Amid 'rift' with Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh's Army officers' ‘no reason…' statement to the media
Bangladesh Army's senior officials made the statements at a press conference in Dhaka on Monday. Addressing the reporters, director of the Military Operations Directorate (MOD) Brig Gen Md Nazim-ud-Daula said, "This is our country. Its welfare and sovereignty are deeply connected to all of us. If we want to keep this country safe, we have to do it ourselves. And if anything goes wrong, we are equally responsible for that too,' reported Bangladesh's local newspaper The Daily Star.

While responding to a question about a humanitarian corridor to Myanmar's Rakhine State proposed by the United Nations, he urged the media not to misinterpret the ongoing discussions regarding the relationship between the country's government and military
"I don't believe this issue has reached a point to warrant such criticism or speculation. The government and the Bangladesh Army are working in close coordination and complementing each other. We follow the government's directives. There is no reason to interpret it otherwise," The Daily Star quoted Md Nazim-ud-Daula as saying.
"Sometimes, even in families, there can be misunderstandings. Similarly, different stakeholders may express varying opinions in the course of running a country. But that does not mean there's division or conflict. Nothing of that sort has happened," he added.
Md Nazim-ud-Daula also made it explicitly clear that the army and interim government of Bangladesh are 'not at odds'. 'We are working together, and I firmly believe we will continue to do so even more effectively in the days ahead,' he said.
The remarks come amid reports of a rift emerging between the Bangladesh military and its interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus after the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The country's army is pushing Muhammad Yunus to hold elections by the end of 2025, according to people familiar with the matter.
Among the key issues causing differences Bangladesh's interim government and the military is reportedly the former's inability to fix a timeline for the elections and a controversial proposal to establish a corridor from Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh to Myanmar's Rakhine state in order to help Rohingya refugees, said people familiar with the matter on condition of anonymity, as reported by Hindustan Times earlier.
Calling the corridor issue 'sensitive', Col Md Shafiqul Islam, colonel staff of the MOD said, 'Let me be clear—Bangladesh Army will never be involved in any action that may compromise national security'
He also reacted to rumours about the country's army taking over the power of the state and said that they have no such intentions. ' We have no intention, no interest, and no information to suggest anything of that sort,' the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

'It is also endangering the safety and dignity of Delhi's daughters and women. Their actions seem more focused on political appeasement and show their total disregard for the Constitution of India and are devoid of even an iota of care towards the true citizens of our great country,' Manjinder Sirsa said. 'It is also important to highlight that Arvind Kejriwal himself had earlier facilitated these illegal settlements by providing them with jhuggis and promising Rs 10,000 per month assistance. Fencing India-Myanmar border a huge challenge: Assam Rifles Director General
The security and stability in India's northeast states are key to the country's territorial integrity as they are bordered by countries like Bangladesh, China and Myanmar, which makes them geographically vulnerable. This is where the Assam Rifles play a huge part and see to it that India's northeast borders remain secure and unviolated. Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, Director General of Assam Rifles, shed light on the force's role and its significance in maintaining peace in the strategically important region and spoke about a range of topics, including Manipur violence, India-Myanmar border fencing and the challenges of guarding the northeastern states. The influx of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar into India has been an issue of grave concern for the government and has become a political flashpoint between the Centre and opposition parties. It is thus important to fence and keep the India-Myanmar border secure from infiltration and that is a huge challenge, says Lieutenant General Lakhera. "The India-Myanmar border poses significant challenges, with dense forests and challenging terrain making it difficult to patrol. Assam Rifles personnel work tirelessly to secure the border, conducting day and night patrols," he said in an exclusive conversation with India Today TV. "Fencing work is also underway, aimed at preventing infiltration and smuggling. The force is working to address concerns raised by local communities and organisations, ensuring that the fencing is seen as a measure to enhance security, not divide people," the Assam Rifles DG asserted. The northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram border Myanmar. On the question of maintaining peace in Manipur, which has witnessed ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and the Meitei communities for the last two years, Lt. General Lakhera said that the force is committed to preventing further escalation in the state, adding that the government is engaged in dialogue with both sides. "The situation in Manipur has shown significant improvement, with violence having subsided. The government is engaged in dialogue with both sides, and the Assam Rifles is working to prevent any further escalation. The force is also focused on building bridges between different communities and promoting social cohesion," he added. Over 250 people were killed and thousands were displaced in the ethnic violence that bled Manipur during the violence that began in May 2023. The state is currently under President's Rule. Lt. General Lakhera further said that the Assam Rifles has been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability in the region, working closely with state governments to promote development and security. "The force has also been actively involved in initiatives aimed at promoting education and welfare in the region. For instance, Assam Rifles has been providing residential coaching to students from remote villages for NEET and JEE examinations, in collaboration with non-government organisations," he said. To date, over 500 students have been selected for these prestigious exams. "As the sentinel of Northeast India, Assam Rifles remains committed to its mission, protecting the country and its people from threats both within and beyond its borders," the Assam Rifles DG concluded. Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Seva Medal, took charge as the Director General of Assam Rifles on August 1 last year.
