve as overall athletes through game skills, intensive training, on-court instruction and more. Edgecombe was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, averaging 15 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals on 34% shooting from 3-point range at Baylor. He finished in double figures 27 times, including a season-high 30 points on Jan. 22 in a win over Kansas State. The third pick debuted with the Sixers in the NBA Summer League, averaging 21.5 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and 1.5 blocks on 42.5% shooting from the field. He was limited to two appearances due to a left thumb sprain. Edgecombe has had a brief opportunity to ingratiate himself with the team and city since joining the organization. He appears to be building good chemistry with his teammates, which should enable him to have a smooth transition to the NBA next season.

Former Arizona State football coach Dan Cozzetto dies: 'Loved his players like sons'
Former Arizona State football assistant coach Dan Cozzetto has died. Cozzetto was the offensive coordinator on Arizona State's Rose Bowl team in the 1996 season. According to Football Scoop, Cozzetto died of a heart ailment. He was 70. "For those that knew Coach Cozz, they will tell you he was a charismatic person and pleasure to be around," former ASU offensive lineman Juan Roque, who played under Cozzetto, wrote on Facebook. "He had a huge, welcoming grin and a very friendly way about him that made you respect him. "For those of us who played at ASU, we were exposed to a great teacher, an intense coach and a man who loved his players like sons." "He was my teacher, my mentor, a trusted advisor and a man I feared, yes I feared letting him down," Roque wrote of Cozzetto. "He was that powerful of an influence that you played your guts out so you would not disappoint him because you felt how much he loved this sport and being part of it. Rest in Peace Coach! I love you and will always cherish the ass chewings, the talks and the hugs you gave." "He was one of the best in the profession, an incredible offensive line coach. He had a great career at Washington, Idaho, ASU, Oregon State and the 49ers. "Unbelievable coach and mentor to offensive lines. He was actually our offensive coordinator during our run with ASU. What a great, great person he was. He will be missed by so many." Nico Iamaleava's UCLA football jersey number announced
UCLA will kick off its 2025 football season Aug. 30 versus Utah. The season opener is slated for 11 p.m. EDT at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California (Fox). 2025 will mark the Bruins' first season with redshirt sophomore Nico Iamaleava at quarterback. He transferred to UCLA from Tennessee. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound signal-caller appeared in 18 games for the Vols during the 2023-24 seasons. He completed 241-of-379 passing attempts for 2,930 yards, 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. Iamaleava also recorded 435 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 129 attempts at Tennessee. He entered the NCAA transfer portal April 12 and committed to UCLA on April 20. Iamaleava did not attend Tennessee's final spring practice and Orange & White Game before transferring from the Vols. He wore jersey No. 8 at Tennessee. No. 8 is retired by UCLA, honoring former Bruins' quarterback Troy Aikman. Iamaleava is listed to wear No. 9 on UCLA's official 2025 roster.
