Miami Dolphins Top 10 players countdown: No. 2 Zach Sieler is 'heartbeat of our defense'

Yahoo5 days ago
Editor's Note: This is part of a Countdown to Training Camp: Dolphins 2025 series. We'll unveil two players in the Dolphins' top 10 in each of the coming weeks.
MIAMI GARDENS — When the Miami Dolphins claimed defensive tackle Zach Sieler from the Baltimore Ravens on December 5, 2019, nobody had any idea they had made one of the best waiver claims in franchise history.
"He is the heartbeat of our defense," Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said of Sieler, after he was named 2024 team MVP in a vote of media. "He holds down the middle and obviously just shows up week-in and week-out and affects the game in a positive manner."
Sieler has 20 sacks in each of the past two seasons. He's done it with heralded Christian Wilkins by his side and he's done it with aging unicorn Calais Campbell by his side.
Sieler, 29, is powerful and quick and relentless. His motor has always been non-stop.
"He continues to find ways to elevate his game which is why he's such an important part of what we do from a football team perspective and in particular, defensively," coach Mike McDaniel said, when Sieler was named MVP. "Some of the stuff that he does allows you to play different coverages. That's a pretty impactful player when your ability to do your job as an interior defensive lineman can give a defensive play caller freedom on non-pass exclusive downs to play all sorts of different things."
Sieler was once a seventh-round pick from Ferris State.
And now he's a key captain of the Dolphins. It's truly a remarkable story.
Why Zach Sieler is 2nd-best Miami Dolphins player
Sieler has played with some big names on the Dolphins defense.
He's played with Wilkins, Campbell, Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, Xavien Howard, Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland. And yet he has always been as good as anyone on the field for Miami.
Almost always overshadowed. Almost always a force.
Sieler is a quiet leader. But he leads by example in every right way possible.
"He's a captain in more ways than one," McDaniel said. "He's a captain in how you conduct yourself. You want an example of how to flourish in the National Football League, how to go about the daily process, how to invest in your own game, he is a prime example."
Telling Stat
No Miami Dolphins defensive tackle has ever had more than 10 sacks in a season.
Zach Sieler has had 10 - twice.
How we see Zach Sieler's Dolphins future
Sieler has made $26.8 million in his career, according to Spotrac.
Sieler has two years left on a deal that pays $10.25 million per season, a very good bargain for Miami.
Sieler is a player who should end his career as a Dolphin. It would be a shame if money, at some point, gets in the way of that.
Either way, Sieler has been one of the most underrated defensive players in the NFL for years.
And the Dolphins are extremely fortunate to have him.

Luis Gil lined up to make season debut Sunday for Yankees after latest Triple-A rehab outing

NEW YORK — Luis Gil is expected to make his season debut for the New York Yankees on Sunday at Miami after missing four months with a lat strain. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gil threw 50 of 75 pitches for strikes, allowing one run and three hits in his fourth minor league rehabilitation start. Injured in spring training, the right-hander is lined up to return this weekend against the Marlins after pitching 14 1/3 innings in the minors. 'I think that's the plan right now,' manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 on Tuesday night. Gil began facing hitters on June 21, when he threw 20 pitches of live batting practice at Yankee Stadium, and made his first rehab start July 13 for Double-A Somerset. 'I think for the most part, get through it hopefully successfully, and strike-throwing and carrying his stuff throughout the outing,' Boone said. 'You want to see those things, but we're also mindful of it that in a lot of ways it's spring training for him and building up. 'So there's definitely that next level of competitive juices and adrenaline that'll be flowing once he gets back up here.' Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3. He was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks after receiving the original diagnosis, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest. On April 16 , the Yankees said Gil's throwing program would be delayed for about 10 days. The 27-year-old Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a 2018 trade, Gil made a successful return from Tommy John surgery and threw eight more innings in a pair of postseason starts as the Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009. ___ AP MLB:

Anthony Richardson: I'm working as if I am the Day One starter

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson says he's preparing himself as if he'll be under center when the season opens against the Dolphins on September 7. Richardson is competing with Daniel Jones for the starting job in Indianapolis, and Richardson said he has lofty goals for himself and his team. 'I've just got to work as if I am going to be the Day One starter,' Richardson said. 'Regardless of what decision they make, I'm still working, trying to improve. They're going to make the best decision for this team, and that's what we need. This team wants to win the Super Bowl. It's not about me, it's about the team. I'm just working as if I am the starter, and if I don't get the job, you know, glory to God.' For his part, Jones said he's trying not to look any further than the next practice. 'All of our jobs as players is to come out, work and improve every day,' Jones said. 'You're human, you think about where you are and how it's going, but I've got to do the best I can to focus on what's in front of me.' Richardson and Jones were both highly drafted quarterbacks who so far have not lived up to expectations. The Colts need one of them to step up and play like a franchise quarterback.
