MPs ask Nandy to intervene over Palace demotion
A group of Liberal Democrat MPs have asked the culture secretary Lisa Nandy to intervene over Uefa's "disgraceful" decision to demote Crystal Palace from the Europa League for breaching its multi-club ownership rules. The seven politicians from London - including party leader Sir Ed Davey - wrote to express "deep concern" over what they called "a highly unusual and severe punishment on the club that raises serious questions about fairness and transparency in the governance of English football". The Eagles, who qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup - their first major trophy - in May, were demoted to the lower tier Conference League on Friday. The rules of European football's governing body state that clubs owned, to a certain threshold of influence, by the same person or entity cannot compete in the same European competition. American businessman John Textor owns a stake in Palace and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Uefa's rules set a deadline of 1 March 2025 to show proof of multi-club ownership restructuring - a deadline which Palace missed. In a letter seen by BBC Sport, the group of Lib Dems described the saga as "heart-breaking for fans". "Other clubs seem to go through much more protracted disputes with less severe outcomes," they said. "Many believe that this process has been opaque and disproportionately punitive [and] risks undermining not only the club's achievement but also public confidence in the fairness of football governance." Palace Euro demotion 'biggest injustice in history of football' Why are Forest set to take Palace's place in Europa League? Palace fans protest over Conference League demotion Nandy was urged to ensure "the decision-making process is reviewed for transparency and fairness" and that "the club is given a fair opportunity to appeal or respond to any allegations". Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, are set to replace Palace in the Europa League. On Tuesday, Palace supporters staged a protest against Uefa's decision with hundreds marching to Selhurst Park carrying banners and chanting against European football's governing body. Meanwhile, Palace chairman Steve Parish has confirmed the club will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) over Uefa's decision. "We are still fighting," Parish told the The Rest is Football podcast. "There's an appeal process, so we go to Cas, and we're very hopeful. We think we've got great legal arguments. "We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know unequivocally that John didn't have decisive influence over the club. "We know we proved that beyond all reasonable doubt because it's a fact." Textor is currently in the process of selling his stake in Crystal Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. DC United names Swiss coach René Weiler to replace Lesesne
Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. United has picked René Weiler to be its new coach. The team announced Wednesday that Weiler will take over once he receives a U.S. work permit. The 51-year-old Weiler, a native of Switzerland, served recently as coach and sporting director at Servette FC in the Swiss Super League. United is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase,' Weiler said. 'The foundation on site gives me confidence in what we can build. There's still a lot of work ahead, but I'm fully committed to leading this club back to where it belongs, competing at the highest level in MLS.' Euro 2025: Girelli's two goals lift Italy over Hegerberg's Norway into semifinals
GENEVA (AP) — On a night of goals and drama for two veteran star strikers, Cristiani Girelli got the better of Ada Hegerberg to send Italy into the semifinals of the Women's European Championship on Wednesday. Girelli's 90th-minute header, her second goal of the game, sealed a 2-1 win over Norway, whose captain Hegerberg had tied the game after missing a penalty. Italy will return to Geneva next Tuesday to face either Sweden or England for its first Women's Euros semifinal since 1997. The 35-year-old Girelli had seized the lead for Italy in the 50th by deftly guiding in a shot fired across the Norway goal by Sofia Cantore. With extra time looming, Girelli met Cantore's perfectly weighted cross with a graceful leap at the far post to direct her header just under the crossbar. Hegerberg leveled the score in the 66th with her first scoring chance just six minutes after missing a penalty kick for the second time at Euro 2025. Hegerberg ran clear to a long pass and poked a shot past onrushing goalkeeper Laura Giuliani. The slow-rolling ball just beat the Italian defenders in a race to the goal line. Girelli's Geneva Girelli now has 61 goals for Italy and the last three all went into the same net at the mountains end of the Stade de Genève stadium. She also scored one of the goals of the tournament, curling in a 22-meter yard shot against Portugal that shaped to be decisive in the group stage until Italy conceded an 89th-minute equalizer. It was Italy that finished strong in the first knockout round and no one more than Girelli. Hegerberg on the spot The Norway star has taken two penalty kicks at Euro 2025 and missed both, placing her two shots wide of each post. She also scored in each of those games. Hegerberg won this spot-kick by falling under a grappling challenge from Italy captain Elena Linari trying to meet a high cross. Replays suggested Hegerberg might have been offside. Taking a short and slow run to the ball, Hegerberg sent her shot wide of the left hand post of Guiliani, who guessed correctly which way to dive. The former Ballon d'Or winner also missed when Norway led 2-1 over Switzerland, shooting to the right of Livia Peng's dive, in an opening day win by that score. ___ AP soccer:
