A group of Liberal Democrat MPs have asked the culture secretary Lisa Nandy to intervene over Uefa's "disgraceful" decision to demote Crystal Palace from the Europa League for breaching its multi-club ownership rules. "Many believe that this process has been opaque and disproportionately punitive [and] risks undermining not only the club's achievement but also public confidence in the fairness of football governance." "We are still fighting," Parish told the The Rest is Football podcast. "There's an appeal process, so we go to Cas, and we're very hopeful. We think we've got great legal arguments. "We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know unequivocally that John didn't have decisive influence over the club. DC United names Swiss coach René Weiler to replace Lesesne
Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. United has picked René Weiler to be its new coach. The team announced Wednesday that Weiler will take over once he receives a U.S. work permit. The 51-year-old Weiler, a native of Switzerland, served recently as coach and sporting director at Servette FC in the Swiss Super League. He's also won the Belgian Pro League title and reached the Europa League quarterfinals with Anderlecht and guided Al Ahly to a Premier League championship in Egypt. "D.C. United is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase,' Weiler said. 'The foundation on site gives me confidence in what we can build. There's still a lot of work ahead, but I'm fully committed to leading this club back to where it belongs, competing at the highest level in MLS.' Euro 2025: Girelli's two goals lift Italy over Hegerberg's Norway into semifinals
GENEVA (AP) — On a night of goals and drama for two veteran star strikers, Cristiani Girelli got the better of Ada Hegerberg to send Italy into the semifinals of the Women's European Championship on Wednesday. Girelli's 90th-minute header, her second goal of the game, sealed a 2-1 win over Norway, whose captain Hegerberg had tied the game after missing a penalty. Italy will return to Geneva next Tuesday to face either Sweden or England for its first Women's Euros semifinal since 1997. The 35-year-old Girelli had seized the lead for Italy in the 50th by deftly guiding in a shot fired across the Norway goal by Sofia Cantore. With extra time looming, Girelli met Cantore's perfectly weighted cross with a graceful leap at the far post to direct her header just under the crossbar. Taking a short and slow run to the ball, Hegerberg sent her shot wide of the left hand post of Guiliani, who guessed correctly which way to dive.
