The African Union - Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) Spotlights Camelids as Pillars of Climate Resilience at Regional Forum
The Regional Forum on the International Year of Camelids and Sustainable Livestock Transformation in Africa, co-organized by the FAO and AU-IBAR, aims to promote sustainable livestock systems and the role of dromedary camels in improving food security, resilience, and economic development throughout Africa. The meeting provides an opportunity to explore policy frameworks, highlight successful initiatives, encourage investment, and advance the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation. An accompanying exhibition commemorates the International Year of Camels, highlighting innovations and traditional knowledge from camel-keeping communities.
The inaugural ceremony, conducted by FAO Assistant Director-General Abebe Haile-Gabriel, emphasised the importance of modernising livestock systems to meet Africa's growing population demands. AU Commissioner Moses Vilakati was represented by AU-IBAR Director Dr. Huyam Salih, who presented measures to improve sustainability, equity, and resilience in continental livestock systems. She further noted that: 'The vital role camelids and sustainable livestock systems play in achieving food security, improved livelihoods and resilience across Africa.' Dr. Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Livestock Development in Kenya, highlighted the vital role camels play in climate adaptation and economic development across arid regions.
In giving a presentation on AU-IBAR's strategic plan and efforts, she noted "AU-IBAR helps Member States modernize policies to increase productivity, enhance animal health and connect value chains through projects such as the Livestock Development Strategy for Africa (LiDeSA). Our aims are to share findings and bring stakeholders and through coordinated efforts, we work towards bringing sustainable and resilient value chains.'
Throughout the day, AU-IBAR will host discussions about national investments, policy alignment, and camel development, emphasising their commitment to integrating camel resilience methods in dry regions. Discussions on livelihoods, nutrition, and food security, conducted by AU-IBAR's Mary Mbole-Kariuki, will focus on the nutritional benefits of camel milk and AU-IBAR's activities to improve household income and food security.
As the forum progresses, AU-IBAR is expected to be involved in discussions about One Health, natural resource governance, and investment policies. Their contributions will shape future policy conversations on food system reform, impacting global summits such as the Africa Climate Summit and COP30.
The forum will last until June 12, 2025, with the results intended to inform regional and worldwide plans for sustainable agricultural and resilient food systems.

The Compendium is part of ECOSOCC's commitment to strengthening the African Union's connection with its people and is aligned with the AU's 2025 Theme of the Year, 'Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.' The 'My Africa My Future Compendium' (MAMF) was conceived 25th May 2025, as part of the Africa Day commemoration. The Compendium represents ECOSOCC's commitment to make civil society visible, valued, and heard. This initiative creates a space for civil society to tell its own stories, share its solutions, and shape continental and global policy conversations from the grassroots. As a digital and physical repository of civic excellence, My Africa, My Future will catalogue a wide range of impactful CSO-led initiatives, encourage interregional learning, and build a legacy of civil society action that will inform Africa's development for years to come. 'With 'My Africa, My Future,' we are not only documenting action, but we are also acknowledging and elevating the indispensable role of civil society in shaping Africa's future,' said William Carew, ECOSOCC's Head of Secretariat. 'This Compendium is a platform for recognition, and above all, for solidarity. It's time the world hears the collective voice of African civil society on justice and reparations—clear, united, and unstoppable.' The initiative invites CSOs from across Africa and the global African diaspora to submit their work, with a focus on projects that champion justice and reparative action. Selected contributions will be featured in the inaugural edition of the Compendium and serve as inspiration for replication, scaling, and policy alignment. "West Africa has the potential to sustainably transform its food systems," says Ms. Bintia Stephen-Tchicaya, Acting Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Subregional Coordinator for West Africa
The 2025 Regional Report on Food and Nutrition Security in the Sahel and West Africa, reveals that nearly 52 million people in the region are affected by food insecurity. In an interview with the African Press Agency (APA news), Ms. Bintia Stephen-Tchicaya, Acting Subregional Coordinator of the FAO Office for West Africa said that despite the alarming figures reported, "the region has all it takes to sustainably transform its food systems," said. Recently appointed to head the office overseeing 15 West African country programs, she focuses on innovation, resilience, and inclusion to address the structural and cyclical challenges facing West African agriculture. During the interview, Ms. Tchicaya presented the priorities of her mandate. She outlined her vision and ambition for the subregion to "build more inclusive, sustainable, competitive, and nutrition-sensitive food systems, based on the "Four Betters" strategy promoted by the FAO: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life." She also emphasized that despite the combined effects of conflict, climate change, and economic volatility, viable solutions can be found. These include participatory approaches such as Farmer Field Schools (FFS), support for nutrition-sensitive agricultural policies, and the implementation of green hubs as part of the Great Green Wall initiative. "In Senegal, for example, we contributed to updating the agro-sylvo-pastoral orientation law, which now includes the fisheries sector, food systems and the climate change dimension," she explained. "On the operational front, FAO has developed participatory approaches such as Farmer Field Schools and Dimitra clubs, which after years of implementation, have proven effective in driving behavior change and strong community engagement. These approaches are now being scaled up by the government and civil society organizations', she said, adding 'On the environmental front, the FAO supports the Senegalese government in implementing the Reforestation Agency and the Great Green Wall program, a bold initiative aiming to establish seventy resilient green hubs across arid and semi-arid areas between 2023 and 2032.' Faced with the decline in traditional funding, Ms. Stephen-Tchicaya calls for increased and diversified resource mobilization, focusing on: "Public-Private Partnerships, a multi-donor approach, climate and green financing, strengthened engagement with non-traditional donors (emerging countries, philanthropic foundations, regional financial institutions), increased inter-agency cooperation, community and civil society involvement, as well as South-South and triangular cooperation." Ms. Stephen-Tchicaya also emphasized FAO's strategic role in strengthening early warning systems, supporting agricultural governance, and using digital technologies and artificial intelligence to increase productivity, improve livestock traceability, and combat livestock theft, a phenomenon that is on the rise in the region. "FAO actively contributes to surveillance and early warning, particularly in the area of food security, through its participation in the regional system for the prevention and management of food crises (PREGEC), coordinated by the CILSS. FAO also has tools such as the Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS), which enables precise monitoring of the agricultural season and provides harvest forecasts. FAO will continue this support while investing more in disaster risk prevention and reduction, particularly through anticipatory actions implemented before crises worsen. FAO's true added value in the region lies in this connection between early warning and rapid response.' Furthermore, Ms. Tchicaya emphasized the importance of digital solutions for securing pastoral livelihoods: "We are convinced that the digitalization of the livestock sector constitutes an innovative and essential solution to protect pastoralists in the face of this unprecedented phenomenon in West Africa," she argued. In her closing remarks, Ms. Tchicaya issued a strong call for collective mobilization. "We must act together—governments, technical and financial partners, the private sector, and civil society—to build resilient and sustainable food systems that meet the aspirations of West African populations," she pleaded. Oman: 2nd Taqah Agricultural Forum to promote food security and rural development
TAQAH: The Wilayat of Taqah in Dhofar Governorate hosted the second edition of the Agricultural Forum on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, bringing together farmers, agricultural experts, government officials, and private sector partners to promote sustainable agriculture and support national food security efforts. The two-day forum, organised by the Office of the Wali of Taqah in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, aims to strengthen local farming practices, improve productivity, and expand rural economic opportunities. In his opening remarks, the Wali of Taqah affirmed that hosting the forum reflects the region's commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture as a cornerstone of food security and economic resilience. The Office of the Wali described the event as a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and practical solutions to agricultural challenges, particularly in light of climate change and economic transitions. The Wali's Office also praised the collaborative efforts of farmers, government institutions, and private stakeholders, calling for sustained coordination and strategic planning to develop productive projects that enhance rural livelihoods and ensure national food security. Experts participating in the forum highlighted Dhofar's unique environmental advantage—its annual monsoon season, known locally as Khareef. The seasonal rains, which transform the Dhofar landscape from June to September, offer a valuable opportunity to revive traditional farming cycles and expand crop production. 'Historically, families in the Dhofar highlands have relied on Khareef as the beginning of their agricultural year,' said one agricultural expert. 'It provided rain-fed soil conditions ideal for growing crops and supporting livestock. Revitalising this seasonal pattern using modern techniques could enhance food security in a climate-resilient way.' One local farmer from the rural highlands of Dhofar spoke about the untapped potential of mountain agriculture. 'The highlands are fertile and suitable for cultivation, but they require effort and sustained support,' he said. 'Agricultural knowledge plays a major role in improving yields. We hope the government will allocate more land in mountainous areas to help farmers expand cultivation and increase productivity.' Throughout the day, attendees took part in technical sessions and working papers covering a range of topics, including pest control strategies, genetic improvements in livestock, and methods to enhance the value of local agricultural products. Other presentations explored how home-based farms and rural entrepreneurs can contribute to economic diversification and social development. The forum also included an agricultural exhibition showcasing local produce, agri-tech solutions, and services from public and private entities. Participating organisations included the Ministry of Agriculture, Dhofar Municipality, the SME Development Authority, and private agricultural suppliers. Farmers displayed a wide variety of high-quality products such as organic fruits and vegetables, natural honey, dairy goods, and livestock. Experts praised these goods for their quality and potential competitiveness in both domestic and regional markets. Participants agreed that Oman's agricultural sector is gaining momentum, supported by targeted policies, local innovations, and strategic investment. Stakeholders stressed the need for modern farming technologies, access to finance, and increased awareness of climate-smart agriculture. By linking local knowledge with advanced practices, events like this forum help position agriculture not only as a source of food but as a key pillar of economic diversification, rural employment, and national resilience.
